Product Description
826 Seattle is pleased to present their third anthology, What To Read In The Rain. Within the pages of this handy companion, you will find essays, super short stories, a few longer stories, recipes, advice, and other information, all written by adults and children.

These pieces of writing have three important things in common:

* They are in some way connected to the Pacific Northwest.
* They are written by fans of 826 Seattle, a youth writing center located in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle.
* They are all a good read.

If you were to read this entire book you would, as a result, know more about the following things:

* Farming on Bainbridge Island
* Being Jewish in Seattle
* Making baklava.

You may wonder things such as the following:

* Is the hundred boxes story fact or fiction?
* Why did it take Ryan Boudinot so long to find Doris Burn?
* How could anyone miss Florida after a minute in the Pacific Northwest?

And you will be glad for things like the following:

* Recipes from famous people.
* Superlative writing advice from a Northwest icon.
* Some comprehensive numbers comparing Spokane with Seattle, which will be surprisingly useful at cocktail parties and on other occasions.

All in all, you ll be extremely glad you encountered this book.

Features stories, recipes, and essays from 826 Seattle students, and Tom Robbins, Megan Kelso, John Moe, Jess Walter, David Guterson, Ryan Boudinot, Paul Hughes, Charles R. Cross, Bharti Kirchner, Teri Hein, Michael Chabon, Katheen Alcala, Tom Douglas, Myla Goldberg, Po Bronson, Lyall Bush, Eli Sanders, and Lauren Weedman. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great showcase of 826's power
I just couldn't pass up buying this book, not just because its proceeds benefit 826 Seattle, an organization that provides much needed writing enrichment for children, all free of charge (which in and of itself is becoming amazingly rare, these days).

"What to Read in the Rain" is an eclectic collection of stories that encapsulate what it's like to live, love, or visit Seattle, all from very different, extremely distinct prospectives. Better yet, were it not for the fact that each story features a blurb informing you about its author, the remarkable thing about this collection is that if you didn't know it from those very brief blurbs, it might be hard to distinguish the pieces that were contributed by adult authors from those of the young writers featured in the collection, for the most part. The latter pieces exhibit maturity and creativity that belies the writers' age and experience, and what better testament to the fact that 826's core mission of teaching a new generation to love and produce writing is not just being met, but its goal exceeded!

Some of the authors in this collection might be "yet not famous", but it's likely just a matter of time for that to change. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Marcoux Does it Again
Just when this country needs more words of encouragement as well as hands-on practical advice, Tom delivered "Nothing Can Stop You This Year."

It's the kind of attitude that makesTom great and what makes this country great.

The best part about this book, and Tom's other books, is that it provides hand-on, practical advice. Two of the key points I like are Tom's concept of creating breakthroughs and building your castle first. Tom sets up the foundation for what comes later in the book.Each chapter builds on previous information and concepts.

Tom is a great motivator and coach.Buy his books.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Detailed Roadmap For Success
Nothing Can Stop You This Year! Is a complete roadmap, a comprehensive guide to success.

The book is fairly long at 351 pages, however it is a very friendly read.The book is designed for ease of reading, with lots of white space and a very good layout.Do not let the length keep you away from this book.

The book is very comprehensive and covers the major things that get in the way of success.Tom Marcoux gives the reader plenty of systems and strategies to achieve whatever they set their heart to.There are plenty of exercises, worksheets and questions for the reader to actually do.

The book is well organized and the actions Tom recommends are a process.Tom gives an explanation of what should be done and then a process for taking action.This is one of the real values of this book - the process.Having general knowledge about some subject is not enough.If you are going to be unstoppable, you need to take specific action.Tom generally gives a process and uses an acronym to make the process easier to remember.For example, to get physically fit, Tom recommends the GREAT process.G -Get clear about what you want, your desired goal, R- Reform your exercise program, E - empower your eating, A - Align your food and T - transform the inner you.

There are literally dozens of such processes in the book.

After each discussion, there is a principle that summarizes succinctly the point of the discussion.Then Tom provides a powerful question.Answering these powerful questions is an extremely valuable exercise.

Tom covers everything you need to work on to have your best year ever.He gives a process for leveraging your time.He gives the reader a process for easing through the barriers that have been holding you back.He goes into great detail for how to build your personal brand.Throughout the book are very thought provoking questions and exercises to help you become unstoppable.

Tom provides the tools you need.Unfortunately, you have to provide the work.He is very clear, there is no magic.He tells you what you need to do, it is up to you to do it.

There are plenty of very good quotes scattered throughout the book.

There are two other topics that I feel Tom did a rather good job on.One is discussing the difference between results goals and effort goals.Far too many people set results goals and are disappointed when they are not achieved.Tom says we need to pay more attention to effort goals.Often we have no control over the results and certainly the timing of the results.But we have total control over the effort we put into achieving any goal.Hoping for results without putting in the effort is wishful thinking.Having someone set results goals for us can be very discouraging.A sales manager may set results goals for the staff.The staff does not have total control over the actual sales volume.They do have control over the number of calls, proposals, etc. that they make.A very good distinction.

The other very notable discussion that is missing from many self-help books is the discussion of non resistance, non attachment and non judgment.So much of our emotional pain is a result of our resistance to what is, our attachment to things/ideas and our judgment of how things should be. When we learn to give up resistance, attachment and judgment our lives become much easier.Thing naturally flow our way.

A very good resource for those who truly want to have a more successful life.Tom supplies the tools, if you do the exercises, follow the processes, apply what you learn, you will be unstoppable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Achieve Your Goals Any Time!
While most people only make New Years' resolutions this book will help you achieve your goals at any time. Tom Marcoux's compilation of awesome ideas can empower you to lose weight, manage time, increase your intuition, brand yourself, improve your listening skills and achieve dozes of other valuable life skills all in one book. The author has gathered some of the best principles for goal setting and achievement that can help readers improve their lives. Pick one and get started today on the road towards a better tomorrow!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fine oyster
This next installment in this series of helpful books proves to be a huge oyster filled with pearls of wisdom ready for harvesting and use.

It is easy to string together a great necklace of fine specimens to examine, appreciate and wear [use] regularly!Pearl after pearl [or is that chapter after chapter] of well described and ordered steps to fulfill your goals and dreams.These are all stated in easy to follow guidelines and tips that will assist in reaching your goals and stop the procrastination so prevalent today.

Read it, use it, follow it!Another fine follow up to his other titles including "Be Heard & Be Trusted", "Say Yes to Yourself!" and "How to Heal When Life's Too Much!", to name a few.Nothing Can Stop You This Year!: How to Unleash Your Hidden Power to Persuade Well, Get More Done, Gain Sudden Profits, Command Intuition and Feel GreatBe Heard and Be Trusted: How You Can Use Secrets of the Greatest Communicators to Get What You Want

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Can Stop You With Tom at Your Side
What I like about this book is the technology and personal support Tom Marcoux offers you all along the way. He covers a lot of topics so you will be sure to find solutions for most anything that holds you back. Two important areas to me are getting started and procrastination. He teaches you how to Build Your Castle, which helped me clarify my dream and stay in touch with my feelings so I don't waver. There is also a section on procrastination that helped me to continue to build momentum. With Tom's practical guidance, I feel I can finally move forward without the blocks that have held me back in the past. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! May be the best kids book series!
We've got all but one of the "It's OK!" books and every time I reread one (which is often - our son loves the books!) I'm more impressed. Tom and Ally seem real because of their insecurities, and seeing them go through nerve-racking situations helps our kids prepare for the real thing in life.
The art is great as well!
I wished the team that made these books would produce some more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great if there's a new baby on the way!
My son is 2 1/2 and we are due with our second child next year. He loves to talk about the baby and read books about babies on the way. This book does a great job telling kids about changes that are occurring in mom.......why mom is so tired, why mom's tummy is getting bigger, etc. There are a lot of words in the book, so if your child can't sit still for more than 15-20 minutes to read a story, this book isn't for you. ...
