Editorial Review

Product Description
This work unites important theological-philosophical subjects discussed by Robert Grosseteste throughout his prodigious output, with those exemplified by an anonymous contemporary English writer on music. It shows how music collaborated with the other liberal arts, operating within the early university curriculum as a ministry discipline. Music made accessible through the "figurae" of its notation, and through sound, otherwise nearly unapproachable, new Aristotelian concepts. The influence was reciprocal in that new Aristotelian tools and conceptualization greatly influenced music notation and style. Music theory has been studied in isolation, as pertaining only to music. This study relates music of the early 13th century to its intellectual context, overturning dogma, uncritically accepted since the beginning of this century, concerning so-called "modal rhythm", and showing how "contrary motion", rather than forming a musical convention, demonstrated a key Aristotelian concept. ... Product Description

Once deemed the "custodian of the twilight zone" by Southern Living, celebrated storyteller and ghost hunter Nancy Roberts returns to familiar subject matter in this newly expanded edition of her Ghosts of the Wild West, a finalist for the Spur Award of the Western Writers of America in its original edition.

In these seventeen ghostly tales--including five new stories--Roberts expertly guides readers through eerie encounters and harrowing hauntings across Kansas, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and the Dakotas. Along the way her accounts intersect with the lives (and afterlives) of legendary figures such as Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Doc Holliday. Roberts also justifies the fascination among ghost hunters, folklorists, and interested tourists with notoriously haunted locales such as Deadwood, Tombstone, and Abilene through her tales of paranormal legends linked to these gunslinger towns synonymous with violence and vice in Western lore. But not all of these encounters feature frightening specters or wandering souls. Roberts also details episodes of animal spirits, protective presences, and supernatural healings.

Forever destined to be associated with adventure, romance, and risk taking, the Wild West of yore still haunts the American imagination. Roberts reminds us here that our imaginations aren't the only places where restless ghosts still roam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roberts lets the ghost stories tell themselves
Few people have visited as many reportedly haunted places or spoken to as many witnesses to unexplainable events as Nancy Roberts, and the personal, down-home manner of her writing style has made her one of the country's most celebrated purveyors of ghost-enchanted tales.Haunted Houses tells the stories of nineteen haunted houses found across the United States.Few of these stories will make your blood run cold, and Roberts eloquently expresses her belief that many spirits return for reasons far removed from any violent circumstances of their deaths or thirsts for revenge, but there is a definite level of creepiness in some of the tales recorded in this impressive little book that will have you checking the shadows in the corners from time to time.

These stories are eminently readable; several are told in the words of actual witnesses, but all are described in a conversational manner. This is not a formal study of the paranormal; it is instead a collection of the personal stories told by all manner of normal men and women describing unexplainable events they have been witness to.All nineteen of the "houses" (with the exception of the Hotel Ione which has since burned to the ground) also exist to some degree as historical landmarks, many of which are open to visitors or operate as bed and breakfast inns which still welcome guests.Roberts provides the relevant information about each location in case her readers wish to visit these places themselves.

Among the ghosts described in these pages are a murdered French soldier, a hanged Tory spy, a hostess who continues to greet guests to her establishment, lovers who still return to honor their undying affection, a well-known pirate, a heartbroken father returning to the place where his little girl died, young ladies seeking important objects of affection, and young soldiers who died too soon.Locations include old forts, governors' mansions, a sea-side resort, hotels, plantation houses, and fancy villas found all the way from Maine to California and many points in between.A number of the legends come from the South, including several from the home state of North Carolina shared by both myself and the author.

These are not ghost stories in the sense of campfire tales meant to frighten children or patently unreal stories that beg disbelief; these are the real stories of real people, many of them simply dripping with historical significance.Whether you believe or disbelieve the things you will read in this book, there is not a ghost of a chance that these nineteen tales will fail to touch you with their simple beauty and exceedingly human qualities. ... Product Description
These linked stories track the lives of four women who lead adventurous lives in the contemporary West, but must leave their cherished mountain landscape and move to middle America. They cross more than the continental divide—the title becomes a metaphor for the many transitions and "divides" of life: the transition from the promise of young adulthood to the challenges of middle age, from closeness to estrangement, from a sense of exile to discovery of new connections, from a beloved landscape to one that is alien, but somehow embraced. These stories cross the divides between the sexes, between parents and children, one’s own talents and the needs of others, the divide between art and life, and even the divide between life and death. While these stories are often about loss, they are also about hope, forgiveness, and the ability to see humor and beauty in new and astonishing dimensions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare find
Were I a better writer myself I could do justice to a review of this fine book.I am sorry it is not better known. It came to my attention through another reader. What writing!! Open to any page:"Climb one of these mountains . . . and you get to eat the world alive:the tang of fir and sagebrush, the salt of the big lake, the spun-sugar clouds spread wide by the sticky fingers of angels; take in, even, the groaning platter of the desert far to the south . . . "
Or: "He pretended at first not to know what I was talking about, made those round eyes that had gotten him everything in life."Or:"Time is not something we think about. What we measure is the angle of our bodies against the rock, the intake of breath as we commit our weight to another toehold, another curl of fingertips around the slippery edge of a crack."And ... "We are strung out on the rope across the ice-coated ridge like beads on a rosary."
The characters are, in every instance but one, unhappy people. They expect to be loved and understood forever, and they are not, so they leave - migrate, like birds - in one way or another. The at first puzzling interweaving of their stories led me to the enjoyment of making notes, who's telling what story, and so on, until I could keep track.
I recognized my own generation:the one that intended in the 60s and 70s to save the world, but discovered that saving oneself intervened.
It is modern, Hemingway-esque story-telling, since the people don't change, really, but only go deeper into themselves, seeking salvation in their art, their mountain climbing, their bird watching, their dogs and horses. There is abuse, there is illness, death, suicide, desertion. The child caught at my heart. The suicide caught at my heart. There is, in the end, a bit of hope:the neighbor, with "hair the color of Navaho sandstone."And Lily's "seventh thing".
One likes these people, these lost people. They are not, as the first reviewer said, forgotten.Weeks later, one is still thinking about them.I keep going back to the book to savor phrases, descriptions.

I hope Ms Roberts will continue to write for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars I cried on several occasions
Confession: I don't read much "pure literature," leaning more toward escapist thrillers than the worthwhile stuff. And I never read short stories. But I did read this book and am amazed that, over a year later, the characters remain with me. It's a series of short stories involving people who are in various ways related; minor characters in one story show up as principles of a later story. And what characters! I found myself aching with them, and crying with them, and longing with them. I have to tell you that I have a mind like a sieve, and on many occasions have begun reading one of my standard thrillers only to discover, as much as halfway through, that I had read it before--but I still had no idea what was going to happen. It's important to establish my bona fides as an obscenely forgetful person--for one story in Crossing the Great Divide was so moving that I recall almost every detail, and occasionally am still haunted by the feelings I experienced upon reading it. It's a simple tale of a woman whose vehicle, towing a horse trailer, breaks down on the high plains, and she is invited by a kind stranger to stay with him and his daughter at their farm. But we learn dark things about the man and his daughter, and our hearts are broken by the end of these few pages. Roberts's ability to create characters largely through dialog is incredible. After finishing the book, you want to reread it in order to more firmly establish exactly how these people's lives are entangled. The settings add to the delight in getting to know the people--there are mountains, plains, and wild areas, and the stories often include horses--not just as backdrops, but as integral "characters" in the stories because of the people's deep relationship with them. And the wild, appealing settings are very important to the success of these stories: there is a great deal of pain in these people's lives, and setting the pain in the midst of natural beauty makes it more palatable. Read this book! ... Read more

Ensuring a high rate of innovation & productivity improvement is at the core of the challenges facing the Canadian economy as we approach the next century. The sound application of well-designed government policies to maximise incentives for innovative activity while maintaining vigorous interfirm rivalry in markets is vital to meeting the challenge. Product Description
This book, aimed at precollege teachers, shows how the role of simulation modeling in investigating dynamic processes is now extending beyond research and university environments to the precollege world. The introduction of computer modeling has the potential to significantly improve the quality of secondary science and mathematics education. Enhanced by the adoption of national standards, the increasing access to information through the Internet, and the availability of powerful, user-friendly modeling software, modeling has become even more accessible and relevant to the science and mathematics classroom. This book introduces teachers and students to many different perspectives and approaches to scientific inquiry. Each of the chapters and associated software applications integrates mathematics, science, and technology in an authentic manner.
