Product Description
Christina Rossetti was the youngest of four children. Like Elizabeth Barrett Browning, she suffered the tyranny of a loving family, being restrained by the "police surveillance" of her sister Maria and the goodness of their mother. Although she and her brother Dante Gabriel were known as the "two storms", she curbed her passionate nature, and a love of life was replaced in her work initially by the bitterness of the lonely and ultimately by the conviction of the religious. Comparing her situation with that of contemporaries Emily Bronte and Emily Dickinson, this biography examines the effects of Victorian social and religious convention on the life and work of the "High Priestess of Pre-Raphaelitism". ... Product Description

This book re-conceives Christina Rossetti's poetic identity by exposing the androcentric bias inherent in the histories of the Rossetti family and of Pre-Raphaelitism, by turning new attention to the Rossetti women, and by reconstituting a female and religious community for Rossetti's writing. Drawing on extensive archival research, Mary Arseneau investigates how Rossetti's religious faith sustains her poetic practice and authorizes her cultural and aesthetic critique; the result is a re-evaluation and re-contextualization of the whole range of Rossetti's writing.

Product Description
Although the cultural and literary influence of Christina Rossetti has recently been widely acknowledged, the belatedness of this critical attention has left wide gaps in our understanding of her poetic contribution. Often focusing solely on her early work and neglecting her later volumes, many critics minimized her relevance by measuring her stature through either her early poems or her relationships with well-known Victorian literary figures. In Christina Rossetti: The Patience of Style, Constance W. Hassett argues against this diminishment by reopening Rossetti's canon, challenging both critics and readers to trade their silent appreciation of her most familiar verse for a patient and active scrutiny of her body of work, which contains some of the finest lyric poetry of the nineteenth century.

Keeping her primary focus on the poems themselves, Hassett traces Rossetti's career through her five poetry collections, Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862), The Prince's Progress and Other Poems (1866), Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book (1872), A Pageant and Other Poems (1881), and Verses (1893). In a comprehensive account of Rossetti's evolving style and genre, Hassett analyzes the strengths and failures of the poetry, its attention to the resources of rhythm and the shifts of diction, its momentum and reserve, and the rationale for its revision. The book also explores Rossetti's innovative poetry for children, her daring reconfiguration of religion and poetry in a late-life commentary on the Apocalypse, and the influences both of female precursors she admired and outgrew and of the male circle of Pre-Raphaelite poets.

For art historians of the Pre-Raphaelites, scholars of women's writing and gender studies, students of children's literature, and researchers in religious studies, not to mention readers in Victorian poetry, Christina Rossetti: The Patience of Style will serve as an indispensable and eye-opening guide. ... Product Description

Developing a perspective on Victorian culture as the breeding ground for early theories of the unconscious and the divided psyche, The Demon and the Damozel: Dynamics of Desire in the Works of Christina Rossetti and Dante Gabriel Rossetti offers a new reading of these eminent Victorian siblings’ literature and visual arts.

Suzanne M. Waldman views well-known poems and artworks such as Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market and Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s The Blessed Damozel and Venus Verticordia in new ways that expose their authors’ savvy anticipation of concepts that would come to be known as narcissism, fetishism, and the symbolic and imaginary orders, among many others. Waldman makes a strong case for the particular psychoanalytic importance of the Rossettis by looking at how the two Rossetti siblings’ own psyches were divided by conflicts between the period’s religious scruples and its taste for gothic sensationalism.

The Demon and the Damozel is a close and contextualized reading of their writings and artwork that displays, for the first time, continuity between the medieval cosmologies these Pre-Raphaelites drew upon and the psychoanalytic theories they looked ahead to—and locates the intricate patterns of proto-psychoanalytic understanding in the rich tapestry of Pre-Raphaelite aestheticism.

Product Description

Christina Rossetti is one of the best known and loved of Victorian poets, yet only recently has she emerged from comparative critical obscurity. This is partly due to a late 20th-century rediscovery of women writers and partly because of a renewed interest in Victorian culture. Although Rossetti’s poetry is readily available, her prose works have remained largely ignored. Selected Prose of Christina Rossetti is the first book to address this deficiency by making accessible reliable texts illustrative of all her prose. The editors have collected selections of Rossetti’s prose in its three modes: fiction, non-fiction, and devotional. Rossetti wrote prose all her life, beginning with fiction, and continued with moral tales, stories for children, and thoughtful articles on such literary figures as Petrarch, Dante, and Leopardi. But above all else, she wrote devotional books. She wrote six religious works, first the brief Annus Domini and lastly the massive work on the Apocalypse, The Face of the Deep, published shortly before her death. This groundbreaking anthology helps to reveal Rossetti’s deep personal faith while also illuminating nineteenth-century religious thought and spirituality.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a Poet: Rossetti and her Prose
With the recent scholarly and popular interest Christina Rossetti's poetry has inspired, P. G. Stanwood and David A. Kent's Selected Prose of Christina Rossetti could not have been published at a more opportune time.Stanwood and Kent point out that though Rossetti was a deeply religiouswoman and that bulk of her poetry was devotional and her prose religious, scholarship has, as of yet, paid little attention to any but her moresecular work. And though there have been a few recently publishedanthologies of Rossetti's work, these anthologies pay scant attention toher prose.Almost none of her prose has been published since the firsteditions of the nineteenth century, and these editions are extremelydifficult to find. Stanwood and Kent's book provides generous excerpts fromall of Rossetti's prose, both her short stories and her religious work. Theintroductions to each of the excerpts provide publication histories andsynopses of the whole works, and the endnotes and the lengthy generalintroduction provide a highly valuable background to Rossetti's life andwork. The recent attention to Rossetti's poetry, viz. "Goblin Market", hasdrawn attention to Rossetti's imaginative powers and to her literarygenius, but Selected Prose reveals a new dimension of Rossetti's mind andinterests--she was a woman of a sensitive and powerful intellect, and hergrasp and treatment of theological issues is astute and bold for a woman ofher time. Anyone seriously interested in Rossetti's work ought to read herprose. ... Read more

The eye and ear Cannot be filled with what they see and hear. Like early dew, or like the sudden breathOf wind, or like the grass that withereth, Is man, tossed to and fro by hope and fear: So little joy hath he, so little cheer, Till all things end in the long dust of death.To-day is still the same as yesterday, To-morrow also even as one of them ; And there is nothing new under the sun : Until the ancient race of Time be run, The old thorns shall grow out of the old stem, And morning shall be cold and twilight grey.A TESTIMONYI Said of laughter : it is vain.Of mirth I said : what profits it ?Therefore I found a book, and writ Therein how ease and also pain, How health and sickness, every one Is vanity beneath the sun. Man walks in a vain shadow ; he Disquieteth himself in vain. The things that were shall be again; The rivers do not fill the sea,But turn back to their secret source ;The winds too turn upon their course. Our treasures moth and rust corrupt,Or thieves break through and steal, or they Make themselves wings and fly away. One man made merry as he supped,Nor guessed how when that night grew dimHis soul would be required of him.We build our houses on the sandComely withoutside and within ;But when the winds and rains begin To beat o... ...
