Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER III.IN the studio jointly occupied by Mr. Hunt and Rossetti, the two artists began the pictures in which their new faith was to be shown to the world through their works. Mr. Hunt's picture, as is known, was the Rienzi swearing Revenge over the Body of his Brother. Rossetti's was The Girlhood of Mary Virgin. Working with them, in his own studio, was Sir John Millais, whose adhesion to their new creed the young associates had obtained. His contribution consisted of his picture from Keats' " Lorenzo and Isabella."With the exhibition, in 1849, of these three pictures, a ferment in artistic and literary circles, destined to outlast the cause to which it owed its birth, took place. The signification of the three letters, P.R.B., or Pre-Raphaelite Brother, indicative of aims such as have previously been mentioned, which the painters affixed to their names, had been revealed by Rossetti to friends,- one of whom gave it to the world. A storm of indignation was aroused among those against whose practice in art the new school was a protest. Writers were, of course, found to declaim with customary ?eal against innovation, and as has generally been thecase, especially in England, under' similar conditions, the leaders of the new heresy were regarded as offenders against most things that are sacred or of good repute. It is possible now to smile at the pother that was raised. The movement, which had in fact been anticipated by Mr. Madox Brown, was originated by young men, of whom the oldest was barely of age. Its influence, as a protest, was enduring, its tendency was beneficial, and the men, nurtured in its faith, however much they may have diverged from their first convictions, have attained the foremost places in their art. Whatever was extravagant or fantastic in view, mi... ... Read more

Product Description

Focusing on two of the most influential figures in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Morris, this book explores new ways of considering art and literature together. Elizabeth Helsinger traces the unusually close relationship between the poetry and poetics of two poet-artists and their contemporary practice of visual art and design. Her study focuses on innovations encouraged by the interaction between the arts to reassess the importance of Pre-Raphaelitism in literary as well as art history. Using the concept of “translation” from one medium to another, Helsinger develops compelling analyses of particular works and of the shared concerns of Rossetti and Morris. She connects their aesthetic and social experiments to projects undertaken by others, and she demonstrates the impact of Pre-Raphaelite strategies on later poets and poetic theorists. Lively and illuminating, this book both offers and studies the pleasures of reading and viewing attentively.

Product Description
This book examines the treatment of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his work in twentieth and twenty-first century fiction, drama, music, and film, specifically since 1950. The author uses these genres to examine how text, music, performance, and visual images work as a system of representation. In this book, the author strives to clarify the many Dante Gabriel Rossettis, using thirteen of the thirty easily identifiable roles in this system of representation which the author has identified herself-roles by which Rossetti is described and portrayed. The identified portrayals of Rossetti fall easily into five groupings: first, the Italian-English man who is a brother and a loyal friend; second, the poet who is a painter and co-founder of an art movement which afforded him the chance to be a mentor; third, the lover, seducer, husband, oppressor; fourth, the murderer; and fifth, the tortured artist and addict who was mentally ill. These are the portrayals are used throughout this work. Several have chronological boundaries and are discrete representations while others reoccur across the time period covered. Using these categories, the author examines seven works of prose fiction, a feature-length film, two television series, a stage play, and the songs and lyrics of a contemporary band. ... Read more

Product Description
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was an exotic figure on the stage of bohemian Victorian London, his life a sensational mix of romance, tragedy, rebellion, and genius. Lisa Tickner's text explores three distinct phases in Rossetti's career: the paintings produced during his affiliation with the Pre-Raphaelites, the watercolors of the 1850s, and the late oils. The inclusion of cartoons, letters, poetry, and photographs provides a well-rounded picture of this complex and original artist. ... Read more

Product Description
Few artists have been subjected to more myth-making and misconceptions than Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). Tales about his role as a founder of the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and about his romantic involvements have often overshadowed his achievements as a painter in oils and watercolours. The aim of this study is to restore the artist to his rightful place as one of Victorian England's most engaging painters. It describes his life and work and attempts to re-establish Rossetti as a major force in British art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous but confusing ISBN/ASIN numbers
This Book is the Same Book as the one listed as "not yet released."My copy has the following ISBN:0-89659-928-0 and it is the same large-format Abbeville / Cross River Press 1989 First Edition that seems to match this review.Amazon would not let me access the product page for the matching ISBN because they said it was not yet released.

This is an unbelievably gorgeous book. I hope the "new" 2009 version is not some cheap-o foreign reprint.I bought this book as a treat for myself at Christmas one year, and most of the time it has sat on the shelf with the rest of my art books.

Like many people, I love the way DGR portrayed women, their hair especially, but also the draped clothing, and the colors, and the eyes. This book is full of illustrations, some familiar, many not, as well as a very accessible text about his life and influences. There are also sketches.I didn't read it all because I'm not an art student, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find what I did read to be so, well, readable!I was thinking to sell my copy, but perhaps I will keep it and hope to read more of the text.

It would be neat to find a book like this that showcased the work of half a dozen such romantic artists.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Comprehensive
This is a 200+ page oversize (11 x 13) book with dozens of full length color illustrations covering Rossetti's long career. Faxon organizes his works chronologically and provides lots of text covering the period, Rossetti's style, and the meaning inherent in many of his works. There are ample sketches and closeups. For a Rossetti fan, this book is a real treat. ... Read more

Product Description
On November 11, 1878, Rossetti wrote to Watts-Dunton: `Friday night exactly made a year since my return to London in 1877 & you know how well I have been the whole of that time.' Indeed, in 1878-79, Rossetti lived what might appear to be a more tranquil version of his first years at Cheyne Walk. The long breach with Ford Madox Brown finally ended, and he began to see his brother regularly again; and he managed to complete a number of commissions, and other paintings. However, as the correspondence collected here show, his depression was seldom far away; he was often unable to work. His repeated letters to Watts-Dunton and Shields, asking them to come over, reveal his need for companionship, preferably in his own home, that was a constant of his character. There are also a number of letters to Jane Morris. ... Read more
