Limited but good
The only problem with this 'reader' is that it excerpts works up until 1981. In the past twenty- five years Roth has written many new works central to his oeuvre such as 'American Pastoral' and 'The Plot Against America'. Therefore the Reader needs a serious updating if it is to be truly representative of this wonderfully prolific and talented writer's work. ... Read more

As well as setting the novelist’s work in the context of Jewish-American writing (and Jewish-American families) and twentieth-century American politics, the book explores the characteristic paradoxes in Roth: self-disgust and self-consciousness, restraint and letting go, nausea and appetite, energy and frustration, stylishness and vulgarity, surrealism and the mundane.

Roth is a highly literary and referential character and an assessment is made of the conflicting influnces on his work of Kafka, Checkov, Gogol, Henry James, Melville and Henry Youngman, a Jewish nightclub and Vaudeville comic. In addition a close examination of his anxious, revolting, garrulous heroes, their mothers, their marriages, their shrinks, and their shiksas is undertaken and a deep seriousness is discovered, co-existing with Roth’s comic brashness and bravura.

This book comprehensively surveys Philip Roth's published and unpublished works, focusing on the thematic unity which binds them together: the memory of the Holocaust and the altered universe born of that memory.The Holocaust is understood as the orienting event for Roth's fiction and non-fiction, the force that surrounds the characters and the narratives at all times.Roth's obsession with questions of the Holocaust, questions of responsibility, meaning, and powerlessness, explains his recurring discussion of entrapment, dehumanization, nihilism, guilt, and coercion.
The concentrationary universe of the title is defined, in this work, as not only the universe of camps, but also the universe that exists after the devastation. Moral and philosophical norms are revoked in this new world. Roth's early works are presented on a desolate landscape.The introduction explicates this landscape, specifically by invoking an early play of Roth's, a play which is set in a Jewish ghetto during the Holocaust.This unpublished work introduces the historical period that shapes the visions of Roth's future protagonists.
The next three chapters study Roth's relentless excavation of the dilemmas of fathers, mothers, authority figures, and the inner discord of need and purpose.These seemingly quotidian problems are exacerbated and intensified by the Holocaust's shadowy presence. No relationship, no effort at fulfillment, no action is untempered by history in Roth's varied fictions.
Chapters four and five look directly at Roth's allusions to the Holocaust.They explore, through each of Roth's works, how the Holocaust-thematic -the play of ideology and nihilism-and the Holocaust-pattern -the idea of the past encroaching upon the present -work through Roth's career, informing his readers not only of his fascination with the Holocaust, but of his particularly human way of dealing with it.
The last chapter briefly summarizes the findings of the previous chapter and connects Roth's specific concentrationary universe to the larger world. insightful yet appealling
This book is a marvel of an analysis on the works of the great Philip Roth.It is extremely well-written, with beautiful diction and prose.Yet that isn't all:his analysis of Roth's works are very original, and Dr. Milowitz's book has enriched every reading of Roth I have done since I first purchased the book two years ago.In addition, it is written in a way that's appealling both to the literary critic as well as to the general public.Bravo!!

Dr. Milowitz is an awsome english teacher! Hes a genious. I know this from experience as a student of his in high school. This book is a must read for anyone intrested in Philip Roth's works.

A truly wonderful book
Steven Milowitz gives an in-depth analyses of the mind of one the greatest American authors ever. The book literally drew me in, I read it in one sitting. An informative and very well written book, I reccomend it to everyone.

Shows just how dumbed down American news media has become
Here is another compendium of news stories that were under-reported (or un-reported) by the mainstream news media.

Did you know that over 20,000 private companies are working with the FBI to collect and provide information on other Americans? According to a prestigious British polling group, the civilian death toll in Iraq since the 2003 invasion has topped the 1 million mark. The US Treasury Department now has the authority to seize the assets of anyone who is perceived to, directly or indirectly, threaten US operations in the Middle East (which could mean almost anyone). The American Psychological Association has been complicit in CIA torture. The No Child Left Behind Act has become a huge bonanza in the world of corporate profiteering.

At least nine billion dollars in cash have been unaccounted for since the early days of the Iraq occupation. Today, there are 27 million slaves in the world, more than at any other time in world history. They are not just in the Third World, but also in the developed world. Elliot Spitzer was not removed from office because of "personal indiscretions." He was target of a Wall Street and White House operation to silence an increasingly vocal critic of their handling of what became the present financial crisis.

It seems that there just was not enough air time or newspaper space for these stories, but there was abundant space for Lindsay Lohan, Brad and Angelina, Jessica Simpson, Alec Baldwin and David Hasselhoff. This book also explores the media coverage of the Military Commissions Act, healthcare and the 2008 campaign, American media bias against the lawfully elected Hamas Government in Gaza, the marketing of Gardasil as a "cure" for cancer, when it really isn't, Winter Soldier and the Pentagon's targeting of young people (including children).

This is an excellent book that shows just how "dumbed down" American news media has become. It is eye-opening reading and is highly recommended.

Excellent source not found elsewhere
This is a series I have read up to now for many reasons. Unlike the prev reviewer, there isn't any room for conspiracy theory here. Every single statement that is reported on is from a cited main stream source, not an out of the view isolated paper or website. Secondly, just take a look at the contributors, in the 2007 edition, all contributing writers (about 80+) are PhD,s and one is a masters degree holder. Many of the writers are nobel and other distinguished prize winners.

It is a view into what will be in a few years. The things that this book (series) reports on is what msm will cry about in 18 months when its hits our own cities. Pay attention!! ... Read more
