Product Description

The Country Waif (Françoise le Champi) is the second of the three pastoral novels which rank along with George Sand's autobiographical writing as her finest work. Although simple in themselves, these tales have behind them much of the complex experience of her extraordinary life. As Mrs. Zimmerman writes in the introduction, they reflect Sand's "youthful romanticism, her later championing of the working classes, and her desire to record in fiction that was both poetic and factual the lives of the people and the region she knew best."

Set in the countryside of the author's native province of Berry, The Country Waif tells the story of François, an orphan boy placed in a rural foster home, and Madeline, the miller's wife who befriends him. Sand's contemporary, Turgenev, wrote that it was "in her best manner, simple, true, affecting." The book has been admired by writers as diverse as Willa Cather (she found it "supremely beautiful") and André Malraux, who considered it a masterpiece.

As well as examining the setting, language, and narrative mode of the novel, the introduction looks at Sand's life, in part from the feminist perspective, with attention to the sociopolitical background of the post-Napoleonic era, when Aurore Dudevant felt impelled to rebel against her status as a country wife and to become George Sand.

Product Description
Acclaimed literary biographer Benita Eisler sheds new light on the many roles, triumphs, and losses that together constituted George Sand's overwhelming presence. The first woman in Europe to become a best-selling novelist, Sand was the author of nearly ninety novels, twenty thousand letters, and thousands of pages of autobiographical writings and political commentary. Her fame is inseparable from her notoriety. There was the scandal of leaving her husband and children, setting up in Paris with an eighteen-year-old lover, as well as her many liaisons and friendships with men of talent and even genius: de Musset, Chopin, Balzac, and Flaubert. As Eisler reveals, hers seems like several lives--literary, political, amorous, and domestic. Naked in the Marketplace captures Sand's essence--the outsized public persona and the inner woman, along with the unique and irreplaceable role she played in the history of her times. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars the worst
I haven't bothered to write an Amazon review for I don't know how many years, but this book really offended me by being so bad. Here goes. This supposed biography reads like a plodding summary of a much larger--and real--biography. Everything from Sand's life is told through prose that reminds one of the kind found in Barron's Book Notes: simplistic, shallow, monotonous, yawn-inducing, the kind that takes the "lit" out of "literature" and turns your reading into sheer torture. There's not only no in-depth analysis of either Sand the woman or the writer, there are nearly no quotes from Sand herself, and absolutely no excerpts from any of her writings. Except for the endless plot summaries of a few novels (not even the key ones) that serve absolutely no purpose, you could hardly tell that this is meant to be the biography of a WRITER. A pure abomination.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not light fare, but well worth it
This is the first George Sand book I have read. I was curious about her after watching the movie "Impromptu". It was a bit of a quest to get my hands on one of her books--possibly this would not have been my first choice. Either way, I found it very interesting.

It is hard to grasp the revolutionary nature of some of the ideas she has in this book--i.e. equality of women from a modern view point. Of course much of what she is saying and observing is still quite relevant in many ways. And she has a marvelous way of saying what she does. It makes me wish I could read French well enough to read it in the original.

It was a great example of first person narrative, and Horace certainly is a character unlike any other I have encountered in a book. Eugenie is a marvelous woman as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of George Sand's best books...
This is a truly fantastic book. It is written in George Sand's fourth period of creativity and emphasizes on what it means to be a man. G. Sand stresses on the qualities of human nature, but she does not criticize themon the surface. She shows what would happen if people accept them.

It isworth reading for anyone who feels they do not know what they want to dowith their lives! ... Read more

Product Description
Sandian heroines swirl around men in their sororal and sartorial disguises like moths around candle flames. However, as Disguise in George Sand s Novels illustrates, the disguise is not an instrument to seduce men but rather to assert the heroines' true selves. The portrayal of female and androgynous protagonists in Rose et Blanche (1831), Indiana (1832), Lélia (1833/39), Gabriel (1839), Consuelo (1842), and La Comtesse de Rudolstadt (1844) is a metaphor to demonstrate the continuity of identities before and after the disguise as George Sand stipulates in her theory of the ménechme. Disguise in George Sand's Novels explores the maturation process of Romantic and artistically inclined heroines and highlights the spiritual meaning of the disguise as a rite of passage for the birth of a new type of protagonist: spiritual, self-assertive, and dedicated to erasing gender inequality and helping the poor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For sensitively intellectual romantics.
I am a history major and came across this woman while studying French modern history and she so intrigued me that I read her biography, which is absolutely fascinating and truly engaging. I read this book about 3 years ago but George Sand has stayed with me, though she has been dead for centuries her fiery nature has been reincarnated in her biography. If you like strong women who are true feminists without bothering with the crusade or the label this is the book/woman for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Storyline ....
This is a biography of a woman writer who's real name was Aurore Dupin, who lived in Paris in the 19th century -- Since Amazon didn't provide an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "Hailed in her lifetime as the first female genius of any country or age -- even while condemned as the pipe-smoking, pants-wearing mistress of Frederic Chopin, Alfred de Musset, and numerous others -- George Sand, born Aurore Dupin, both captivated and scandalized nineteenth-century Paris. Foreshadowing the women's movement by more than a century, she shook the foundations of European literature and culture with her consuming desire to discover her identity through her art. A provacative, daring and truly gifted writer, George Sand emerges as large as life in this splendidly realized, lusty biography -- an insightful narrative as romantic, as intense, as meomentous as the life that inspired it." ... Product Description
Maria Jameson is having an affair—a passionate, lifechanging affair. She asks: Is it possible to love two men at once? Must this new romance mean an end to love with her husband?

For answers, she reaches across the centuries to George Sand, the maverick French novelist who took many lovers. Immersing herself in the life of this revolutionary woman, Maria struggles with the choices women make and wonders if women in the nineteenth century might have been more free, in some ways, than their twenty-first-century counterparts.

Here, Rosalind Brackenbury creates a beautiful portrait of the ways in which women are connected across history. Two narratives delicately intertwine—following George through her affair with Frederic Chopin, following Maria through her affair with an Irish professor—and bring us a novel that explores the personal and the historical, the demands of self and the mysteries of the heart. Sharply insightful, Becoming George Sand asks how we make our lives feel vibrant while still acknowledging the gifts of our pasts, and challenges our understanding of love in all its forms—sparkling and new, mature, rekindled, and renewed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings
I had mixed feelings about this book. I really disliked almost every character, especially the heroine, who comes across as a dazed, self-absorbed twit, albeit one who's supposed to be highly gifted. Also, I couldn't fathom how the author could draw a parallel between this character and the 19th-century French author George Sand. I still don't get it.

Indeed, Sand is the only "character" in this book who I found believeable and likeable. The others were pretty two-dimensional.

The writing is nice, with great descriptions of Edinburgh and other places. But I found it a slog overall. ... Read more
