5-0 out of 5 stars Reason is the slave of the passions
I read this book for a graduate seminar on ethics.Hume's Treatise of Human Nature along with his staunch empirical approach to epistemology, has garnered him recognition as a "great skeptic" of the rationalist tradition in philosophy and recognition as the greatest philosopher to write in English.Hume's ethical project is concerned with discovering how people's nature dictates moral behavior and in discovering the moral virtues that society deems useful.Hume separates himself from the classical Greek notion of how an agent acts virtuously when he posits his thesis that people are incapable of using reason to sway their emotions or substantially influence their wills."I shall endeavour to prove first, that reason alone can never be a motive to any action of the will; and secondly, that it can never oppose passion in the direction of the will."((T, 2.3.3).Hume's theory regarding the process that agents use to act is a departure from the classical Greek model in that it relies on passion and is devoid of the idea of using practical reasoning to overcome feelings of fear to accomplish a noble end.For Hume, only a person's passions can choose their ends, and he denies that reason has the ability to evaluate their ends.(T, 3.1.1).Hume's notions on reason vastly contradicts the vast majority of ancient and modern philosophers' beliefs, regarding the amalgamation of human emotion and reason producing the practical reasoning to guide an agent to act.

Hume's anti-rationalist assertion that reason cannot be the major factor producing moral action provides the foundation for his entire ethical theory. In essence, Hume uses a causality argument to explain virtues and vices and what motivates people to make moral choices.Hume argues that what moves people are sentiments of pleasure, such as, pride or love, or pain, such as humility or hatred, as they either observe actions by others or contemplate performing acts of their own."In every case, therefore, we must judge of the one by the other; and may pronounce any quality of the mind virtuous, which causes love or pride; and any one vicious, which causes hatred or humility."(T, 3. 3. 1).Hume adopts a subjective view to morality. He argues that one cannot use reason or science to deduce "truths" in ethics.Actions are deemed virtuous by a particular society through judgments of approval or distaste of people's sentiments when observing or contemplating a particular action. With this ethical model, Hume posits the notion that there are only two types of virtues, "natural" and "artificial," and that courage is a natural virtue since it brings the pleasurable sentiment of praise and pride to the one who acts courageously.

Hume leaves very little if any room for reason to either direct the people will, or even work in conjunction with people passions or emotions to form any kind of practical reasoning a person can rely on to guide them on a path to ethical behavior.

Maggie Evans is paying a visit to the place she swore she would never return to - Collinwood. 4-0 out of 5 stars DS is Back and Better Than Ever!!!
Where "The House of Despair" leaves, "The Book of Temptation" begins. All the characters are back, plus one spirit.

Scott Handcock is at the helm of this new story, and even though being a new fan, manages to grasp the characters rather well. I think Mr. Manning had a better handle on the characters, but Handcock does not fail in any way shape or form. "The Book of Temptation" is a fast-hitting story, filled with many plot points and important occurances. The Widows Wail creates an eerie backdrop of sound, just as those menacing vultures did in the previous story.

Maggie is center stage here, and is once again made the victim. This, unfortunately, is what made Victoria Winters so boring in the original series. Her constant non-understanding of the situations in which she was victimized became tiring. Let us hope that Maggie Evans, filled with so much spunk at the beginning of the series (You're a jerk! J-E-R-K!) does not meet this same fate.

Angelique, Quentin, and a "new" Barnabas Collins, cousin from England extraordinaire, race against time to save Maggie before she becomes one of the dearly departed trapped in the book she's found.

Handcock's story is tighter than Manning's in the previous volume, and moves along quickly. Where Manning is the master of suspense, Handcock is the master of quick hitting action, or as much as can be expected for an audio drama. Somehow, despite all the previous, I found "The Book of Temptation" to be somewhat less satisfying than "The House of Despair". This is probably due in large part to the fact that I love suspense and intrigue, and a good mixing of those qualities as well as action is something hard to achieve for any writer.

The Dark Shadows Audio Series is off to a most promising start, and I can't wait to hear more. Let us hope that "The Christmas Preseance" and "The Rage Beneath" live up to their predecessors!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Book of Temptation" is Seductive and Addictive"
"The Book of Temptation", the second Dark Shadows audio play, seamlessly picks up where "House of Despair" left off. Maggie is ensnared by a book that attempts to possess her soul. It's up to Quentin, Angelique, and a "friend" to help her escape its seductive clutches.

Scott Handcock, the author of the script, is a newcomer to Dark Shadows. You'd never know it from this play. His story is steeped in the Collinsport legends of the wailing widows and evokes memories of the early days of Dark Shadows.

The story is tight and tense. There aren't any scenes that are expendable. The pace is fast, but never moves at the expense of character development. David Selby (Quentin), Lara Parker (Angelique), and Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie) don't miss a beat in their perfomanances. One would think the series had been prodcuded immeidately following the demise of the original show. Newcomer, Daphne Ashbrook is alternately chilling and sympathetic. Doctor Who fans may remember her from the '90s TV movie with McGann and some of the Big Finish productions.

This latest chapter is accessable to fans new and old, but I'd recommend listening to "House of Despair" first. I'm eagerly anticipating "The Christmas Presence".

Product Description
Environmental education has reached an interesting crossroads. There has neverbefore been such media attention on hard-to-grasp issues such as climate change, nor has there ever been such scientific understanding and agreement about the varied aspects of the environmental crisis, the loss of biodiversity, and the health effects of human-made toxins and pollutants. In addition, there has never been so much high quality research within environmental education, with new journals flourishing in Canada, Australia, and South Africa to give just a few examples. Yet, despite all this knowledge and attention, there has not been a significant shift in the way the economy operates, the way governments govern or the way people live. Consumption of resources continues to increase and these patterns continue to be closely correlated with levels of waste, pollution, environmental ill health, and social injustice. This book showcases the work and thinking of environmental educators who areconcerned about the residual mechanism within their field, the guiding symbol ofthe web of life in all its dynamism notwithstanding. The notion of web recognizes interaction between all elements in a system but falls short of recognizing the flow of the whole through the system and its parts. The notion of dance is used here to convey this fundamental, yet oft overlooked, dimension to wholeness. ... Read more

They provide ideal listening for your home, in your car, or even at the gym. Prize-winning author Joyce Carol Oates turns her satiric eye to Tobias Harte, a man obsessed with perfection in everything from ethics to egg salad. Rollicking comedy ensues as Harte struggles with his highly imperfect family and friends. 4-0 out of 5 stars Meet the Kidders.
How hard it is to lose a child. There is no hyperbole in such a statement, and there is no need to assume. To read Horton Foote's The Young Man From Atlanta is to read multiple stories at once. By this notion, the lives and fortunes of the Kidder's, Will and Lily Dale are doubly shaken. Not only has their child died, but the work that Will dedicated himself to has left him behind, the friends he thought he had, the trust he knew with his wife, their world itself has been fractured. All along too is the underlying story, the sensation that resonates through the play, the ominouos, the untold, the mystery. The inability to know a son who moved away, and spent money but had nothing, who went for a swim not knowing how to swim, and knew a young man-a roommate-who shows up in the Kidder's world to grieve or to swindle. The mystery of a kindly step-father who may in his past have transgressed with younger women, of the world's whimsy at pressing it's grotesqueness upon you...
This is a deceptive play. Especially in reading, it can seem to be a straight forward, dull and obvious story. That is Foote's brilliance. These characters are not sophisticated, or conniving, or analytical to the point of paralysis or explosion. They are clear in their lives, and basic in their needs. And they are older, habits are strong, constitutions hardy. So when the dubiousness of the outside, the growing South, the mystery of their one child's death, the onslaught of a business world that is not loyal or honorable to the past impedes, that constitution fractures.
Foote is one of the Great American writers. Great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sincere Joy to Read
Horton Foote is everything that today's culture is not -- thoughtful, sensitive, insightful. His works are rich, but can be accessed only by taking the time to listen and reflect, skills not well practiced these days (as evidenced by the dimwitted reviewer of the previous entry). If you cannot see his plays, please read them slowly and carefully (Both 'The Young Man from Atlanta' and 'The Last of the Thortons' are excellent choices) and the rewards will be tremendous.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Horrible Book. Not At all deserving a Pulitzer Prize.
The Book had a good Plot. The way the characters where represented where horrible. You should have gotten to know them better, the author should have spent more time on the description of the characters personalities, and details of the story then just concentrating on the plot. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Please note:This is *not* the book
Not a review as much as simply a warning. If you're looking for "The Caine Mutiny" audiobook, this is *not* it.This is the unabridged play...with actors reading their parts. If this is what you're looking for, then jump right in.If you're looking for an auiobook of the actual 560 page text...this is not it.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT BOGIE AND FERRER....BUT IT'S GOOD
To do it justice it was excellent! But if you've already seen Humphrey Bogart and Jose' Ferrer in the Cain Mutiny movie then you've already seen the best that can be done. This audio book has some more and some different information but it's really close. The actors did fine jobs but better than Bogart and Ferrer, no. I enjoyed it as a comparison read and if you can suspend your memory, don't criticize and just absorb, you will enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars I found the book to be an excellent depiction of the war.
The Caine Mutiny was an excellent novel. It gave a great insite on a sailor's life during the war. I found it to go into great discription at times. THis was often confusing and boring. Besides these detailed parts Ifound it to be intriguing. ... Read more
