Product Description
"Common knowledge has it that Ronald is primarily a historical figure whose contribution to Canadian art lies in the formation of the free-thinking Painters Eleven in the 1950s. This is correct enough, but concomitant with it is the tacit assumption that his choice to downplay painting temporarily for a career in broadcasting implies that his later years were substantially a matter of showmanship and/or charlatanism...[Ronald is] one of the more genuinely fascinating characters in Canadian culture, one to whom we are indebted for much more than a spirit of internationalism running counter to what was thought of in the 1950s as the choke-hold of the Group of Seven." - taken from the Introduction. ... Product Description

The first documented meeting between Mark Twain and William James took place while both vacationed with their families in Florence, Italy, in 1892. "I have seen him a couple of times," James wrote home to Josiah Royce, "a fine, soft, fibred little fellow with the perversest twang and drawl, but very human and good. One might grow very fond of him," he confessed, "and wish he'd come and live in Cambridge." In Mark Twain and William James, Jason Gary Horn offers the first thorough investigation of the relationship between Mark Twain and William James, emphasizing Twain's friendship with James beyond their shared intellectual interests. James, in fact, provides the cultural mirror most capable of reflecting Twain's own shifting thought and illuminating his often vaguely defined philosophical observations.

Focusing on the experience of freedom embodied in three Twain texts, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, and No. 44, the Mysterious Stranger, this book encapsulates both Twain's early and late theoretical speculations on the nature of the divided self. From the thoughts and actions of the protagonists in these works, we can trace and follow Twain's fictive map of mind, one that eventually leads to a new vision of personal freedom. Horn moves gracefully and effectively between James and Twain, expounding the virtues of the mind and temperament of James against which we can best observe Twain's mind and philosophical temperament. Providing a fresh estimate of Mark Twain's later years, Mark Twain and William James constitutes a significant revision in our way of viewing one of America's important, endearing, and yet intellectually undersung writers.

Product Description
This important book provides a comprehensive look, from a developmental perspective, of how children and adolescents come to understand themselves during the first two decades of life. It explores every aspect of this central area of social cognition, including the physical, social, active, and psychological aspects of self. The authors present data from several cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of children's and adolescents' self-conceptions, and they present alternative methods for interviewing children about themselves and for analyzing children's responses for developmental level and schematic orientation. They offer theoretical explanations about the processes that account for normal development of self-understanding and contrast these with abnormal processes that arise in populations of clinically disturbed youth. A chapter is also devoted to the study of children living in a remote agrarian setting, whose self-understanding is contrasted with the self-conceptions of children in the United States. ... Product Description
"A very up-to-date 'Consumer's Guide' to the best-of-the-best in addiction solutions. A must read for everyone trying to help solve this problem."-Mark F. Kern Founder and Director of Addiction Alternatives and Life Managements Skills, Inc.

"An instant classic, Professors Cloud and Granfield carefully show how solving existential problems is the only way people "recover" from the metaphorical disease called "addiction." Recovery from Addiction should be required reading for anyone who believes addiction "treatment" is necessary, let alone effective.-Jeffrey A. Schaler, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor of Justice, Law and Society,American University, Washington, DC, and author of Addiction Is a Choice.

"In Recovery from Addiction, Drs. Cloud and Granfield have illuminated the secret side of addiction. The model of addiction most prominently paraded in American culture today represents a one sided view built on observations of the behavior of a MINORITY of persons suffering from addictive disorders, i.e., those unable to make positive changes without some type of outside intervention. In dispelling the myth of the universality of that model, Cloud and Granfield accurately describe how persons fall into addiction and the characteristics of the majority of this group who develop and follow strategies for unassisted positive change. This book is must reading for addiction students, educators and those desiring a reality based understanding of addictive behavior."-J. Michael Faragher, Psy.D. CACIII, Associate Dean, School of Professional Studies,Metropolitan State College of Denver

Millions of people enter or seriously consider entering alcohol or drug treatment each year. In their understandable state of urgency, most first-time treatment seekers and their loved ones may rush to the first treatment option they encounter. They are unlikely to be aware of why one form of intervention would be a good choice for their particular problem or why some approaches may, under some conditions, actually be harmful. Lacking reliable information, they are unable to make informed choices.

Recovery from Addiction offers a concise, reader-friendly guide for substance dependent persons, their families, and friends to help make sense of the full range of available treatment options.

Cloud and Granfield introduce readers to their options, from inpatient and outpatient programs and today's major pharmacological approaches to alternative therapies including strategies for using the Internet to access support meetings and approaches which do not call for life-long abstinence from the substances now causing the problem. They outline the underlying principles of each program, its pros and cons, and what a participant can expect when entering that type of treatment, guiding readers in choosing the approach likely to be best for them or their loved one. They also provide specific strategies for addicted individuals who wish to consider recovery on their own, without groups or treatment.

A vital resource for addicts wishing to recover and their loved ones, Recovery from Addiction is also a valuable tool for health care professionals, from social workers to school counselors, responsible for referring clients to drug and alcohol recovery programs. ... Read more

"Opening" is intended for those who wish to know themselves, who want to understand better the human structure, its limitations, and its possibilities. Its aim is to prepare one for a more intelligent, to show a way toward fulfulling one's role as a true human being. It takes its wisdom from the work of G.I. Gurdjieff (d. 1949), the mystic who inspired artists and thinkers in the areas of philosophy, esotericism, dance, yoga, music and art. The writer and director Peter Brook made a film of Gurdjieff's most famous work, "Meetings with Remarkable Men" in 1976. Segal himself has been the subject of two films by American documentary maker Ken Burns, whose credits include television series, "The American West" and "The Civil War". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An elegant book.
The French aviator, adventurer, and author Antoine de Saint-Exupery, probably best known for his classic children's book The Little Prince, was also an aircraft designer. He gave us perhaps the best definition of engineering elegance when he said "A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

This is an elegant book.

Simple, concise, relevant and very, very lean. Mr. Segal has taken Ockham's razor to his studies and findings of Gurdjieff, Ouspensky and Zen Buddhism. A true work of precision.

The essays, poems, one line observations conversations and Ten Oxherding Pictures have a clarity and directness that is wonderful. One page will occupy one for a week.

Unfortunately it is out of print and high prices it commands indicate a book that book owners tend to hang on to. Snap one up when it becomes available and treasure it.

I have not read the work personally. But I share the exact same name as the author, which counts for a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nosce te ipsum
No other book in quite some time has assaulted the perceptual foundations of conditioned self with such a thud as William Segal's Opening. Clear of all psycho-pompous fluff, the author painstakingly communicates with a minimalist Zen touch the subtle processes unlocking consciousness from the quotidian of programmed mentation. Opening is not so much a literary undertaking as it is a series of loosely connected revelations on psycho-spiritual matters including lyrical parables, conversations with spiritual aficionados, a dialogue with the Tibetan Master Chatral Rinpoche and an exegetic gem on the Buddhist Ten Oxherding Pictures.Opening is a treasure chest of spiritual insights, a testament to a sage realized in the quest to know thy self. Highly recommended for the serious spiritual seeker only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
There are many, many books on "Spirituality, "New Age", "Religious Traditions", etc. Most are informative, but few offer substantial help to the seeker.Mr. Segal's book is one of those few.Hiswords carry an energy that calms and opens, their content offers in-sightsand practices which truly are helpful.

The presentation is in prose, poetry, sketches by the author, interviews with and by the author, andseveral photographs.

Practitioners of Zen (and others) will find Mr.Segal's rendering of the Ten Oxherding Picutres --both in prose and sketch-- incredible aids to experiencing the message and guidance they contain. Practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism (and others) will appreciate Mr. Segal'scandid interview with Chatral Rinpoche.Followers of the Way of Mr.Gurdjieff will find substantial help throughout the book:in theinterviews with Mr. Segal, reprinted from Parabola Magazine, as well as inhis prose, poetry and sketches.Even the photographs of Mr. Segal can stira higher energy within.

MAN KNOW THIE SELF is the central creed, and it's what you'll come to know like none other.

One central word of caution; do not tell anyone that you are practicing the magic of this book while you are still learning theexcercises contained there in.for if you do, you'll lose all the magic you will have gained from this book.

Product Description
In this wide-ranging and strikingly original book, William Swann not only dissects the mistaken assumptions that underlie current self-esteem programmes, but also incisively analyses the nature of self-worth and the 'self-traps' that make achieving and sustaining a sense of self-esteem so difficult. Self-Traps offers a fascinating, controversial exploration of how self-esteem conflicts develop and are played out in all our relationships. It shows how the authentic achievement of self-esteem is often undermined by social norms of competence and love, and discusses what could be done to encourage and sustain feelings of self-worth in society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Real Science not just Self-Help
Swan is a professor at University of Texas in Austin. His book deals (in better detail then I've seen anywhere)with how we fail to gain self-esteem in the first place and how hard it is to learn it later. He doesn't offer athree point program for caring about yourself. In fact, his findings seemto say that people without self-esteem have had a hard life. He feels theydevelop a comfort zone that doesn't include good things or good people.Hesays this because that is what his research shows and research isn't a wordthat many self-help books ever use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for the Beginner!!!!
I am trying to teach Latin to a 2nd and 3rd grader (having never learned it myself) and I have to say that this program is FABULOUS!!!Short lessons that build incrementally to increase true understanding of the language. Also includes interpretations of common Latin phrases. It is really making sense to me and we enjoy it, whereas I have been discouraged and intimidated with other methods.
We will be doing more advanced studies as the kids move up in school-- maybe Mr. Linney offers options -- but for starting out, you CAN"T BEAT THIS!!!!Thank you SO much Mr. Linney!!!!! This book has been a tremendous blessing!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Latin primer ever for the autodidact!
When Mr. Linney received a request from his sister to teach her two homeschool pupils Latin, he searched for a beginner's textbook that could be utilized without much input from a teacher (he lived a great distance from his sister). Finding nothing on the market adequate for the purpose, he penned his own beginner's Latin. The result was a volume that offers the best introduction to the Latin language for the self-educated student without a strong linguistic background that I have yet to find. I had been searching for years for a text that could ease me---a student with no foreign language experience beyond two years of high school Spanish---into Latin study, when I discovered this towering achievement in directed self-education. Anyone of any age or ability can master the material in this book, provided they put forth even a modicum of effort, by the end of which they will have a sound grasp on the fundamental principles of the Latin tongue. Linney's pedagogical approach of presenting bite-sized chunks of grammar in a systematic fashion with extensive review to ensure mastery, is simply unmatched in the world of beginner's Latin textbooks. There is no fluff or pretty pictures to be found here, but the self-confidence that comes from mastering lesson after lesson engenders an enjoyment and love of a subject all too often presented as austere and impenetrable to the uninitiated masses. In addition, he mixes it up with fun and interesting discussions on some commonly used Latin expressions (I was unaware of the meaning of "ca."). He also includes helpful audio lectures and pronunciation guides on his website for free. If, like me, you never had the opportunity to study Latin in a classroom environment under the tutelage of an instructor, and you have given Wheelock a whirl without much success, I implore you to forget all the others for the moment and start here. This book will afford you the proper foundation and motivation for pursuing more advanced works like Wheelock's, Orberg, or Linney's Latin Class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for quick lessons!
We use this Latin book along with the voiced lessons provided on the web site the author mentions. The voiced lessons really help us to have a consistency in our Latin word pronunciation. We are able to read, say, and write Latin up to lesson 30.We take 2 to 4 lessons a week. This book does a great job of review work. Most lessons end with Latin sentences for decoding.I and my daughters, 9 and 11, enjoy the slow/easy pace of memorizing Latin words. This is working for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning latin text
I bought this beginning text to learn Latin myself and to use it to teach my children. The lessons are very simple and broken down into small chunks with only 1 new concept per lesson. I usually have great difficulty learning new languages and have had success with this text. I love that the author has posted free lectures and audio pronunciation of the terms on his website to go along with the text. This has been perfect for a self-learner who needs to hear the words pronounced.

Once I finish going through the text, I plan on taking advantage of the author's free Latin course using a more advanced text too.

Great Latin book for beginners and great free resources to go with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is horrible...
I can understand how this book may seem good to someone with no prior knowledge of latin... That is because i too thought it was helpful before i decided to take a latin class in college. I recently browsed through this book again, and let me tell you... this book majorly simplifies latin to the point of trouble... this book is very short and skips critical information.. Imagine if you tried to learn algebra before you knew how to add and subtract.. Anyway im not sure how this book got such high reviews, but if your seriously interested in learning latin then youll want a real textbook. Wheelock's Latin is a great book ten times the size of this one and far more helpful. Its also available on amazon for $14.95 (less than this one!!). Do yourself a favor and check it out. ... Product Description
Announcing...one of the First Four Titles in the Overcoming Series. The immensely popular international market leader of self-help titles.

Step-by-step guides to self-improvement that introduce the methods of the highly regarded cognitive behavioral therapy technique to help readers conquer a broad range of disabling conditions--from worry to body image problems to obsessive compulsive disorder and more.

The accessible, straightforward, and practical books in the Overcoming series treat disorders by changing unhelpful patterns of behavior and thought. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was developed by psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck and is now internationally favored as a practical means of overcoming longstanding and disabling conditions, both psychological and physical. CBT insists that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors. Even when our situation does not change, if we change the self-defeating ways we think, we can make ourselves feel better. This positive, pragmatic approach is popular with therapists and patients alike.

Books in the Overcoming Series:
* highlight the history and background of the disorder, who is likely to be affected, and what the main symptoms are
* provide a structure ideal for personal use or in a program using guided self-help techniques
*include diagnostic questionnaires, case studies, and workbook-style interactive exercises
*explore step-by-step techniques such as diary- and record-keeping, problem-solving, and managing symptoms
*include overviews of all treatment options
*offer authoritative, commonsense solutions to pervasive, difficult emotional problems
* are highly recommended by experts around the world
*and offer readers an affordable and easy-to-follow treatment plan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Anger and Irritability by William Davies
Outstanding. I bought this book several years ago when I was in a constant state of irritation due to overwork and too little sleep, fueled by too much coffee. I tried to read it back then, but threw it down when the repeated stories drove me crazy :-) When I picked it up this year it all came together, making a remarkable difference in how I react to situations in overdrive. I recommend anyone picking up this book to give it a second chance if the first fails. And I highly recommend this book to those who are running their own businesses.

My family thanks William Davies, I thank William Davis, and I'll have to get back to you about the client side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Anger & Irritability (William Davies, PHD)
Excellent read. It's a quick read (~209 pages) with a wealth of information.Author's style is as if he is speaking directly to the reader.Book consists of 2 sections -- "Understanding What Happens" & "Sorting It Out."The 1st section sets the foundation -- defines terms, causes, etc.The 2nd section, and in my opinion the most useful, focuses on the process of anger control.

The author utilizes a wealth of examples. These examples are referenced throughout the entire text; hence there is a lot of building with respect to situations. Many chapters conclude with projects that urge the reader to review the content provided and to apply it to his/her own situation.

Excellent read.Easy to digest.Thought provoking. It shed a lot of light on my own issues with anger management.

Don't hesitate to purchase this book!Very helpful & eye opening.Though a very good book, I don't believe that it takes the place of an appropriate therapist. What is does do is position the reader to better understand what is going on in his/her life (related to anger & irritability) and to have a more meaningful dialogue with a therapist.

4-0 out of 5 stars A for Effort
Anger is a much more difficult thing to treat than is sadness or fear, and good books in this field are rare. Therefore Davies deserves an A for effort. It is well written and easy to understand.Having said those nice things let me get to the negative stuff. It is written as a self-help book designed to be used by the "patient" but the sort of angry person it is written for is unlikely to buy the book and work through the exercises. (I suspect most of the copies sold are given as gifts, and more in hope than expectation). Most angry people perceive their anger as excusable or justified. They may agree with a general description of themselves as bad-tempered but the moment is comes to discussing a specific action they justify it. Reading and working through the book demands patience and a capacity for self-criticism- rare qualities amongst the angry.
Since it is self-help book is does not discuss the issues that professionals have to deal with in coping with the angry client.
As compared with Potter-Efron's "Letting Go of Anger" it is about more overt anger. The Potter-Efrons take a broader view and also write about less obvious manifestations of masked hosility.(like writing nasty reviews) They are Americans and Davies is British, with many of his examples based on British mores.
One final jab. Davies (and even more so, Peter Cooper in his inroduction) claims that these methods are "clinically proven" because they are based on cognitive therapy which has been"subjected to the strictest scientific testing" (Cooper) but no references are given to support this. It could be argued that references are out of place in a self-help book, but then so are claims of scientific proof.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to controlling responses
As a consultant who deals with conflict management issues, I am always looking for good books to recommend to workplace clients. This book is direct, well-organized, and easy to understand. Simple secrets to tweak your own performance in work and in life. Here are the field notes from a life-long campaign for self-betterment by a multi-millionaire who retired to Hawaii. As you compare yourself to the rules and anecdotes in this book, the path you must take will become clear to you. Then, all you have to do is take it. "Anybody can do what I do, if they will only do what I do," says author Bill Salm. Spanning 40 years in 4 different careers - making a fortune in each - Bill persistently collected his insights and admonitions to himself at each step along the way. Based on the premise that each person may succeed or fail by following or breaking certain tried and true rules of conduct, and that each person may succeed or fail in his own unique way, this book goes further than just psyching up your willpower to do better. It goes into the details of how to make each improvement. Read the Plan that, in 100 months, brought Bill back from the devastation of corporate downsizing in the early '70's, when he went from aerospace executive to homeless soul. With no help from family or friends, he planned his work and worked his plan, never having a bad month even during recessions - ultimately accumulating numerous residences. Now, he can afford to put his work down, pursue his desire to travel clear around the world, and settle down to write this book. ... Read more
