Product Description
'From Self to Shelf is a marvellously rich and various exploration of the interplay between biographical and aesthetic selves, ranging from the great self-inventions of the Romantic poets, through the complexities of revelation and impersonality that characterise twentieth century art, and down to the knowing dramas of reticence and display that distinguish the work of so many leading contemporaries. It includes essays in literary criticism, chapters in the history of painting and of music, biographical accounts, and studies in popular culture, as well as reflections by eminent practitioners. The editors have assembled an outstanding group of contributors, with names both new and familiar, to produce a volume at once absorbing and surprising, warmly alive to the human stories it tells while remaining theoretically up-to-date, and creating a book that is altogether as engaging and thought-provoking as the masterpieces it illuminates.'Seamus Perry.Fellow and Tutor in English, Balliol College, Oxford. ... Product Description
In his new book, Closing the Assessment "Loop": Nurturing Healthy, On-going Self-evaluation in Theological Schools, William R. Myers describes a four-step process of institutional assessment that isboth appropriate to and feasible for seminaries, and that is intended to help administrators and faculty members to cultivate an ethos of regular and demonstrable self-evaluation and improvement in their schools. The four steps are:1) the formulation of questions around an issue that has arisen or problem to be solved, 2) the gathering of data both about the problem and possible solutions, 3) the interpretation of the data as to solutions that are feasible and appropriate, and 4) the choice of strategies to implement that will solve the problem or improve the situation. Myers, then, gives examples of how these four steps might look in relation tothe assessment of all levels of institutional life: student learning, program structures, administrative departments, presidential leadership, the effectiveness of the governing board, and institutional progress toward fulfillment of its mission. Implementing such daily procedures, a school may well find itself better equipped to refine and accomplish its mission because strategic steps to meet challenges both large and small will emerge from this ethos of regular and on-going self-evaluation at all institutional levels. ... 47. Self-Contradictions of the Bible

Product Description
Published anonymously by Burr in pamphlet form, Self-Contradictions of the Bible was, and remains an essential reference work for Atheists, Biblical skeptics and doubters, as well as believers who want to know what the opposition is up to. It is a set of 144 thematically organized pairs of Bible quotations that for the most part, will immediately induce cognitive dissonance in some. You have been warned.

Burr was not an academic: he was a newspaper reporter, an Atheist obviously, a supporter of Darwinism, but an amateur Bible scholar, and sometimes that shows in the selections. Not everything here is, frankly, a direct hit, and the relentless out-of-context quotes mirror how the text can be abused by its adherents. However, this is a working-class Atheist tract. It is not concerned with philosophical niceities. Rather, it is a playbook for use in actual battle.

This is another one of those books which you'll either love or hate. Or perhaps you'll like half of it. It is strange that even in the midst of this critical broadside against the Bible, it is possible to enjoy the poetry and archaic wisdom of this text, and perhaps some of the mystery as well. --J.B. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Gem!
William Henry Burr had the sagacity of collecting all the contradictions of the Bible. This guy wrote something that 150 some years later still as fresh as morning dew! William, created the basis for converting the bible into a Geometry argument (1-1=0). this small but very powerful book demostrates that the Bible is a self-cancelling idea. The Word of God is self-cancelling and it seems that at the end it amounts to zero. Therefore, if god is the perfect supreme being, he could not have written the Bible no it is his word! NEXT!

By the way this is the perfect source of information to be use for defeating any fanatical argument!

5-0 out of 5 stars self-contradictions of the bible - answers speak for themselves
I found this book to be most interesting. The contradictions were given without explanation of them.No explanation was needed.
It just shows that the Bible was written by people..and not by the "hand of God". The old testament was written by Jewish clans. And the God that they served was sometimes full of anger as in Numbers 24:5 and He was not always loving. The written word shows a much different understanding of the concept of God than what most Christians claim these days.
The emplications go on and on.
The contradictions are also listed for the new Testament, including that Jesus says he is not equal with the Father, John 14:28. and that he was not all powerful Mark 6:5.
The emplications go on and on, from the text itself.
This is an excellent resource book!
It will make you think.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not academic
All the contradiction the author mention is not contradiction at all, there are many bible study books written can explain this with very convincing logic, however there are some real contradiction in deep meaning very hard to explain in the bible but the author never mention, those contradiction well known to any person study the bible seriously, in my opinion the author is not qualified to write in such a subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bible Criticism from the Unbeliever
This book was written from the unbelivers point of view. The criticism in this book may backfire, if the unbeliever looks up the Bible verses and reads with an open mind and right spirit. One may be instead be lead to the truth of God.

1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

4-0 out of 5 stars A real time and money saver!
What I mean is that if you spend the approximately $15 and two hours of time reading this little book, it may save you untold money and hours related to church.

Though there are some imagined contradictions, most of the ones listed are very real, most notably the historic contradictions, such as one gospel saying Jesus met his disciples in Jerusalem (Luke 24) and in another gospel met in Galilee (Matt 28) the evening of the resurrection (not a day trip), or whether the Holy Spirit was bestowed at Pentecost (Acts 1-2) or before Pentecost (John 20.22). I noted also an error in the quotation of Hebrews 6.4, making IMpossible become possible, which removed the contradiction, but anyone that knows their bible will note the mistake and realize the true contradiction.

Though there are mistakes in this little 96 page book, one is certain to find more mistakes in 96 pages of the bible than in this book by Burr, and he never claimed his book was revelation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Cut Our 1st Year Marriage Arguments in Half!
My husband and I read this book during our engagement. We would go for long drives and read chapters to each other and discuss the questions at the end. The Selfs, who wrote the book, counsel couples on the verge of divorce after their 1st year of marriage. They took the "if only I had knowns" from their counseling sessions and made them into discussion chapters. This way you WILL know before you get married.

The book covers everything from "Are you a saver or a spender? (and then let's make a plan for our money now)" to "Where are we going to spend Christmas, with your in-town relatives or his relatives that live 3 states away?"

That didn't mean we had all the answers when we got married, but we weren't dumbfounded when the questions came up.

Fifteen years later, still HAPPILY married. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic in an important concept
I read this book years ago, and still use concepts from it in teaching my psychology students. The idea is that we have a tendency to disavow some of our talents, our strengths or uniqueness, and that these potentials fall into "forgotten territory." We become unconscious or unaware of some of our brightest gems. The book gives great examples and explains this concept, how and why it seems to happen, and how we can recognize and "own" our potentials even if they have been exiled for some time. It's an important concept, and an enjoyable book. Particularly important if you plan to work with people in a helping or teaching capacity. ... Read more

For ten years, William Sax studied the inhabitants of the former kingdom of Garhwal in northern India. Sax attended and participated in performances of the pandav lila (a ritual reenactment of scenes from the Mahabharata in a dance) and observed its context in village life. Combining ethnographic fieldwork with sophisticated reflection on the larger meanings of these rituals and practices, this volume presents the information in a style accessible to the uninitiated reader.Sax opens a window on a fascinating (and threatened) aspect of rural Indian life and on Hinduism as a living religion, while providing an accessible introduction to the Mahabharata itself. ... Product Description
This is a study of language and the way that it affects our thoughts and perceptions. The author introduces the concept of the Voice of the Other and the intersubjective world it creates for humans. In the movement from nature to civilization, the newborn is mastered by language and becomes part of the parent's social world. The child's thought is now structured by parental language and speech and memories stored in the unconscious. What is real for the individual are only the images and words that define them. Rothstein uses the works of Freud, Lacan, and Marx to situate schooling in capitalist society. He employs psychoanalytic, linguistic, and anthropological perspectives in an attempt to discover how we think and communicate with one another using unconscious processes. ... Read more
