Chapters: Porterhouse Blue, Blott on the Landscape, the Great Pursuit, the Throwback, Wilt, Grantchester Grind. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Porterhouse Blue is a novel written by Tom Sharpe, first published in 1974. There was a Channel 4 TV series in 1987 based on the novel, adapted by Malcolm Bradbury. The novel itself has a sequel, Grantchester Grind, but Porterhouse Blue has a stand-alone plot. A satirical look at Cambridge life and the struggle between tradition and reform, Porterhouse Blue tells the story of Skullion, the Head Porter of a fictional Cambridge college, Porterhouse. The name of Porterhouse, the fictional Cambridge college, recalls the real-life colleges of Peterhouse and the former Michaelhouse, though the described location fits better with the Old School site opposite Clare College and Trinity Hall. The first half of the name is a reference to the college porters who play a prominent role in the story. A porterhouse is also a type of steak. A 'blue' is an award of the university colours, typically for sporting prowess. Masters of the College include Lord Woofford, who hired Skullion; Lord Jeremy Pimpole; Sir Godber Evans, a former Labour government minister; and Skullion, the former Head Porter. Senior Fellows of the College include the Dean, the Senior Tutor, the Praelector, the Chaplain and the Bursar. For centuries, Porterhouse College has been renowned for its cuisine, the arrogance of its Fellows, the prowess of its rowers and the low level of its academic achievements. The central characters are Skullion, the Head Porter; Lionel Zipser, a research graduate student; Sir Godber Evans, the Master; Lady Mary, the Master's wife; the Dean; and Mrs. Biggs, Zipser's bedder. 4-0 out of 5 stars Better than Porterhouse Blue
Although this book is the sequel to Porterhouse Blue, I liked it better. Not as good as Wilt or Blott on the Landscape, but still pretty good.My other favorites are Ancestral Vices and The Great Pursuit.

5-0 out of 5 stars England's funniest writer strikes again!
Unfortunately Tom Sharpe is not the most prolific author, consequently it is exciting whenever he chooses to grace the marketplace with another offering.Grantchester Grind is a sequel to the Porterhouse series, and is yet another wickedly irreverent satire from the master.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud
Typical Sharpe fare-but reveals more about Sharpe himself than his usual.A Sharpe fan will find his understanding of the author considerably deepened.Henry Wilt and Commandant Van Heerden could have collaborated on this book.I was grateful for this, but some reviewers seem to be disappointed.Funnier than average. As many uncontrollable laughter moments as Indecent Exposure.Logical development of Porterhouse Blue.I will never forget how to make a Dog's Nose.Sharpe's understanding of American business practice may leave a lot to be desired, but I don't see why this bothers some people so much.

2-0 out of 5 stars Grindingly boring
Sharpe is living on his reputation with this one.I suggest you avoidbuying it and read Porterhouse Blue or the Throwback to see Sharpe at hisvery best.

Sorry Tom, but you need to keep your writing sharp!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still a Sharpe classic!
Although not his best, Sharpe still tickles the correct ribs with this, his longest book. Porterhouse Blues was Sharpe's first venture into the academic humor that Kingsley Amiss exploited so well in Lucky Jim, and inGrantchester Grind Sharpe takes the reader deeper into the daffy world ofCambridge. For one who missed Sharpe's 10-year hiatus, Grantchester Grindand his latest book, The Midden, was a welcome return for the reigning kingof British humor. Let's just hope he doesn't keep us waiting that longagain for his next work. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Tom Sharpe (Thomas Ridley Sharpe, born March 30, 1928) is an English satirical author, best known for his Wilt series of novels.Sharpe was born in London and moved to South Africa in 1951, where he worked as a social worker and a teacher, before being deported for sedition in 1961. His time in South Africa inspired the novels Riotous Assembly and Indecent Exposure, in which he mocks the apartheid regime. Upon returning to England, he was a history lecturer at the Cambridge College of Arts and Technology, which inspired his Wilt series in which he derides popular English culture. As of 2004, he was living in Llafranc, Catalonia, where he wrote Wilt in Nowhere. Despite living in Spain he has not learned either Catalan or Spanish. "I don't want to learn the language," he says. "I don't want to hear what the price of meat is." ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wilt by Tom Sharpe
I cannot review the book as it is in another language.I contacted the seller and told her that she sent me the wrong book.I never heard from her.I got great service as far as that goes...the book arrived before the date I was told, but the seller would not communicate with me and I give her an F for that.I wanted to return it to her and get the correct book, but she wouldn't even answer my email. That was a big disappointment.I don't even remember her name or I would supply that so no one would order from her!

I will never shop with this company again because of their return policy of charging a re-stocking fee and an additonal charge for shipping after charging $29.55 for a paper back book. I can not see paying for shipping because I paid for that when they sent it to me.They also want a restocking fee after sending the wrong item to begin with.First of all I paid for the shipping myself when they sent it and now they want to charge me again so I feel they are stretching things a bit here and will not shop here again and would never recommend to anyone to purchase from them. ... From the supplier: The impact of sequential behavior feedback protocol based on observational data on the usage of sequential teaching strategies were investigated in a sample of practice teachers. The study revealed that effective teacher education involved the combined use of personal experiences with sequential behavior feedback. Differences in qualitative and observational feedback were seen in daily teacher-student relationships. Classroom instruction predicted the practice teaching experience. Positive changes were seen in the behavior of the students upon using sequential strategies.
