Product Description
The Village of Sheffield was founded on the Lake Erie plain and a sandy ridge of glacial Lake Warren. Black River and French Creek course through rich farmlands, once home to Archaic and Woodland Indians. Originally surveyed as Township 7 of Range 17 in the Connecticut Western Reserve, hearty pioneers arrived here in 1815 from the Berkshire Mountains of New England, naming their settlement Sheffield after their Massachusetts town. In the mid-1800s, another wave of immigrants arrived from Bavaria, adding cultural richness to the community. In 1894, industrialist Tom Johnson constructed giant steel mills on the west side of the river, and Sheffield Village eventually broke away, choosing to retain its agrarian identity. Today Sheffield Village is in transition to a modern residential/commercial community but keeps much of its natural character by virtue of parklands along stream valleys. Fortunately, fine examples of homestead architecture have been preserved throughout the village. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lightweight, fun stories from Sheffield
To start with, this is a collection of some stories that Sheffield has written over the years. In fact, I seem to remember reading a few of them elsewhere, although that could have been in a different Sheffield collection or possibly in Science Fiction Magazines. The stories all have to do with the two members of a legal firm many years from now. These guys have a tendency to get into (and out of) trouble, both on Earth and on many of the Planetary bodies in the Solar System. There isn't much science in these stories, so you don't need a degree to enjoy them, but they are just fun romps.Usually, pure, dumb luck is all that saves these heroes, although the rest of Humanity seems to think they know what they're doing.

A recommended read, especially for those who liked the MacAndrew stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Asimov On Heinlein
I particularly liked this issue of the digest size sci-fi pulp because in his editorial, Isaac Asimov discusses my favorite author the late Robert A. Heinlein's book Grumbles From The Grave. Here's a brief quote: "I was astonished at the trouble that Heinlein seemed to have in connection with money and with the efforts of editors to force him to revise his novels. As the universally acknowledged master of the art of science fiction writing, it seemed to me that he should have had trouble in neither direction..."Of course there are also good stories by Charles Sheffield and others. ...
