Excerpt: Lewis Capet Shepard (September 2, 1841 April 27, 1919) was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio and was a Union Navy sailor during the American Civil War who received America's highest military decoration the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Second Battle of Fort Fisher. Due to a Navy clerical error however his citation and history will always record his first name as Louis Shepard enlisted as a private in Company I, of the 19th Ohio Infantry, mustering in on the 27th of April 1861 for a term of three months. During that time he participated in the Battle of Rich Mountain in Randolph County, Virginia (now West Virginia). This first major land ba...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6125069 ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good For making money with Non-fiction, not as good for fiction
This is a good book to learn how to use CreateSpace; especially if you write non-fiction, which everyone says is an easier way to make a living. The problem is when you write fiction; its so much harder to market and make money. I also wish there was more information on book formatting.

But this still is a good book for non-fiction writers. It was worth buying, but you will also need more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Helpful Guide on Self-Publishing
"Thank you, Christy Pinheiro & Nick Russell, for helping me through my self-publishing journey with your wonderful "page-turning" guide on how to succeed in the Amazon CreateSpace program.Your tips, especially on identifying a publisher's name and your interviews with other experts, were all priceless." Teresa LeYung Ryan, writing-career coach, author of Build My Writer's Name and Platform: Attract Agents, Acquisition Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention

4-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book
I recently used this book as a guide for self-publishing my own work and it was essential to my success in creating an eye-catching, well-reviewed book myself. It does live up to its title in that it really does take those new to publishing through the process step by step, from writing a marketable product to setting up your own publishing company to actually publishing with Create Space. For me, the sections explaining business and legal issues such as establishing a sole proprietorship, buying ISBN numbers, setting up a business tax number, and so on were extremely helpful. I also found many ideas under the marketing advice chapters to be very useful.

One weakness of the book is its vague and brief reference to doing the formatting and layout of your book and I could not have accomplished that without outside help. It is a huge task not to be underestimated. To be fair, the author notes other books one could use for help in formatting. Secondly, if you do not reside in the US then you might find, as I did, that you will need to obtain extra information about how to set up a publishing name, etc; however, that is not a criticism of the book but only a note.

Otherwise, this book led me through every step without any confusion. I was interested in the book as an example of self-publishing through Create Space, as well. It is not without its technical flaws but overall helps one to judge what an end product might look like. (I would recommend would-be self-publishers to use text that is flush both left and right. Just a detail that makes the book look sharper). I also contacted the editor of the Step by Step Guide, Cindy Sherwood, and can highly recommend her excellent support as an editor.

The book I created with the help of this guide looks sharp, is printed well, and has received excellent reviews. Friends who look at the book consistently remark that it looks totally professional; ie good printing, not amateurish. However, some copies of the book do print with "thinner" looking ink so I would recommend using a good solid font (perhaps not the Garamond font that C. Pinheiro used).

Finally, I can recommend this book for the inspirational words and real-life examples sprinkled throughout the text. They are a plus that help keep one focused.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monster Helpful
Remember when you were a kid and you worried about the monster
in the closet? Then your Dad or Mom explained there was nothing
there to worry about and you'd rest easy. Well, if you're worried that
putting together a book is a monster job, this guide by Pinheiro and
Russell will let you rest easy.

It's chock full of practical facts that open the publishing closet door
and let you concentrate of the art and creativity you'd like to express.
If your monster is made up of retained rights, ISBN's, trim size, file
formats, font selection, tax issues, your own website etc., get this
guide and start the book you've always wanted to write. Once you
read it, you'll rest easy...except for the writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended Reading for All published authors!!!
SETUP YOUR OWN PUBLISHING COMPANY AND SELF-PUBLISH YOUR OWN NON-FICTION BOOK...

I'm a published author and used a vanity press. Didn't know better and just retired from the military two years earlier (this was back in 2001). Had a burning desire to become a published author and share what I've learned. The publisher I worked with promised me the sky and ceiling in exchange for publishing fees. I fell for it without thinking. Little did I know that they were "making money hand over fist" and I collected ZERO royalties!Customers were buying the book from amazon.com but I saw NO royalties!

Not three months later after the book was published, the company went into bankruptcy and out of business. My two books no longer sell on amazon.com and I will NEVER trust a traditional publisher again unless they offer me a written contract with a monetary advance.

Welcome Christy Pinheiro's book on Self-Publishing.I only wish I had this information sooner as I COULD HAVE DONE EVERYTHING well explained in the book FOR A FRACTION of what that so-called publisher did. Christy explains everything from book conception, into final print in tandem with amazon.com.

THE BEST PART... YOU'RE IN CONTROL... NOT YOUR PUBLISHER!

STAY AWAY FROM AND AVOID VANITY PRESSES!!!

THEY ARE DANGEROUS TO YOUR MANUSCRIPT'S HEALTH.

Buy Christy's book and you WON'T be disappointed!
