Product Description
These letters give an insight into the life of a writer whose novels continue to be bestsellers. They reveal much about Charlotte Bront:e's personal life, her family relationships, and the society in which she lived. Many of her early letters are written with vigour, vivacity, and an engaging aptitude for self-mockery. In contrast, her letters to her "master", the Belgian schoolteacher Constantin Heger, reveal her intense, obsessive longing for some response from him. Other letters are deeply moving, when Charlotte endures the agony of her brother's and sisters' untimely deaths. We learn also of the progress of her writing, including the astonishing success of Jane Eyre, and of her contacts with her publishers, including the young George Smith; and we recognize in her letters the life-experiences which are transmuted into the art of her novels. Contemporary society is brilliantly described in her letters from London, when she writes of her encounters with famous writers and with critics of her novels. We hear too of her visits to art galleries, operas, and the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace. Dramatic letters written in December 1852 convey the "turbulence of feeling" in the Haworth curate Arthur Nicholls's proposal of marriage to her and in Mr Bront:e's violent reaction to it; and we subsequently hear of her secret correspondence with her suitor, her father's eventual consent, and her tragically brief happy marriage, cut short by her death in March 1855. ... Product Description
Charlotte Smith (1749-1806) was a prolific writer whose independence of outlook marks her out as a strikingly modern figure. Her poetry was admired by Wordsworth, and although her work was later neglected, she is now being recognised as a major poet whose Romantic sensibility was an expression of specifically female experience. This selection reveals Charlotte Smith as a moving, memorable poet, her responses to natural and emotional landscapes marked by vividly particular observation. This selection provides an ideal introduction to the full range of Charlotte Smith's work. Her influential sonnets and her poems for children, extracts from her French Revolution poem The Emigrants and the full text of her astonishing Beachy Head are included here. Judith Willson's introduction and notes give the background to Smith's life and clarify the detail of her poems. ... Read more

Product Description
"Sold, a legal prostitute" in marriage at 15, Charlotte Smith left her husband to support their children as a novelist. Combative and witty, she became a radical, controversial, and popular author at the time when the French Revolution raised high hopes of reform; she had a lasting influence on the adolescent Jane Austen. Loraine Fletcher's vivid biography is as readable for the newcomer to the 1790s as for the specialist, tracing an embattled life portrayed in self-dramatizing fiction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman Beyond her Time!
Charlotte Smith was a Romantic poet who influenced William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge. She had 12 children, 3 died, and she raised the other 9 by herself. Her husband was a womanizer of the worst kind who landed the whole family in debtors' prison. None of that matters in the end because she wrote poetry and novels in order to support herself and her children. The poetry she left behind is beautiful, especially her elegaic sonnets, and her novels can still be found and read today.

Fletcher does a wonderful job bringing Smith's personality to life in this biography.Although I had read much of Smith's works before reading this biography, I felt I understood Charlotte Smith so much better after reading this biography.

Although this biography is written by a scholar, it is very readable and engaging.I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to understand more about Charlotte Smith, her life, the time in which she lived, and how and why she is considered the first of the great Romantic poets. There are many explications in this book of her poetry which sheds even more light on Smith. ... Product Description
Famously commemorated by William Wordsworth as a poet 'to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered', Charlotte Smith is an originating voice of 'the Romantic' whose centrality is at last being recognized, 170 years after Wordsworth's double-edged encomium. Her early sonnets established the genre as a Romantic form; her novels advanced sensibility as a trope beyond its two-dimensional reliance on emotional facility; and her blank verse initiated one of the most familiar of Romantic verse forms. As an innovator, she reflects the Romantic concern with energizing the familiar, while her interests in science and philosophy, apparent in her paratexts, reveal her ambitions to understand her place in the quotidian. This volume draws together the best of current Smith scholarship. Essays are organized according to genre, and contextualized by a substantial introduction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dauntless Doll from the 19th Century
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!I teach high schoolers, whose idea of the world can sometimes look like "twas ever thus"--well, guess what, 'twasn't--and I'm thinking of adding RMH&FD to their biographies list.Charlotte Smith was one of the trailblazers opening up the territory of what being a woman could and should be, a territory that needs still further exploration.Aside from doing such amazing things as running Civil War blockades with medicine and food and publishing a series of successful general interest magazines, Charlotte was one of the first (and most effective) female lobbyists in the areas of women's wages, working conditions, employment rights, and food safety.
Her personal story is one of dauntless courage, self-invention, family struggle, and refusal to accept the various "No's!" dictating proper paths for 19th century women.
The author has brought a singular and fascinating woman to our attention in a page-turning and historically accurate biography.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Charlotte Smith, 19th century feminist foremother
Autumn Stanley has rescued for us one of the nearly forgotten foremothers of U.S. feminist history.During the Civil War, Charlotte Smith ran the blockade and, along with her mother, supplied nursing services in Memphis for the Union army and its supporters.Later, in two of her three magazines, Smith worked vigorously for equal pay for equal work and strongly lobbied Congress for laws protecting women. In her support for equal pay for women, her understanding and influence equalled the muckraking novelists like Theodore Dreiser and Frank Norris who connected how starvation wages for ordinary work forced women into prostitution. She investigated the minimum cost of living for a single woman to show how survival was impossible on a woman's weekly wage. Her understanding and sympathy for prostitutes and her early investigative reporting was noteworthy and in advance of its time.

Smith, well known in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was ignored until now by all American nineteenth century historians and even by Second-Wave feminists.Lucky for us, Autumn Stanley has revived her history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raising More Hell
Charlotte Odlum Smith [1840-1917] - a nationally acclaimed magazine editor/publisher, founder of Women's unions, an early proponent of equal pay for equal work, labor statistician and more - should have a prominent place in American History. We are truly fortunate that author Autumn Stanley, in RAISING MORE HELL AND FEWER DAHLIAS, has pulled Charlotte from the shadows and cast a bright light on her achievements.Ms. Stanley's thorough research is presented in a clear and concise voice ... a voice that rings with great respect for the truth, for her subject, and for feminism.

5-0 out of 5 stars A mystery solved...
Who is Charlotte Smith and why should we know about her?

Charlotte Smith was many things:entrepreneur (blockade runner during the Civil War); author; editor of 3 magazines; founder of the Women's National Industrial League as well as at least 4 other large national women's organizations; and, as one of our first important female lobbyists, she was responsible for the passage of about 50 bills.

She was particularly interested in helping women inventors, equal pay for women and other women's labor issues. She was a proponent of the reform and semi-legalization of prostitution. She pushed for a form of worker's compensation and unemployment insurance and proposed an early form of the CDC (Center for Disease Control). This is all the more amazing when you consider that she did most of her work in the late 1800's and very early 1900's.

Along the way, she stepped on a lot of powerful toes at a time when misogyny was deeply rooted in American institutions. She also did NOT focus on the fight for women's suffrage. These two facts have doomed her life's story to languish amongst other forgotten but important historical figures.

Until now.

Autumn Stanley has done some amazing detective work in piecing together this remarkable woman's life from public records.Despite the lack of private writings, Ms. Stanley has also given us a credible picture of a brilliant, complicated and driven woman who was more successful in public life than her private one.

This book should be required reading for any course on important women in American history!

5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic novelist prefigures Jane Austen Highly Recommended
The title is slightly misleading as the bulk of the narrative focuses on the first-person accounts of Laura Glenmorris and her daughter Medora, as told to George Delmont, the young philosopher.Smith parodies theromanctic/Gothic genre of the eighteenth-century while simultaneously usingboth modes to her own advantage. She critiques the English legal system, especially as it relates to women, and the views of Delmont, and otherphilosophical idealists, as inadequate to fight against the corruption ofEnglish law.Originally published the same year as _Maria, or the Wrongsof Woman_, 1798, fans of Mary Wollstonecraft should enjoy this novel forSmith shares many of Wollstonecraft's social views.Additionally, fans ofAnn Radcliffe and Jane Austen should also enjoy _The Young Philosopher_. The inset tales are suspenseful and humorous while the main plot of thenovel is more complex than a simple love story between Delmont and Medora(told by an omniniscient narrator). As a student of Smith's romantic poetryI was pleasantly surprised to discover this enjoyable and thought-provokingnovel. ... Read more
