Product Description
In recent years the central position held by Charlotte Turner Smith during the formative years of the British Romantic period has become increasingly clear. Although Wordsworth rightly foresaw her status as a poet 'to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered', in our time her fortune has turned and her poetry has been restored to the canon where it manifests a range of metrical experimentation and intellectual resilience unmatched by any other woman poet of the time. Less attention has been paid to Smith's eleven novels and two fictional adaptations from the French because few of these have been reprinted until recently, and the majority have never been reprinted at all. This edition, however, will reveal the extent to which Smith's work in this form constitutes as significant an achievement as her poetry, representing the turbulent decade of the 1790s on its social and political, as well as literary, planes with an unparalleled richness of detail and an unblinkered vision.Whatever sub-genres of the novel Smith engages - gothic, sentimental, domestic, political - she informs with her distinctive social consciousness, which in an increasingly repressive climate is steadfastly liberal and broadly inclusive. In her concentration on the plight of women and of those dispossessed by warfare Smith stakes claims far in advance of her time. The same social consciousness and propensity for fictional realism inform the five books that Charlotte Smith wrote for children, none of which has been reprinted before this edition. For scholars increasingly attentive to cultural values embedded in early children's literature, Smith's daring injection of political and class issues into them and her concentration on the natural world as the central text for study will be seen as crucial in the development of this form. Smith writes with a calculated determination to enlarge the sphere of children's comprehension so as to integrate moral, social, scientific and imaginative education. ... Read more

Product Description

After years of literary neglect, Charlotte Smith (1749–1806) is now being recognized as a major poet and modern figure whose Romantic sensibility is an expression of a specifically female experience. This selection provides an ideal introduction to the full range of her work, from her influential sonnets and poems for children to extracts from her French Revolution poem The Emigrants and the full text of her astonishing masterwork Beachy Head.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy's Master Poet
If you know the work of Clark Ashton Smith only through his otherworldly -- and often acidically ironic -- short stories, then you've not seen his best, in my opinion. If you're a lover of language... an epicure of the fantastic in verse... then find a copy of Smith's SELECTED POEMS and buy it, whatever the price. This volume, more than any other of Smith's works, exemplifies his unending battle against all that is small and petty and mundane, and opens to the reader's soul vistas of unimaginable wonder. There have been many very fine poets of the outre: Lovecraft, Howard, Tierney, Bierce, Fryer, Brennan... but Clark Ashton Smith towers above them all.If I had to choose two books only from my not inconsiderable library, and see the rest consigned to flames, those two would be the Bible and Smith's SELECTED LETTERS.'Nuff said. ... The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Product Description
John Dee (1527 - 1608) is most known for his work with Edward Kelley in contacting spirits and transcribing angelic language. Smith provides a clear retelling of their famous and tempestuous relationship and lays to rest some of the ridiculous stories about Dee. Charlotte Smith’s biography draws from Dee’s private diaries and several of his important works including The Book of the Mysteries and A True and Faithful Relation, bringing to light all his truly remarkable accomplishments. As a man of great learning, he fell under the suspicion of his less-gifted contemporaries and suffered rumor and even imprisonment. But for the most part, he was quite famous in his day, serving as mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer to the royal court of England. Smith credits him for initiating the creation of England’s National Library.

This is the first complete biography of the 14th-century scientist, philosopher, and magician.

Included in the book are 8 plates depicting some of Dee's works and pertinent memorabilia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jane-Austen-like heroine encounters real vice and crime.
This bookmade Charlotte Smith's fortune and reputation and was followed by about a book a year until theend of the decade.Unfortunately the quality of the books to follow often wasn't as good. This isan awesome book about a woman stalked by a rich, good-looking, well-connected man who is aninsensitive jerk.Emmeline is able to see this and cares more for her female friends until the heroenters the novel.Emmeline's female friends are anything but conventional--one has an adulterousaffair and a baby out of wedlock, and another leaves her husband because he is a financial idiot (hetries to use old wigs as fertilizer!)Big, long, and full of detail of life in 1788, Emmeline isa good read.Unless of course you are a modern novel lover like the famed modern novelist whowrote the introduction to the Pandora edition and feels that maybe--if you accept that the novel istrashy soap opera--the book is worth buying more than a salad. The salad argument struck me asjust another reason why I can't relate to modern authors ... ...
