5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Tales 5 stars review
by Sam

Author Sam Smith has written the story of his parents-in-law, Vera and Eddy, during Second World War. Starting correctly at the beginning, this documentary follows Vera and Eddy in the war years. Eddy is a bricklayer who decides to volunteer in the Home Guards. We follow the couple as Eddy is sent almost all over Britain in order to train and Vera has to run her hair dresser's shop under heavy bombing from the Germans. Soon Eddy is sent to France and has to fight his way with the rest of the troops to drive the Germans back. Back home Vera is struggling on with a baby who needs medical attention and a husband whom she does not know is alive or dead.

This documentary is written in a peculiar staccato style that takes a while to get used to. And I have to admit, I was in the beginning wondering whether I would ever be able to finish it. I am happy to report that I was dead wrong. Once I got used to the short sentences and the seemingly (that being the key word) superficial way Mr. Smith describes the two main characters and the hoard of secondary characters, this book was a joy to read. I was soon captivated with the stories of those who experienced the horrors of war. And these horrors are described matter-of-factly and because of the lack of melodrama and histrionics they stand out so much starker. There is a lot of humor here and anecdotes you will never find in the standard books about the War. The Kafkaesque bureaucracy is hilarious and, more importantly, tragic considering that this is a documentary. This is the Second World War seen through the eyes of the regular people - those who died in droves. If you are going to read only one book about the ordinary people's experience of the War in your lifetime, let Vera and Eddy's War be the one. ... Read more

Product Description
Life for country detective George Hawkins is a daily, clockwork routine of petty reports, small-time embezzlement and sleazy divorce. To save overnight stake-outs, shivering in his car, he chalks a line on a car tyre and roadway. The following morning, if the marks still match up, it’s proof enough that a car has not been moved, and someone has been playing away from home.

But then – in the space of a few short hours – he must turn a blind eye to a callous hit-and-run, his home is targeted by a burglar with more on his mind than robbing a few knick-knacks, and his girlfriend mysteriously disappears without a trace. While zealous local police – obsessed with proving his guilt as a murderer – investigate him, George is forced into two investigations of his own that will change his life forever … one into a network of ruthless, high-tech industrial spies and another into his own heart and mind.

As the plot twists and turns, new questions are posed by every answer, and the pre-conceived ideas and prejudices planted by his father – a former Japanese prisoner of war on the killer Burma railroad – are turned on their head. In this baffling, psychological tangle, George no longer knows who is friend and who is foe. And the chalk marks he used to make to prove the guilt of overnight adulterers, no longer match up in his own life.

The Sick Ape of the title dwells in the mind. Although that's not the first consideration of this tale.

First there's the accident of meeting of two divorced and embittered fathers, then comes a cooking and eating of meals, followed by a marriage of disgruntled minds.

The consequence of which leads to the pair of them getting labelled terrorists – all within a book dedicated to non-terrorists – with them finally, and during, seeking to resolve their campaign in different ways. One being death. One being this book.

The greatest Sci-fi sagas ask is there anyone out there and how do they live and exist. In "towards the unMaking of Heaven", Sam Smith takes us to one of these places, where humans are not necessarily the dominant species and first steps of life are emerging from wherever it desires.Balant: A Beginning is book one in a series of five. Each book is intricately linked and delves deeper into what is known as the Supreme Civilisation, until the final drawing together in the finale.Balant, has Dag Olvess, Malamud Bey and Pi Pandy marooned on the very edge of the known universe. Narrator is the priggish Pi Pandy. En route from his mother's substation to university in another galaxy, the ship he was traveling upon encountered a storm of cosmic proportions. The ship about to implode, he escaped in the ship's shuttle with two other young men, Malamud Bey and Dag Olvess. They end up on the planet, Balant, where they adapt to cave life. Finding an abandoned robot they repair the shuttle, investigate the planet, discover that they share it with some primitive savages and a marine intelligence, called Nautili, who are also capable of intergalactic travel. They protect the savages from the Nautili. The savages, and Pi, are then kidnapped by slave traders. Pi escapes with the slave traders ship, collects his friends and rescues the slaves. Thus the plot. Pi is also given to pondering on the meanings of civilisation, particularly on the rule of law. But, generally, it's an updated Boys' Own adventure.Sam Smith (author) - freelance poet/novelist and editor of The Journal, publisher of Original Plus books - is the author of 3 other acclaimed Science Fiction novels - The End of Science Fiction, John John & We Need Madmen. Product Description
towards the unMaking of Heaven, Happiness: A Planet, is the second novel in a series of five. All five novels can be read and understood independently of the others. Where the first book (with mystery, intrigue, kidnapping and escape) was about 3 young men being marooned on the planet Balant, this installment (Happiness) is about a planet that finds its moon has gone missing. This story is told in the third person from the viewpoint of its many different characters - a young girl called Belid Keal, a bureaucratic Head of Department called Munred Danporr, the young policeman Drin Ligure, plus several others, and of course the two principal characters - Awen Mendawer, a photographer, and the heroinne, the astrophysicist Tulla Yorke. At the same time that the moon disappeared all radio communication to and from that planet was blocked. Within Space only farmers and cranks live on planets. An unseen force destroys any craft that tries to leave the planet, except the one Space police ship. During the investigation into the missing moon, and its consequences, the principal one of which is the building of a road though mountainous terrain for the convenience of Nautili, there are 2 love affairs and many considerations upon the nature of government and society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eugene Smith-Master of the Chiaroscuro Photo
Eugene Smith was one of the greatest photographers of the Twentieth Century. He worked as a photojournalist from the 1930's until the 1970's.Smith was able to elevate his photographs from the realm of journalism into high art.His best photographs use the contrasting effect of light and dark in the chiaroscuro tradition of Spanish Master, Francisco Zurbaran.

This volume is part of Aperture Masters of Photography Series. At under ten dollars, there is no better introduction one can find on the life and work of Eugene Smith. The publisher of this volume is Koneman, a German company well known for the high quality of its productions. This book is a good value and is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
If you are interested in photography and want to see a good introduction on an excellent photographer, buy this book. The Aperture edition has most of Smith's important pictures and discusses his personal/professional dilemma, which generally should be read very critically in art books, which informs us of the tension in the photographer, which is the important element of good photojournalism. In photojournalism, the tension should be the informing pointer as to what is going on in the picture.

Smith is one of the most important photographers from the 20th century. His influence was great and his work on the photo-essay is defining (e.g. his Life magazine essay on Dr. Ceriani in 1948). His most memorable photo was of Tomoko Uemura with her son in 1972).

Other 20th century photographers you may want to discover or learn from are: Eugene Atget (late-19th/early 20th C), who documented Paris for artists, but whose work influenced the existential air of 20th century photography; Alfred Eisenstadt (mid-late 20th C), who, in my opinion, was the father of modern photo-journalism; and Mary Ellen Mark (late-20th C), who captured the zeitgeist of late-20th century better than most photographers, who tended to project meaning onto their subjects, rather than receive them as Mark was and is so adept at doing.

Of the many photo books on the shelves, this one is worth your time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and intermediates!
This is an excellent book for getting up to speed quickly on GL 6.I would not call it for the advanced user, but it's excellent for beginners or intermediates with Golive. The tutorials are clear and concise, and the book is exactly what it advertises itself to be - it gets right to the point.

I wish there was also a good advanced book on GoLive that covered using scripting such as Java and CSS and dynamic content in detail, unfortunately there are none yet that are any good.Maybe Sams can do that too?But for beginners or intermediates with GL 6 who want to start using the software today, this is the book to get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Start
I found this book to be a very good introduction to Web design using Golive 6. The lessons are short but well presented, they are fast, and they can be used immediately to my own practice projects. Although the GoLive interface seemed so unassuming when you first open the program, it can get filled up quickly once you begin working. The authors made sure that you don't get lost amidst the plethora of palletes. There is also the confidence that I am reading the work of competent Golive designers who can actually communicate what they know and teach an unknown audience cleverly. Sam's formula, if I may venture a guess works well for this book: plain English, competent authors, short but lively presentation and an exciting software. In only a few hours, I was already making my own web pages and amazed my friends. This book is a very good start in Web design using Golive 6. It is one of my best and most useful books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I had never used GoLive before and was kind of freaked out when I first opened the program. Then I went to an Adobe seminar and one of the authors of this book was a presenter. He was really excellent and knowledgeable, so I decided to buy the book. I'm glad I did! I've now created two Websites and am starting my third. This time I'm getting paid! I know I still have a lot to learn, but this book got me up and running FAST. The best thing about GoLive is the way it works with my Photoshop files. If you haven't used this yet, check out the convert to banner trick!!!! Saves you tons of time!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it again!
After reading some of the reviews here I was afraid I'd made a poor choice because I had picked up this book in a store, but that couldn't be farther from the truth! The book is really easy to follow, laid out logically and the steps worked perfectly for me. Could it be that maybe some readers are new to computers and just don't understand the basics? Anyway, I created a Website using GoLive templates and couldn't be happier. All I have to do is update the template and Poof! my whole site is updated, too. Thanks to this book I learned this and lots of other great tricks. I especially like some of the tips in the book that relate to the Web in general. I like it. Anyway, that's my input. Hope it helps and thanks for listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good look at early MJ
I enjoyed this book; it provided a good behind-the-scenes look at Michael Jordan early in his career. His talent is described as supernatural, but Smith shows that it took him several years to become a championship-caliber teammate and leader. The profiles of Phil Jackson, Jerry Krause and some of the lesser Bulls showed how the entire franchise was altered (and to some degree controlled) by Jordan.

I bought this book used, and it arrived in great condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars must read
for any basketball fan i think this is a must read. this book takes you inside the league and gives you a look at what really goes in. We get to see the bulls as real human beings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Michael Ball
Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen are on a 2 on 1 fast break. Jordan with the ball lays it high off of the glass. Pippen slams it home for two points. I read The Jordan Rules by Sam Smith. This is a book about the Chicago Bulls in the 1991-1992 NBA season. I did not think this was a very good book. It only had a few good details but there were not enough to keep you interested. Another bad thing about this is its long chapters. The chapters just seemed like they would take forever to read. Some of the book didn't even talk about Jordan. It would talk about his teammates like Horace Grant, Bill Cartwright, and BJ Armstrong. They were always complaining about playing time and not ever getting the ball because Michael was a ball hog and the only other person he would pass the ball to was Scottie Pippen. Horace Grant and Bill Cartwright gave it the name Michael Ball. Jordan always had special rules. Like on road trips he was allowed to bring two of his best friends with him so that way he would feel comfortable. No one else on the team was even allowed to bring family members. At the end of the book the Bulls won the NBA Championship. If I were you I would not waste my money in buying this book because that would be a waste of money. There were not enough details and the chapters were way to long. Don't go wasting your time or money in reading or buying this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book on the greatest basketball player ever.
I would recomend this book because it shows the private life of Micheal Jordan and the personal problems micheal went through. The book shows how Micheal Jordan built the Chicago Bulls franchise. How he turned a losingteam to the most winning team of the ninty's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprensive and amazingly well written...!
This book is truly amazing. The author appears to be very knowledgeable but more importantly he is a writer. There are so many poorly-written books about computers, hardware, software et al. that I have become wary of buying, let alone reading... R.W. Smith makes the rather unattractive (at least to me) subject of hardware fascinating: by the time I had finished reading the LHH I found myself fantasizing about building my own PC... If like myself you have found out the hard way that Linux on an i386 means acquiring some knowledge of the nuts & bolts beneath the system and find that with so many components and so many brands to choose from you need something that's both accurate and conceptual this is an absolute MUST...!!! I have ordered RWS's book about networking Linux & hope it's the same vintage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SAM'S Teach Yourself Adobe Go Live 5 in 24 Hours
This guide is excellent, easy to understand and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars sams golive is great
I like to review books and products. I find it interesting that webauthoring and many graphic self help books are mostly text based when they talk and instruct about visual based computer software like golive 5. Even when many books use illustrations, screen shots and graphics to demonstrate commands, features, parts of the program and how to use, their writings are many times confusing, counter intuitive or make the learning process more difficult . Not so for Sams Teach golive 5.

I was hunting for another tutorial llike book to learn more about golive 5 and redo my websites. I wanted a book with more visuals. I stumbled upon this one while considering several other books that had many screen shots and visuals.

The strengths of this book are the way the authors have written this book. Thy write it in the manner that many want to learn - how build websites- not how to use the features. There is a big difference.

The authors actually seem to read your mind as you go through the learning process. I knew many features etc so I was trying to check how well the authors wrote the tutorial type text. Their
tutorials are easy to understand yet comprehensive.

Illustrationsare to the point and are synchronized with the visual. While it is structured way of building and working with gl5 , it is very intuitively and flexibly written to tie in different ways to start, develop and produce with the program. In other books, many features are listed in several places in the index and are very hard to find. No so in this book. Most what you have to find is in one place. If there is more , you are directed within the text. No blind hunting is involved.

They usually come from different perspectives. For example, building web pages. They don't assume that there is only one way. You can create from new, modify others, import from servers, import from already made websites. They anticipate the many needs of the person reading the book.

One of the reasons I chose this book over some of the visual based books that have many more illustrations and screen shots is that they had extensive coverage how to use and insert quicktime video, graphics and more.

The book covers windows and mac versions by showing commands to use in the tutorials. At the end of each chapter, there are usually troubleshooting questions that answer some of the perplexing questions I found difficult to solve. Several times, when I had problems, the authors anticipated these with added explanations at the end of chapters. Some may find the little quizes at the end also helpful.

It does not come with a cd and is very reasonably priced compared to some of the other books which is another reason to buy it as a best buy.

I wish I had bought this book when I first bought golive. No matter what version of GL or operating system , I believe you will find this book will help you. Most novice and intermediate and even advanced users will find it very useful.

I am not sure about other books in this series , but these authors really know what they are talking about and have written the book to relay their ample knowledge. There are other GL books but I would recommend looking at this first.

5-0 out of 5 stars "THE" book to get for the beginner.
i have zero web exprerience but wanted a website. my friend was supposed to help but didn't so i got this book and "the adobe golive 5.0 visual quickstart guide" (see my other review). both books enabled me to overcome my fear of the web and get my site done in record time. although i rated both books 5 stars i'd have to say this is the best for the absolute beginner. its very well written and its tone makes the sometimes daunting task of web design fun. if i had to pick one book for a beginner it would be this one. you can see the proof at...if you don't believe me. the site successfully launched today and i owe my thanks to this book. you can actually do quite a lot in golive. if you want a page with just some text and basic links this book will have you up and running in day or two. my site was a bit more involved but only took about a week after finishing the content. this book sells at a great price for all you'll learn. you can even access a website by the authors for tutorials with downloadable images and stuff. believe the title and get it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference material...
Most books talking about database programming with Visual Basic give only cursory treatment to programming using the ODBC API.They rely, instead on using the "preferred" methods of ADO, RDO, and DAO.However, when your dealing with an ODBC driver that only supports level 1functionality, you can run into trouble using those technologies (as Idid). Then, you are left with no alternative but to code directly againstthe API.I have a stack of database programming books, and this is theonly one to give any real coverage to using the API to read and write datafrom databases (how often do you actually need to query what functions theODBC Driver supports anyway?).My thanks to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found it very helpful.
This is a very good book, much better than the usual example. I read itthrough before trying anything out on the computer, and was able to followpretty much everything.

When I went to the computer, I ran into theerrors other reviewers have noted. But they were pretty obvious. And Idon't think this book contains more than other computer manuals.Proofreading standards in general are awful throughout the printing trades[I'm a former typographer], and the usual poor organization and lack ofclarity of writing in computer manuals compound the problem.

But givenall that, I got a lot out of the book. Most important, I haven't foundanything else that covers this material that comes even close to it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating - Too Many Mistakes
This book is outdated. Not because of Visual Basic 5.0 but because of changes Microsoft must have made to Visual Basic 4.0 after this book was published. This may not be the authors fault, but it makes the book very frustrating to follow. A lot of the code samples in the book don't work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for learning VB
This book does a very good job of teaching a new or experienced user.As an experienced programer, this book help me to refine many of my skills.I recomend this book to anyone who wants to learn VB

4-0 out of 5 stars Many errors - overall good
This is a good book provided you've used "Teach yourself Visual Basic in 21 days" by Ori & Nathan Gurewich. But, there are too many errors in the book.I suspect microsoft made some changes that the authors did not incorporate. For example Dim dyn1 as Dynaset will not work.Dynaset has been replaced with RecordSet.But I couldn't get the Filter command to work with RecordSet and I couldn't use the dynaset set that the authors have in the book.Overall it's a good book for reading but useless to practice the programs with - that's why I rate it a 7.PS, on day 4 use Biblio.mdb instead of Books.mdb.There is no books file.Good LuckKimberly Brugier ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Quick and Informative Introduction to iPad
iPad is one of the most revolutionary computer devices to come in years. Unless you have used one yourself it can be hard to imagine why this would be the case: it doesn't seem to be as easy to carry around as an mp3 player or a smartphone, and it lacks much of the functionality of a "regular" computer. And yet, it is exactly this difference with all the other devices that we are familiar with that makes iPad such a unique and versatile computing tool.

This book is aimed for all the new iPad users who want to make the most of this device. It assumes no prior experience with iOS (iPad's operating system that has thus fur been used in iPhone and iPod touch). All topics are presented in short, largely self-contained chapters that could in principle be read and absorbed in about ten minutes. Chapters are interspersed with many short notes and tips, as well as images that help illustrate the main points that are covered in the text. The topics covered primarily deal with the software that either comes along with iPad or is an ad-on developed by Apple for this device. The explanations in this book are all very well organized and written in an accessible and straightforward manner. There are many step-by-step instructions for achieving particular task, as well as bullet-point lists of useful tidbits of information.

I wish the book had dedicated more space to the third-party apps. There is a brief chapter on how to browse for apps and how to get them, but some of the most amazing uses of iPad are due to the very innovative apps that do not come standard with the device. Since the iPad is still less than half a year old as of this writing, it is very likely that some of the best uses for it have not yet been devised. Nonetheless, this short book provides a very good general introduction to this outstanding new device.

As a side note, I have written this entire review on my iPad. I still don't use it as a full-fledged laptop replacement (nor was it meant to be used that way), but with addition of an external keyboard it can go a long way of meeting most of your daily productivity needs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Leaves you in the dark
I am just starting to use the book.I am working on the part that tells you how to extract text to copy to a word processor.I can't understand why the Text Capture tool doesn't work. Nowhere does it say that you have to be working from a file that had been converted using the Paper Capture function that applies OCR.As I fumbled about and thought maybe the section on OCR is where I should have started, I learn about the Paper Capture function.I go to the Tools menu as instructed and can't find the Paper Capture function. Finally, going to the Adobe website, I find there is a Paper Capture Plug-in download (free).Four pages later, after being instucted to use the Paper Capture function, it is possible to infer that there is a download available.

At least I know not to struggle too much when something doesn't work.It is probably this poorly written book and not me or the program.Try the Help function.Much more useful. ... Read more
