5-0 out of 5 stars complete work of hard to find poems
This book has in it many hard to find poems including the Faerie Queene and many other poems. The Faerie Queene includes all six books, in an unedited version for those who want to read the original. While hard to come by (it is out of print) it does make for interesting if somewhatchallenging reading, when you find a copy. However, you are left to ownresources for any questions, as it does not give complete notes as manyother versions of his poetry might.Language is in original version(except for a few changes in spelling to make a bit more comprehensible),giving the original feeling of the poems.A good find worth the trouble, for those who love poetry, and are willing to wade through the flowery, oldstyle phrases and wording. ... Product Description
The first substantial study on the importance of the women in the two major epics of the Renaissance, this work presents a compelling argument for comparison of the two epics, based on internal correspondence and similarities.  Spenser, the epic poet of Protestant England, recalls in his dedicatory letter to Sir Walter Raleigh other epic poets - Ariosto, Tasso, Homer, Virgil - but is eloquently silent about the great epic poet of Roman Catholicism.  Still, the grand scope of The Faeirie Queene, the multi-faceted role of the women, their importance in the religious and political design outlined by the poet, invite comparison with Dante's Divine Comedy. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Atrocious reproduction
For the 1869 Globe edition of Spenser's works, the original publisher actually managed to get both the complete poems and the lengthy treatise "A View of the Present State of Ireland" into one manageable, compact volume of not-too-microscopic type.(The prose "Axiochus" and "A Brief Note of Ireland," probably by Spenser, were not included.)Of course by now R. Morris's editing of the texts has long since been superseded, but the convenience of the volume might still recommend it, and this facsimile, with its wide margins and bright white pages, is very appealing in design.Unfortunately, the reproduction of the text itself is, much more than occasionally, absolutely atrocious--not because of faults in the original source volume, as the publisher's note might suggest, but, apparently, because the person photographing that volume did not always get both facing pages to lie down flat, so that score upon score upon score of pages are out of focus to the point of being completely illegible.Kessinger may well have printed from a pre-existing microfilm for whose quality they are in a sense not responsible, but, if so, better source material could certainly have been found. It is not that rare a book. ... Product Description
This book is a study of Spenser's conception of the nature of heroism and the way it is embodied in the separate books of The Faerie Queene. Professor Evans stresses the coherence of Spenser's scheme of virtues and examines the fusion of Christian symbol and classic myth through which the underlying Christian theme is expressed. He emphasises the didactic purpose of the poem, and the rhetorical method by which the allegory works upon the reader. It is his contention that Spenser completed his poem, and that The Faerie Queene as it stands presents an organic unity so firmly controlled that it is unprofitable to consider any book, canto or even single verse isolation from the poem as a whole. The complexity of the poetry which this study reveals suggests that Spenser has much in common with the metaphysicals, while the subtle dissection of human motive and behaviour within the poem would place him in closer relationship to the drama than is normally recognised. ... Product Description
This book offers a fresh reading of Spenser's poetry in the light of his Protestantism. Previous critics have devoted much space to the poet's debt to the literature of antiquity and the Renaissance, as well as to his knowledge of Neoplatonism, mythograph, and iconography; but less has been written about the imaginative consequences for his poetry of his Protestantism, largely conditioned by the Elizabethan religious milieu. Dr Hume seeks to illuminate Spenser's major poems, The Shepheardes Calender and The Faerie Queene, by placing them in a relevant context of Elizabethan Protestant thought and writings. Her detailed analysis shows how words, images and episodes in both poems come into focus when the reader takes account of sermons, biblical commentaries, devotional treatises and controversial works of the Elizabethan decades. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The book of chastity
Interesting how this is the book which is supposed to teach the reader of chastity.Certainly, it has its moments when the message comes through loud and clear, but the many footnotes which indicate word play and double meanings sometimes make it clear that there are nasty meanings to the verse. All in all, a difficult but rewarding read.

This story takes place in a fantasy land, with certain characters who must learn about chastity. The original purpose, as stated by Spenser himself, is to teach the reader how to behave chastely. With the numerous situations which can be read as unchaste, it is a wonder the reader can get the intended meaning of the author. But along the way, it has some hilarious moments (the idea of Britomart within Castle Joyeous at the dinner table in full armor including visor comes to mind).I found the book refreshing and entertaining, with several laugh out loud situations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just don't read the notes. . .
I bought the new Hackett editions of the Faerie Queen because I loved the idea of having separate volumes for each of the books. It's a shame they decided to put books three and four in one volume. It's more of a shame that they let this hack write the notes for that volume. The notes are typically either pointlessly obvious or some nonsense masquerading as criticism. In particular, there's no end in the notes of the editor trying to make Spenser into a homosexual sympathizer. Not likely, lady.

If you like the Faerie Queen, pick the Hacket editions up, but skip the notes in this one. If you've never read the Faerie Queene, don't bother with this one--get the Penguin Classics edition instead. That edition has endnotes instead of footnotes, which can be annoying, but at least you won't have so much tripe on the page tempting you to look away from the poem itself. ... Read more

This book is a compelling investigation of a major writer's advent, reception, employment, growth, and influence in an age other than his own. Frushell explores many pertinent and largely unexamined primary documents, and this study serves as a primer for future critical scholarship as well as a guide to crucial primary material. A remarkable feature of this work is its three bibliographies, with the third giving a full account of well over 300 Spenser imitations and adaptations from the eighteenth century. ... Read more

Product Description
Ceremonies of Innocence, originally published in 1989, was the most comprehensive study of pastoralism in Edmund Spenser's poetry undertaken. The book traces the evolution of Spenser's own role as a poet in Elizabethan courtly society through an examination of his use and definition of pastoral. Rather than concentrating exclusively on his works in pastoral genres, it includes pastoral themes, motifs, and patterns in all of the works against the background of ideas about the contemplative life, medieval allegorical readings of Virgil, and the pastoral as an established courtly mode. It specific thesis is that Spenser gradually evolves a 'pastoral of contemplation' as against the sychophantic 'pastoral of power' identified by some Spenser and Renaissance scholars. ... Read more
