5-0 out of 5 stars Through a mirror...
What can I say?My first glimpse of this fascinating mirror into ordinary colonial American life was while I was bartending at a fancy schmancy restaurant on the upper east side of New York City.A customer working on her disertation for her master's in education was reading it while sipping chardonnay and waiting for her husband to join her.

As I passed back and forth, I could not help catching intriguing glimpses of the cover. How, in my quest for knowledge of early American agrarian, culture had I missed this gem?How would the observations of a Franch man compare to those of the incomparable William Cobbett?

Her husband was late; she had a second - and a third - glass. Her concentration became a bit wobbly and the book, to my great delight, was finally laid upon the bar, the well worn pages held open with the aid of a handy bread stick, flakes of toasted parmesan cheese adding a bit of superfluous punctuation.

I can read upside down (most bartenders can; do not forget this for your future privacy).I had got through several pages on dealing with the manners and customs of Nantucket before her spouse, unfortunatly, arrived.I had been too busy to write down the title at the time (yes, I can read upside down very quickly and in short, accurate bursts). But, thanks to the infinite ways of searching on Amazon, I was soon able to discover the whole title.

For those who, like myself, peer through the mirror of history and see ourselves; perhaps our little garden, or spring seedlings, tenderly nurtured, this book is better than any reality show pitting modern man against antiquated inconveniences. It relays the security and the continuity of a job well known and well done.

Buy this book.Read this book. You will never again view a plastic wrapped loaf of bread in the same light.

We visit with John Bertram, the celebrated botanist onhis Pennsylvania farm. We are escorted through the middle colonies toCharelston for a first hand look at the opulent lifestyle of theplanters. Our guide points out the absurdities he confronts while chronicling thebeauty and diversity of the natural landscape. This book provides awonderful and historic experience. ... Product Description

This is a critical edition of the essays that J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur (1735-1813) wrote in English but did not include in Letters from an American Farmer. First published in 1782, Letters from an American Farmer is an eighteenth-century cultural masterpiece. Written in English by a French-born immigrant, it is a collection of semiautobiographical writings in epistolary form that describe daily life along the northern frontier during the days leading up to the American Revolution. Conveying the attitudes, beliefs, aspirations, and conflicting loyalties of common settlers, Letters has helped subsequent generations to grasp the ethos of a nascent America.

More than a century after Crevecoeur's death, three bound manuscript volumes surfaced that included not only the original handwritten texts of most of Letters but also the twenty-two similar writings that now make up More Letters from the American Farmer. Those manuscript volumes are now housed in the Library of Congress. Five of the pieces in More Letters are previously unpublished; the others were first published in 1925-26 but were so inconsistently and arbitrarily edited as to misrepresent the author.

This edition has been awarded the emblem of the Modern Language Association's Committee on Scholarly Editions. It is based on an examination of all available relevant textual sources and includes extensive textual and historical contextual information. Rather than modernizing Crevecoeur's capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, Dennis D. Moore has preserved the original texts as closely as possible. Thus, More Letters marks the first appearance of these twenty-two writings as Crevecoeur composed them.

In his general introduction, Moore discusses the various personae through which Crevecoeur speaks in these essays and notes the stylistic and topical similarities and variations between these writings and those collected in Letters. Pointing to Crevecoeur's evident influences and interests, Moore discusses recurrent themes and images related to medicine, law, religion, classicism, enlightenment philosophy, nationalism, agrarianism, aggression and war, and the cults of sensibility and domesticity.

Revising and expanding what we thought we knew about Crevecoeur and his lifelong absorption in America and Americanness, More Letters also makes a significant contribution to the study of early American culture.

Product Description
From Introduction: "Hazlitt wrote that of the three notable writers whom the eighteenth century had produced, in the North American colonies, one was "the author (whoever he was) of the American Farmer's Letters." Crevecoeur was that unknown author; and Hazlitt said further of him that he rendered, in his own vividly characteristic manner, "not only the objects, but the feelings, of a new country." Great is the essayist's relish for passages descriptive of "a battle between two snakes," of "the dazzling, almost invisible flutter of the humming- bird's wing," of the manners of "the Nantucket people, their frank simplicity, and festive rejoicings after the perils and hardships of the whale-fishing." "The power to sympathise with nature, without thinking of ourselves or others, if it is not a definition of genius, comes very near to it," writes Hazlitt of our author. And his references to Crevecoeur are closed with the remark: "We have said enough of this ILLUSTRIOUS OBSCURE; for it is the rule of criticism to praise none but the over-praised, and to offer fresh incense to the idol of the day." Others, at least, have followed that "rule of criticism," and the American Farmer has long enjoyed undisturbed seclusion. Only once since the eighteenth century has there been a new edition of his Letters, that were first published at London in 1782, and reissued, with a few corrections, in the next year. The original American edition of this book about America was that published at Philadelphia in 1793, and there was no reprint till 1904, [Footnote: References may be found to American editions of 1794 and 1798, but no copies of such editions are preserved in any library to which the editor has had access.] when careless editing did all it could to destroy the value of the work, the name of whose very author was misstated. Yet the facts which we have concerning him are few enough to merit truthful presentation." ... Read more
