Product Description
A time now almost lost—America and Europe of the 1940s and 1950s—indelibly recalled in prose pieces by a celebrated poet.

In a series of freewheeling rambles that combine autobiography and meditation, Gerald Stern explores significant and representative events in his life. He describes the dour Sundays of Calvinist Pittsburgh, punctuated by his parents' weekly battles. We have glimpses of him as a wilderness camp counselor, and later, having been declared 4-F, as a postwar draftee (a stint that includes jail). In the 1950s he savors the romance of Paris. Stern also tells of being shot in Newark—the bullet is still in his neck to prove it. Other scenes include being mistaken for Allen Ginsberg and encounters with Andy Warhol. And in the ineffably tender "The Ring," Stern recalls his mother's second engagement ring, "when they were a bit richer, if a bit broader and a bit more weary."

As in his poetry, Stern discovers his subject as he goes along, relishing that discovery and expanding on it. There is no other voice like Gerald Stern's, funny and reflective and opinionated—and forgiving. ... Read more

The author says in his introduction: "These aphorisms, petite narratives, whatever they are, were written over a period of two weeks in the Spring of 2002.They represent my feelings during that time, feelings that were angry, arch, focused, political, and unified. They also reflect both my reading and the sheer accident of my experience.

"They constitute a narrative of a particular journey and a ‘conversation’ I was having then, both literal and figurative. They are a little ruthless…." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good poetry.
Stern speaks to the heart in these poems.I occasionally tired of his references to literary and legendary people, but other than that, I really enjoyed these. It was obvious he was writing from the wisdom and knowledge of many years even in his early poems which were, after all, published when he was in his mid 40's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry from the Kingdom
Some of Stern's most phenomenal poems are in this collection. His poetry provides a glorious experience for his readers and inspires countless poets. Thanks to Gerald Stern for inspiring me. ... Read more

Product Description
Poetry. Winner of the APR/Honickman First Book Prize, this is the first book put out by the American Poetry Review.Selected and with an introduction by Gerald Stern. Five long poems tell, among other things, "my" story, the bullfighter's story, Old Watermelon Hands's story, a father's story, a son's story, your story-our stories. "What is certain is that the disappearance/of anything is dreadful, stuffed with anxiety./That the unbalanced life is far worse/than the good or bad lives./That the tragic and comic dreams/of falling and climbing/are more desirable than the dreams/of mirrors and puzzles." (from "Purple Heart Highway") Beckman's poems "fall and climb," both thematically and formally. "Joshua Beckman's line breaks:are the lines, sensations, account as if overlapping thrown forward as by a speaker who becomes breathless in the extension [of the sentence] sometimes to minute, concentrated platelets as extension by slight disparities..."-Leslie Scalapino. If you were a scientist/you would understand things differently/the macrocosmic and the microcosmic/would not blur and blend together/they would intertwine like rope (from "Winter's Horizon"), or like the lines of Joshua Beckman's poems. Luckily, Beckman is a poet and not a scientist; his ideas and images blur and blend to make us, in a poetic sense, "understand things."

"Joshua Beckman's line breaks:are the lines, sensations, account as if as if overlapping thrown fooward as by a speaker who becomes breathles in the extension [of the sentence] sometimes to minute, concentrated pltelets as extension by slight disparities."--Leslie Scalapino" Winner of the APR/Honickman First Book Prize, this is the first book put out by the American Poetry Review.Selected and with an introduction by Gerald Stern.Amazon.com Review
Joshua Beckman, winner of the APR/Honickman First Book Prize, is one ofthose poets whose work you mustn't miss. His talent shines in his ability tomake disparate events become part of a whole. "Purple Heart Highway"constructs loss as imminent danger ("where a train might mistakenly come")or as the pendulum between routine and chaos ("a gray grinning calmness /from which you can get nothing to wake") or as a sudden realization thatthreads far back into one's past ("I woke up to a plate full of no options /echoing through the cupped ear of my life / spinning the wheels thatwouldn't, / for anything, take me away").

In "Winter's Horizon" the theme of loss seeks--and finds--its ownsensibilities. A boy writes a story about a father who rides off into thesunset on his riding lawnmower. The boy feels his story is full of meaning, his mother hates it, and his teacher gives it an A+. Yet the lines betweenfiction and fact, between father and son, and between desire and loss areonly the thinnest membranes: "like an engine / steadily moving away / untilit is a thin line / of reverberation / ...and its being gone / gives you aterrible sense / a terrible sense of completeness / a terrible sense thatthings like this / will continue to happen." --Susan Swartwout ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beckman: The Legend Continues
Beckman. A poet once, a poet always. From the formative years in Madison to the blessed years of Hampshire and the ensuing acclaim of the mature work, Beckman has always been a force to reckon with. Now, with thepublication of this volume, Beckman's work is reaching out to the world, which will now find out what many have known for a long time: the man is apoet. No longer does he xerox his poems and bind them in unique ways; no,now the machinery of publishing has taken Beckman and presented him:stunning, unique, essential. Beckman. Now. Always.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intense, insightful, and humerous.
It appears that Kirkus'bias against Gerald Stern has unfortunately ledthem to unprofessionally trash a bright new poet on the scene. Beckman'swork is anything but trite-his words flow, his scenes are graphic, and hissubject matter fresh and invigorating. This is a book to read &re-read, and to share with friends. L. David Howe

Product Description
To drink is to share singular moments, each a mirror of past moments, and to become part of a grand legacy of people who laugh and sing and whisper with glass in hand. A good drink enlivens the mind. It makes us want to talk, and, on occasion, to write. The anthology In Their Cups: Poems About Drinking Places, Drinks, and Drinkers is A.J. Rathbun’s masterful collection of the world’s best drinking poems, from classics to fresh new marvels. It’s a cocktail party where poets from throughout the centuries gather around the bar to spin stories, odes, and songs of sorrow and happiness, surrounded by bottles, ice, you, and your friends. In Their Cups includes poetry from A.J. Rathbun, Henry Aldrich, Thomas Bailey Aldrich, Guillaume Apollinaire, Emily Bedard, Bridget Bell, Allen Braden, Henry Carey, Richard Carr, Catullus, John Clare, Jaime Curl, Emily Dickinson, Philip Dow, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Stephen Dunn, Amy Fleury, Philip Freneau, Du Fu, Thomas Godfrey, Jeff Greer, James Gurley, Mark Halliday, Robert Herrick, Charles Fenno Hoffman, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Elizabeth Hughey, Richard Hugo, Christopher Janke, Jonathan Jonson, John Keats, J. 5-0 out of 5 stars I'll drink to that
I attended a reading in Auburn Washington this evening by the Anchor Tenant Poets. One

I had occasion to read through several works in the book enjoying each poem more than the last,
each making reference to booze, some less than obvious. This book flows like a fine wine.
