4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Review of Soul Solution
by Ken Douglas
January 2010

Hello Linda and Bob.

I wanted to thank you very much for your great book. When I first sat down to read it, I just couldn't get "going," and ended up putting it away for a while. As they say, it's pretty difficult to fill a vessel when the lid is still on.

Anyway---I picked it up after the new year and read the whole book in one day. I've since gone back and picked out parts and re-read them. I haven't been a model citizen all my life, have seen deaths and births, caused heart-ache and joy, but through it all the one thing that kept me sane was the ever presence of Mother Earth. When I was a boy I would sit for hours and listen to the heartbeat of the forest. I still do! When I am away from the bush I miss it with the same yearning I missed my mother. I just have to imagine the road, the creeks, and the breeze in the trees, and I'm instantly back there, with the smells of the dirt and sounds of the forest.

Thank you for writing a great book and doing your best all your life in bringing awareness to the unknowing. Hope to see you both this coming season somewhere, sometime.

Until then, take care.
Ken Douglas

5-0 out of 5 stars A Theology From the Earth
Regarding the Harringtons'book, "The Soul Solution", I want to create an abstract that discusses the salient features of this well-written book, and,of course, I can't,properly. The issues described are very broad and inclusive, having world-wide implications, yet there is a fundamental message that, for me, captures the heart. It comes from a desire for simplicity which the book also promotes. The following example is a rather astonishing excerpt from William James which is included in the book:

I am done with great things and big things; great institutions and big success, and I am for those tiny, invisible, molecular moral forces that work from individual to individual, creeping through the crannies of the world like so many soft rootlets, or like the capillary oozing of water, yet which, if you give them time, will rend the hardest monuments of man's pride.

The Soul has been chosen as the defining metaphor for a "theology of the earth."This "theology" is not about acquiring power (of the usual kind), but of relinquishing it; relinquishing power to experience an abundant and, yet, more sustainable life for the individual and for civilization--something, perhaps, orthodox religion and society have often failed to do in their quest for social influence through power.Bob and Linda (I know them very well, and will write more of this later.) take a "contrary" tack, however--as expressed by the book--and believe in living the environmental message wholly, with their lives as examples. They have, to the best of their ability, given up on living the modern life with all its consumerism and rampant development. They have found time to simplify and get down to basics. I can attest to the fact of this sincerity of purpose. (In this regard I am reminded of Scott and Helen Nearing who wrote "The Good Life".) I have been a witness to the Harrington's life-style, but more importantly, their book also expresses their brand of wilderness living and their belief in contemplative living and reflective prayer with unmistakable clarity.

For me, another one of the unique things about this book is that the age-old concern about the proper relationship to Nature and to human ethics has been around for, surprisingly, a long time. The world's greatest minds and thoughtful philosophers have recognized this ideal for as long or longer than man has been able to write. The quotations given by the author are many and varied, but the genesis of such concerns are ancient and seem to be from one basic set of questions,i.e. man's inability to answer the following: Where did man/woman come from?; What is the meaning of human life (and, by projection all of life)?; Is man so favored that his continued existence is assured? It is surprising that so many of these, sometimes forgotten, references have everything to do with modern survival. The message in "The Soul Solution" is ambitious; it, at least, attempts to discuss the more meaningful speculations. The modern characterization of "conservation" and "environment" is that they are strictly modern, political issues conjured by modern science. It is abundantly clear by Bob and Linda's arguments, that this is fundamentally off the mark. These issues are moral (Soul) issues that man has confronted and must still confront if life on earth is to continue in its present form. The ancients, somehow, knew their importance.

A few years ago my wife and I rode with Linda and Bob to the acreage of clear-cut logging they acquired, which is described in their book. It was here they reseeded, by hand, this large area of land. They also cleaned the stream where Kokanee trout (really a land-locked Sockeye salmon) had access to their centuries-old spawning areas. There were no fish in the upstream waterways due to the debris dams left by logging.Linda and Bob cleared this stream during weeks of hard work. Bob told me that was the last year for the returning fish. It had to be made available that year to synchronize with their annual rhythms and life-cycles. Bob said, "When I cut and removed the last log, the Kokanee almost immediately swam upstream between my spread legs to get to the spawning places. It was the proudest moment of my life." I confess, I didn't see a tear, but he did look away to another direction.

It is obvious that I highly recommend this book to all who have even the slightest interest in a long-term salvation for a reckless world. The fact that its birth is from the beautiful heart of British Columbia's Selkirkmountain country--devoid of the crowds, the restlessness and even the research libraries of cities--should make it all the more meaningful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ecological reasons to be concerned for our future.
By explaining the inter-connectedness of all things David Suzuki, best known for the TV show The Nature of Things, gives us not only an introductory ecological education but tells us why we should be concerned about the future. Suzuki says, "My primary concern continues to be to convince people that there is a real crisis affecting all of us and that every minute we continue to deny or ignore it, the fewer options we will have and the harder it will be to make the changes needed to bring us back into balance with the factors that sustain our lives." Much of the information given will be familiar to well-informed environmentalists, but it has been put together in an easy to read book that even a teenager would enjoy reading. And this is just the type of information that teenagers and the rest of us need if we are to make good decisions about our future. Another Suzuki quote, "Until everyone takes it for granted that the real 'bottom line' for survival and the quality of life is not economics but the state of air, water, soil, and biological diversity, we will continue to perceive the 'environment' as an issue that must compete with other pressing matters." If you are the type that likes to mark the especially good quotes in a book, than you better have a couple extra highlighters when you read this one. ... Read more

Product Description
Using an exciting synthesis of text and pictures, photographer Hans Blohm and scientist Stafford Beers present a graphic exploration of the connections between prehistoric and antique technologies and those of our modern world. In this inventive book, a Byzantine sun-dial and a modern satellite signal receiver are among the many images that have been chosen to show the 'thread' connecting our efforts down the ages to use and record information.
The story of computation emerges as the central theme. By tracing its development from the earliest use of pebbles through the abacus, the slide rule and finally to the most sophisticated modern circuits, the authors present a convincing argument that 'high tech' does indeed go back to the dawn of time. Blohm and Beers have travelled from Stonehenge to the Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico, marvelled over Leonardo's inventions in Milan and examined Leibniz's calculator in Hanover in their search for evidence of the patterns of human invention. They isolate some critical issues in the development of technology, such as the reproduction of written language, and cover many of the outstanding names: Archimedes, Caxton, Pascal, Babbage and Turing among others. With an introduction by renowned zoologist David Suzuki, Pebbles to Computers is a remarkable testament to the depth and richness of humanity's technological achievements. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful and Thought Provoking, with a Kernel of Hokey
A jolly red thread runs across most pages of this STUNNING book, tying together themes that are found both in nature and computing. These connections are the spurious part; many of the interrelations are highlighted by similar looking pictures of phenomena in computing and nature.
Yet, it is visually captivating and contains thoughtful facts about the wonders of nature and the history of computing.
The ideal reader for this book will have a sense of humor; the comparisons are delightful. This book is a romp. I wish I'd had it in high school; it is a wonderful thought-provoker for inquisitive people who don't take everything at face value.
Some things have a kernel of truth; this book has a kernel of hokiness, used as a device to keep the narrative flowing and lively. ... Read more

Product Description
Ecosystems have been compared to a house of cards: remove or damage a part, and you risk destroying or fundamentally and irreversibly altering the whole. Protecting ecological integrity means maintaining that whole dominating influence of humanity. This book, from the Global Ecological Integrity Group, is the definitive examination of the state of the field now, and the way things may (and must) develop in the future.

Written and edited by an international collection of the world’s most respected authorities in the area, the book considers the extent to which human rights—such as the right to food, energy, health, clean air or water—can be reconciled with the principles of ecological integrity. The issue is approached from a variety of economic, legal, ethical and ecological standpoints, providing an essential resource for researchers, students and those in government or business in a wide range of disciplines. It ends with a declaration of the principles the authors believe we must adopt if we are to avoid the destruction that is otherwise envisaged.

Product Description

The earth they walk on, the air they breathe, the water they drink, the sun that gives them energy--not to mention animals and their very own selves: everything about our world excites children. And, with these 50 fun-filled, science-based environmental experiments, kids will discover more about how our planet works and how to make it better. Divided into five themes (earth, air, energy, water, and biodiversity), these activities show how each element operates alone and in connection with the others--and what effect it has on us and the environment. Here are real-life ecology projects to do at school or at home, and for the community. Helped by an abundance of lively illustrations, youngsters will become "supermarket sleuths," finding out where food comes from. They can build a solar panel, make recycled paper, construct a worm composter, and create a forest ecosystem in a jar. And when they're done with each section, they'll take an entertaining quiz or complete a puzzle. There's no better way to develop a child's intimate connection with nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Although I haven't seen the book myself...
I purchased two of these books, one as a birthday gift to a friend and one for my Mom.Both were very impressed with the photos.I plan to read the book when I next visit my folks.

5-0 out of 5 stars capturing complexity
This is, quite simply, the best set of pictures of North America's west-coast maritime forests that I have come across. These forests are interesting, beautiful, and abundantly alive; they are also very hard to photograph.Through the lens they can seem messy and disordered. The unaided human eye screens out extraneous clutter, but thecamera eye does not. There is order there, of course, but it is a chaotic sort of order, with many levels of order-within-disorder. Some photographers strive for excessively neat, tidy compositions, which give an entirely misleading impression of these forests; Graham, on the other hand, conveys the rhythms within the disorder. Many of the pictures aretexture-rich without a sharp focus of interest. It is a style well suited to the subject. The text by Wade Davis, what there is of it, is good, but this is most definitely a picture book first.

5-0 out of 5 stars I spy with my 'large-format' eye...
This book is really special. Ok I am a mate of Graham's which some mightsee as a bias - but this book is oustanding none the less. Osborne is abiologist (infact a botanist) by trade I believe. It simply doens't matterthough, because clearly what he does best is take photos. *Very* goodphotos. I don't mean as in 'Oh, thats a nice photo' as my mum would say tome when from four packets of snaps I produced one relatively balancedcomposition. I mean as in drop-that-frying pan, walk-into-that lampost, draw droppingly good photographs. This guy has had three or four calandersof his work produced for goodness sake. The book, which, ok I admit, hegave me, is always on my coffee table, and I must confess, I have choppedup the calendars and made them into nice framed pictures.

Reasons to buyit:

i) it will enhance your life ii) it will take your breath away iii)it is pretty reasonably priced

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info
The book covers most of the technical info you need as a GS1100G owner. The pictures are not very good, they are mostly black & white and rather unclear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Minimum service manual
The manual says, "This manual has been specifically written and formatted for the amateur home mechanic." This description is correct. The motorcycles covered in this manual are at least 21 years old. Some parts are not available for these models. Owner's manuals are usually lost. Part of the attraction of older bikes is the lower cost, but hiring out maintenance can get expensive quickly. People who buy bikes this old should be prepared to do most repairs themselves.
This manual combines the essential information from both the owner's manual and a factory service manual, and does so at a fair price. People who are mechanically inclined will find the descriptions of the tasks to be quite direct. People who haven't worked on machinery before are likely to get themselves in trouble.
Comparing the Clymer manual with my official Suzuki manual for the GS650G is revealing. The Suzuki manual uses very clear line drawings. Clymer uses black & white photos, which were reproduced with a coarse screen and lack legibility too often. Suzuki explains, for example, how the carburetors work before describing maintenance procedures. Clymer goes directly to disassembly, and in less detail than Suzuki. To be fair, the Clymer manual has some details lacking in the Suzuki manual. Clymer also covers several models, and does so over a time span in which significant changes were made to the bikes . And the Suzuki manual, if it is still available, costs $62.
Anyone working on these motorcycles should become familiar with the GS Resources web site, at http://www.thegsresources.com/
Specific suggestions there go into greater detail than either manual in diagnosing and repairing problems that arise with these older, but still fine machines. The forums also give advice on finding replacements for parts that are no longer available from Suzuki, and on replacement parts that are sometimes better than OEM parts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A confused hobbiest outlook
it is very indepth as far as explaining what to do.however more detailed pictures would have been a definite plus, I found it hard at times assertaining exactly where certain parts of the motorcycle were located.Fora more advanced mechanic I'm sure that this wouldn't be a problem. But forthe hobbiest, I hope in the next publication they would toss in an overalldiagram explaining part location.
