Product Description
The Fugitives were an influential literary group that began at Vanderbilt University in the 1920s. Although the philosophically driven alliance was short-lived, two of its members, John Crowe Ransom and Allen Tate, went on to become influential Southern poets and theorists.

In this work, a self-proclaimed third-generation Fugitive-Agrarian concentrates on the history and mystery of nature. The author supports the recovery of fundamental principles required for the economic, social and political health of our communities. He explores Fugitive-Agrarian concepts of nature, history, science, industry, person, family and community. His discussion focuses particular attention on John Crowe Ransom and Allen Tate and how they diverged in their philosophies of intellect and the written word. ... Read more

Product Description

Here is a book that shows how Lowell was both a charismatic figure and a trial to his friends. His relationships were tense, and although the friends he made in school remained consistently loyal through his bouts of madness, and although his wives repeatedly forgave seemingly unforgivable acts, not all, including Lowell himself, were aware that his behavior often bordered an outrage.

His forty-year friendship with Tate, perhaps more than any other, exemplifies the tension that was generated by a close friendship with Lowell. The varied strands of this relationship constitute the substance of this the compelling book as it exposes and explores the complex psychological and literary bonds that linked Lowell and Tate.

It assesses an ambivalent friendship beginning with Lowell as student and younger friend of Tate, as well as Tate as literary mentor who considered the younger poet to be his protégé even when Lowell was fifty-three.It shows also their mutual love of the formal aspects of poetry and a faith in inspiration that, for Lowell, not only bordered on but sometimes crossed the line into madness. It shows, as well, a Tate sometimes hostile to Lowell's shifting poetics.

Certain aspects of their relationship, particularly Lowell's attempt to find in Tate an intellectual and literary father figure, are of less interest to the author of this study than the powerful impact of Tate's life and work.In The Years of Our Friendship he focuses chiefly upon this result of their intense literary bond.

Product Description
Six American Poets from Emily Dickinson to the Present was first published in 1969. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This volume provides critical introductions to the work of Emily Dickinson, Hart Crane, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Conrad Aiken, Marianne Moore, and E.E. Cummings, six American poets all of whom were born in the nineteenth century and whose various life spans overlap to cover a period of nearly a century and a half, reaching into the present. In his introduction, Allen Tate discusses the significance of this group of poets and their influence on contemporary poetry. He points out that the overlap in their ages gives a somewhat longer perspective to modern American poetry than the rise of modernism around 1912 has led us to look for. "The impressive variety and versatility of contemporary American poetry, including its 'modernist' development", he writes, "has been the achievement of men and women born before 1901". In discussing the six poets introduced in this volume, Mr. Tate offers interesting comments on the place in literary history of a number of other poets including Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, Robert Frost, Phelps Putnam, Mark Van Doren, John Hall Wheelock, and John Crowe Ransom. The introductions to the six poets are based on the material of six of the pamphlets in the series of University of Minnesota Pamphlets on American Writers: Emily Dickinson by Denis Donoghue, Hart Crane by Monroe K. Spears, Edwin Arlington Robinson by Louis Coxe, Conrad Aiken by Reuel Denney, Marianne Moore by Jean Garrigue, and E.E. Cummings by Eve Triem. ... Read more
