2-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing, but not by much
As a weary veteran of the clutter wars, I wondered if this book might give me a week-by-week incremental approach to cleaning up my act.It doesn't.In fact, its content is little more than you might find in a longish women's magazine article, and truly is just a list of 50 helpful hints, mostly not new ones. Its spiral binding gives the illusion of something more useful, but it's really not.
If you truly have no clue where to start in clearing out the mess, you might find this book helpful.Otherwise you will be as disappointed as I was. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Songs My Mother Taught Me
I first read this memorable book when I was in high school.Twenty years later I found myself recommending it to my daughters.Songs My Mother Taught Me is a coming of age story about the manner in which a young woman comes to terms with herself and her relationships with her remarkably disfunctional (fearful and angry) parents. In doing so she draws strength, maturity, and perspective from both expected and unexpected sources: a caring, albeit excentric grandfather, a summer love, and the staff and inmates of an institution for the insane.

5-0 out of 5 stars The passionate emotions of this story are Thomas's trademark
Songs My Mother Taught Me is a heart-warming account of a young girl's relationship with a mother she never really knew nor took the time to care about. The author recounts the story as a fond recollection of her youth and the interactions and friction amongst the members of her family. She is especially concise and sometimes even bitter towards the sister character in the book. Yet these real-life human qualites which Thomas gives to her characters are what keep her readers interested and dedicated to following her work. A true delight ... Read more

We all want a stress-free life. But living with chaos, clutter and confusion contributes to greater stress. Audrey Thomas, author of The Road Called Chaos, presents simple and logical tips and techniques that allow even the most disorganized person to organize and simplify their lives.

The Road Called Chaos not only identifies the organizational problems in life but assists in identifying the reasons that contribute to disorganization. She then facilitates the transformation of our surroundings based on individual personality and learning styles.

Thomas discusses the different learning styles and personality types and gives definitions, which I found particularly helpful. And to further help us she provides actual case studies for different situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely story, excellent writing
I loved this book. It is the story of a woman who moves to the Gulf Islands (off the coast of British Columbia) with her two little girls. She is a writer, a mother, a woman separated from her husband and dealing with jealousies, past memories, and all the emotional baggage of a marriage that has gone sour. Audrey Thomas writes beautifully of the surroundings, the quiet pleasures of island life, as well as therelationships with a few of her women friends who prove to be less than trustworthy. Thomas does an excellent job conveying the pretentiousness
and hypocrissy of so-called artists and intellectuals. Her main character was a woman I genuinely liked.
Audrey Thomas is, in my opinion, a highly underrated Canadian author. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Caricatured by Charles Dickens in Little Dorrit as the cantankerous maid of Mr. and Mrs. Meagles, "Tattycoram" tells her own life story in this utterly compelling metafiction by the celebrated author of Isobel Gunn. Throughout her career, Audrey Thomas has repeatedly challenged her readers to follow her into new territory. In Tattycoram, she does it again, taking readers into the distant fictional world of Charles Dickens’s England, where, in an unusual twist, Dickens interacts with his own characters, allowing Thomas to raise questions about the intersection of life and art.In Thomas’s hands, Harriet Coram gains both a poignant personal history and a quiet dignity. Abandoned as a baby at the London Foundling Hospital and cared for by a kindly foster mother until the age of five, the young Hattie attracts the attention of the Victorian novelist Charles Dickens, who hires her as the family housemaid. In the Dickens household, Charles’s sister Miss Georgina takes an instant dislike to Hattie’s pretty looks and trains her caged raven to tease her with the mocking nickname of Tattycoram. Although Hattie escapes from Dickens and his family to care for her dying foster mother in the country, she is later swept back under the famous author’s sphere of observation as a teacher in his newly founded school for released female convicts. There she befriends Elizabeth Avis, who also appears as another minor character from Little Dorrit. In typical Dickensian fashion, Hattie meets not one, but two, long-lost brothers and falls in love with the one who conveniently turns out not to be her "real" brother. But first, she must confront her benefactor about his shameless misrepresentation of her and Elizabeth’s characters in his latest novel. ... Read more
