3-0 out of 5 stars I can see why it hasn't been reprinted in a while
This is Hunter Thompson, alright, but it lacks the punch of the good Doctor's other, more well-known books. 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' is about the last refuge of the American Dream and those who were crippled in pursuit thereof. 'Hells Angels' is about a group of outcasts who redefined the American Dream for themselves when they realized that, for one reason or another, it was out of their reach. 'Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72' is about the American Dream in action (and the twisted failure the author saw in the result). Dr. Thompson's best work was done in the service of grandiose, ridiculous themes, which allowed him to be true to his own grandiose, ridiculous spirit. 'The Curse of Lono' is a skillfully researched and written Gonzo journalistic account of the author's miserable experience in Hawaii, but I think only the most dedicated of fans would find this essential reading. I'm glad I have it. I'm glad I read it. But, unless you want to read how you can spend the hellish storm season in Hawaii if you have nearly unlimited credit and almost no reservations about what chemicals go into your body, you'll be alright without it.

Product Description
Hunter S. Thompson was the creator of a new kind of journalism and invented a new style of writing. "Gonzo" was a wild, often drug- and drink-fuelled adventure, in which Thompson examined the politics, people, and values of his times. In the three great collections of "Gonzo" writings, "The Great Shark Hunt", "Generation of Swine", and "Songs of the Doomed" he dissected the 60s, 70s, and 80s with violence, wit, anger, and occasional compassion. Collected together for the first time, "The Gonzo Papers Anthology" is an indispensable compendium of decadence, depravity, and a remarkably skewed common sense. 'Hunter Thompson elicits the same kind of admiration one would feel for a streaker at Queen Victoria's funeral' - William F. Buckley. 'No other reporter reveals how much we have to fear and loathe, yet does it so hilariously' - Nelson Algren. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great choice for the price
The book(s) are great, and a must read for HST fans. My only issue is the size of the book, it is HUGE. Very hard to kick back in bed and hold on to. Hell it is hard to hold on to in any position, this sucker is the size of an inner city phone book and then some!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Gonzo than you can shake a stick at...
This book is loaded with three volumes of essential Hunter S. Thompson, providing endless hours of reading enjoyment. Best enjoyed with a tumbler full of Wild Turkey. And be sure to keep the bottle close because you are not going to want to put this baby down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hunter I Miss He Was A Friend Too.....
What can I say I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the Good Doctor and he actually let me stay a whole night at his place.I bought this trio of books for a friend and they are priceless treasures.I can't wait until Anita is finished getting his last piece of work ready for all of us to read. You can't go wrong buying this package for price, content and to find out what Gonzo Journalism is all about.

2-0 out of 5 stars Was hoping for a simple sale....
So I ordered this book early in January, and never received it.
No shipping/ tracking information was given. And estimated time for delivery was a 27 day window...
Now I do understand this was an international order and that would take some time.
But really?

The seller (PBshop) never informed me of when my order actually was shipped so that was a little disappointing. At least then I would have had an idea when it would have arrived.

The reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because the seller did give me a full refund through the Amazon A-Z satisfaction guarantee.

Really wish I could have read this book!!! And very disappointed.... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gonzo review
Great pictures in this work.It could have used some more explanation.Fascinating opening from Johnny Depp.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly packaged
I received the book in an oversized box with one air pillow for protection. With no packing material to prevent the book from sliding in the box side to side the top binding edge was damaged. Very disappointing.

The content of the book was only maginal at best.

2-0 out of 5 stars great book, but poor quality
I gave this two stars not because it's a bad book, but because the quality of it was awful-- I ordered this as a gift for my brother, and when it arrived the cover had clear plastic cracks/bubbles in it, so I requested an exchange and carefully described the defects in the cover. Well, a few days later Amazon sent me another copy, only the cover on this one looked 10 times worse than the first one. When I contacted customer service about the problem, I was told that they couldn't guarentee the quality of the book at this time and couldn't promise to send me another copy with a perfect cover. So, if you are considering ordering this book, you might want to try getting it somewhere else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, balanced review of his life, work and legacy
Great read.Illuminates both his genius and his jackassery. The many voices providing retrospectives create a vivid 360-degree view of what it was like to work and live with HST - the good, bad and the ugly.Bravo.

4-0 out of 5 stars Box? Picture? Individually Numbered?
The review for this stated, "..this extraordinary package includes a specially designed box that contains the book and a limited edition gallery-quality photograph by Thompson. ...offering of only three thousand individually numbered copies available worldwide..." This was a gift for my wife: A huge Gonzo Fan, alomst of mythical proportions. Not too sure what happened to the box it was supposed to come in, or the Gallery-quality photgraph for that matter. Couldn't find anything indivually numbered except each page. Kinda like any book. However....Got her this and a Bukowski piece and Bukowski lays forgotten and she loves Gonzo. It is a beautiful book that inspires joy and laughter in someone who I know would have left me for Hunter in a heartbeat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thompson's history from behind his own camera lens
Most fans of the good Dr. Thompson know him from his words (or more unfortunately, from Johnny Depp's caricature in the Vegas film). Gonzo is a unique book that shows HST's prowess behind the camera lens, documenting his own life, work and experience. The book is organized in a loose chronology of his life, with related excerpts from his writing. From his service days on Eglin AFB in Florida to his time with Sandy at Big Sur and in the Caribbean to the Vegas era and on the '72 campaign trail, Thompson beautifully captured the large and small elements of the world around him. The most fascinating images are not of Thompson's public persona, but the private photos from his time in Puerto Rico, Woody Creek and Key West. HST used the camera to augment his memory; images of a hotel table filled with his odds and ends are as memorable as the more famous photos! The only glaring omissions are photos from the last two decades of his life; the book would be a more complete document if it included images of his entire life.

The 'literary edition' now available is in a smaller format than the original release, but retains the high-quality uncoated paper of the original run. The graphic design of the book is excellent, with vibrating color schemes as surreal as HST's world! I can't recommend it enough to fans of Dr. Thompson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, Fantastic intro, Fantastic bio, FANTASTIC!

Suggesting the nascent ideas and energy of his seminal book on the 60s experience, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, "Mescalito" features Duke's first mescaline trip. "We live in a jungle of pending disasters," the author warns. 5-0 out of 5 stars In a Search for the American Dream
Hunter S. Thompson was a much celebrated American journalist and writer, and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is his most famous book. Written in a style of "gonzo journalism," this seminal book aimed to capture as much as possible the wild and reckless drug-induced adventures of Thompson and his lawyer friend over the course of two journalistic assignments in Las Vegas in the early 70s. The actual protagonists of "Fear and Loathing" were actually slightly altered from the real world personages, as is probably a big part of the actual narrative in order to create more dramatic and deliberately outrageous events.

This is perhaps one of the most entertaining and original books that I have read in my life. Some of the slang and jargon feels a bit dated, but overall the book has aged remarkably well. It is as fresh and lively today as when it was first written. I actually did laugh out loud on many occasions while reading it. Most of the time there was a total disconnect between the cognitive parts of my brain and the parts that were in charge of making me laugh - while I was positively outrageous with some behaviors and situations, parts of me couldn't help but laugh.

The book was also meant as a form of social criticism, especially of the over-the-top consumer culture as symbolized by Las Vegas on one hand, and the overly prudish middle-America in the form of small town police officers and Sheriffs. In the middle of it all Hunter S. Thompson was in a search of the American Dream, and what he finally found it was a burnt-down psychiatry club. The symbolism of it needs no further explanation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Service oriented seller
Would buy from them again.Received book very quickly, had an issue with the cover, seller responded quickly

3-0 out of 5 stars Hunter Thompson- R.I.P.
Hunter Thompson was a journalist in the mid-late 1960's who met and interviewed many famous people, President Richard Nixon among them. He was intelligent, articulate and talented. He is credited with inventing the "gonzo" style of journalism- offbeat comments and atypical analyses which broke new ground in allowing people to see news and public figures in a new light. In "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", Thompson does a road trip and proceeds to get drunk, high and often zonked out of his mind while exploring the local sites. He takes the reader into his mind-altering episodes- and is proud of how many beers he consumes while ingesting various narcotics to enhance the effect. It's remarkable that he could function- or remember much of what he actually experienced to write a book about it.

Thompson "morphed" into the gonzo style and the world at the time loved it. The late 1960's- late 1970's was a time when barriers were coming down and new styles were being introduced in a variety of areas. Music, painting, dance, theatre- all were experimenting with new genres, different ways of portraying feelings, perceptions, moods and experiences...Thompson relished the free-flowing creativity...and let loose with his wacky style that pleased millions of readers.

One must ask whether Thompson's style truly had any meaningful long-term influences on journalism or creative writing in general. Some will argue that his gonzo exploits and commentaries "shifted the bar" to the left- where later journalists felt free to write in a way that would have shocked people in the previous generation- and thus allowed them to break new ground- leaving journalism and the public all the wiser for it. However, wild exploits and drug-consuming episodes fall flat after the initial rush- and that is what happened in the years after this book hit its' peak of popularity. By the late 1980's, Thompson was viewed almost as an anachronism- a "psychedelic relic" of a wilder time- not a serious journalist worthy of respect and admiration. Fans of the comic strip Doonesbury will know the character Duke as Thompson- and likely enjoyed his many crazy comments and adventures.

"Fear and Loathing" will likely be wonderful reading for people in the 18-25 age group who are sewing their own seeds, exploring new places and yes- trying mind-altering drugs. Yet, for the overwhelming majority of the rest of America, this book is a colorful portait of a time gone by...

In Outlaw Journalist, the famous inventor of Gonzo journalism isportrayed as never before. 4-0 out of 5 stars Honest & entertaining yet flawed
You have to hand it to McKeen. He managed to portray Hunter Thompson without glorification or condemnation. After reading Jann Wenners sadly demeaning "Gonzo: the life of Hunter S. Thompson" I had thought it to be an impossible job. The subject matter just about demands taking a stand! Unfortunately - and I don't know if it was just my edition (Aurum Press, London) - but the book seemed to be edited in classic Hunter style: chapters pages and even sentences seemed crudely taped together. Spelling mishaps and simple errors abound. But who cares? The flaws only add to the honesty of the experience. Thank you Mr McKeen for portraying Hunter without an ax to grind!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outlaw Journalist
Some brilliant insights here into what made the famous Gonzo journalist tick. You wouldn't want a dry, academic biography of someone like Hunter S. Thompson, and McKeen, happily, gives the reader a rousing and picaresque ride for his money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well balanced biography.
An essential read for anyone wanting to obtaina deeper understanding behind the madness of Hunter S Thompson's life and writing. In fact, his life was based on numerous personas, many of which were created to uphold his public image. The way he chose to live his life, as well as its tragic end, bore a striking similarity to that of one of Hunter's greatest idols, Ernest Hemingway.
Mc Keen summarizes Hunter's life best when he writes."He was a work beast, and it shows in the quality of anything he wrote in that period. But then came fame, and cocaine, and the suffocating persona he had created...Fame cost him the ability to lose that gift."

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensible Take on a Weird Life
[...]. I warned you not to write that vicious trash about me. Now you better get fitted for a black eye patch in case one of yours gets gouged out by a bushy haired-stranger in a dimly-lit parking lot. How fast can you learn Braille? You are scum. HST."

High praise for William McKeen from The Good Doctor using his own unique mode of expression. Thompson was referring to the William McKeen's book called "Hunter S. Thompson" written in 1991. This was the first book aboutThompson and by far the most popular, perhaps until now with the release of McKeen's new book about Thompson called "Outlaw Journalist."
William McKeen first met Hunter in the late 70s when he interviewed him on stage at Western Kentucky University. No doubt this meet must have been an important one for McKeen who had been a fan of Thompson, and still is. "When I met him, I was struck by his manners and his genuine interest in me and everyone else he met that night." McKeen told me. Though they didn't become what you'd call "close friends" McKeen did have an impact on Thompson later on. As Anita Thompson (Hunters' widow) said "William was a good friend to Hunter" and as Hunter said himself of McKeen "He understands me." To write about a writer like Thompson must have been a daunting task but McKeen came up trumps with his 1991 account of Thompson's life, and considering HST liked it, that in it's self is no mean feat.

When I heard "Outlaw Journalist" was in the works my first thought was; oh no, not another biography about the good Doctor. I was of the opinion that the Thompson`s life story had been squeezed dry, it didn't occur to me that this one could be different. I read it in two sittings and was surprised by how sharp and savvy it was. I am a fan of Hunter Thompson, I'm also a proponent of keeping his memory alive, and I enjoyed this bio as a fan, but it's also very readable for someone new to the sometimes complex journalistic style, and life of HST.

This is the second trip McKeen takes into the world of HST. He leads us down a fine line between the crazy behaviour, and the exceptional writing talent of the Gonzo commentator. It's done with a skill that has eluded Hunters' other biographers. McKeen explores the undesirable side of Thompson whilst his focus is on the writing skills, and aptitude for perfection that Thompson put into most of his work. We are also shown some of the more disappointing times in his life as a journalist, like his failure (and utter lack of interest) to write about the Ali vs. Foreman fight in Zaire where he chose to float in a swimming pool full of sodden marijuana (which he had dumped in himself.) George Plimpton is quoted in the book as saying "Thompson's readers were not interested in the event at all-whether it was the Super Bowl or politics or a championship fight in Zaire but only how the event affected their author." From a fans point of view Hunters' lack of interest was a huge disappointment and regrettably not the only one in his writing career.

The people interviewed for the book were the ones closest to Thompson, the ones who knew him and spent most time with him, not the hangers-on. Folks like some of his high school friends, Deborah Fuller his long time assistant, Anita Thompson, Bob Braudis, Ralph Steadman, Jann Wenner, and many more, all of which serves to tighten the purpose of the otherwise well researched book.

From birth to death to blasted from a cannon. We get an ordered and honest account of his life with many details that will be new to most Hunter Thompson fans. An attention-grabbing look at how Thompson operated, disrupted, succeeded and failed. His health gradually went downhill before his own eyes and he was helpless to stop it. He conceded. Finishing off, McKeen gives a moving account of the blast-off service held at Hunter's "Fortified compound" where his long time wish of his ashes being shot from a huge cannon was honoured by his friends and family, with the bill footed by Johnny Depp, and attended by 150 guests including Senators and stars. A fitting send off for Hunter. And if this is to be the last biography about HST I could live with that.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good job in balancing the legend and the man.
I lived on the property next to Thompson in the 80's and knew him as portrayed in this book. I sold him the Pontiac convertible that is in a couple of the photos. The writing here is tight and moves along well. From my experiences with Hunter this has a BS-factor of about 1 on a scale of 5, good job. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than "When The Going Gets Weird"
I bought this because I am a rabid HST fan and although I knew most of the events in the book, I was surprised that he sometimes physically abused the women in his life. Hunter was from a totally different planet. If you want to scarf everything down by HST, I'd buy it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but boring.
I don't remember where I got this book from but it was during a time when I was absorbing as much gonzo journalism as possible. This biography of H.S.T. is well written and would be perfect if one were looking for a balanced profile of the enigma that was Hunter S. Thompson but unfortunately I had just read The Proud Highway: Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman, 1955-1967 which is a collection of letters he wrote. I thought that the letters, which are addressed to everyone from his mother and girlfriends to bill collectors and colleagues, painted a much better picture of H.S.T.'s early life and times. It also gives so much more insight into Thompson's mind that after reading it I didn't feel the need to read another bio. If you have to choose one I wouldn't recommend reading this biography.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong Narrative but Dated.
Well, I really enjoyed this biography of the Gonzo Master, but I have to warn potential readers that the work was written in 1994 and was then reissued in 2004. It's narrative ends shortly after 1990, and, had I known this beforehand, I would not have bought the book. This was a bit of a disappointment because the later years of his life are deservant of full chapter treatment--and then some. His suicide is a mystery that cannot be illuminated here so be forewarned. As far as Perry is concerned, the author's perspective is outstanding as he clarifies much of Thompson's enigmatic personality. The sources he selects are also very enlightening. This Fear and Loathing, just like the original, was wonderful, but Perry's tale is not definitive unfortunately.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Devil is in the details.... superbly crafted !!!!!!!!!
A piece of history... not unforgotten. Details very well documented. Impressive and an amazing writer. Looking forward to the next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where do I start?
This is a fun book, no doubt about it. Granted, it's not Hunter Thompson writing, it's his life story, but it's certainly worth reading up on. The story is really fascinating and I will probably read it again before too long.

I originally bought this book out of necessity, I had to write a mammoth paper on The Good Doctor back in May and was short of sources. This was the best-looking book that I could find on Amazon, and I wasn't dissapointed by the package I recieved, just in the nick of time to read and then write my paper. Without this book, I would have been in trouble. Thank you Mr. Perry for writing this book and thank you Mr. Thompson for the life it documented. RIP Hunter. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not unless you want the wrong information
if you really want a book about hunter thompson, read "Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson" by Jann Werner and Corey Seymour. a bunch of the dates and names of people in this book are wrong. it's greatly detailed, very candid about many of thompson's assignments and the events, etc., but the number of things i've found factually wrong in this book makes me wonder whether all that detail is even correct. at least in gonzo, the facts are from the people who knew thompson best and were there to see it all happen.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting But Not Scintillating Book
HST is my absolute favorite author but this is a so so bio. I knew about most of these events HST had described and even HST tried to block it. Interesting, but not mind blowing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Thompson Biography
This is the most fact-filled accurate and complete biography of Hunter S Thompson thus far. Also, it contains an interesting psychological profile of Hunter S. Thompson because the author is a Ph.D. psychologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I read Thompson's collected letter's, but they are no substitute for this very well-done biography. The author is not doing literary criticism, it is true- he is doing biography.Unlike most interviews/biographies about this wonderfully unique character, he doesn't drool all over the subject.Thompson did some great work, and the persona he crafted was spectacular. This book, along with the collections of letters, makes clear what a tragedy is the result of attempting to stay on the edge for all of these years. His recent work is all recycling and incoherent parodies of himself.

HST is a wasted hull of a man and a mind. His alter ego became himself and the result was a tremendous waste of talent and creativity. The quality of HTS's correspondence in The Proud Highway makes this all the more clear.I am grateful for what he gave- it's just a shame he couldn't keep a handle on it.

2-0 out of 5 stars pass on this and read "proud Highway"
I don't know.. I have some ambivalent feelings about Mr. Whitmer's book on Hunter S. Thompson. On one hand I really like reading about Hunter Thompson and suppose that I myself am a kind of weird groupie when it comes to reading about him and a few other writers (I bought this one at a garage sale for 50 cents). On the other hand I really dislike reading gossipy books where the author has only a little understanding of his subject or his work and is mainly just trying to cash in on the artist's celebrity, telling second hand stories that might or might not be true. I myself am guilty of reading these little tabloid-like pieces and almost always feel dirty afterward. Especially if the subject is worthy of some respect in his artistic life and HST certainly is. Artists should be given the space they need to work through their inner struggles while sorting it all out. This requires huge amounts of slack for an artist like Thompson. But then after they die all the lies and sentimental twisted memories can come flooding out and it's all so much less embarrassing for them and for us. I do understand why Mr. Whitmer would want to do a book on HST. And his might be better than the other bios as the above reviewers say. But make no mistake, Peter Whitmer did this one to make some easy money and Hunter Thompson's name sells better a lot better than his own. ... Read more

Product Description
In early 1970, artist Ralph Steadman went to America in search of work and found more than he bargained for. At the Kentucky Derby he met a former Hell's Angel, one Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson wrote later that "The rest of that day blurs into madness. The rest of that night, too. Steadman was lucky to get out of Louisville without serious injuries, and I was lucky to get out at all." Thus began a thirty-year working relationship and friendship that gave birth to what became known as Gonzo Journalism.

Few people knew Hunter S. Thompson as well as Ralph Steadman did. This no-holds-barred memoir tells of their unique collaboration that documented the turbulent years of the civil-rights movement, the Nixon years, and Watergate. When Thompson committed suicide in 2005, it was the end of a friendship that was defined by both betrayal and understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Dr. Thompson's long time frienship!
Ralph Steadman goes with HST like chalk with cheese. They were so different from one another but they collaborated together like a well oiled machine. Steadman speaks fondly for the good Dr. but he DOES stand up for himself because Hunter could take people for granted or could be demanding or selfish. Excellent book about two very different men that had one thing in common. They both understood the nature of *weird*. ... Read more

Product Description
Most of my memos get lost in the ether and there was no telling what would happen, but I had some small inkling that sending a memo to Hunter about Lisl was not all that dissimilar to sending a memo to Truman Capote about a murder in Kansas. The difference here was that I had Hunter's fax number.

Sometimes the only thing it takes to change a life is a letter.

While serving a life sentence at Colorado Womens Correctional Facility in Canon City, twenty-five-year-old Lisl Auman wrote an off-chance letter to legendary Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson to complain that his books were not available in the prison library.

Auman's tragic story began in 1997 when she took a ride in the Thunder Chicken a freshly stolen red Trans Am with skinhead Matthaeus Jaehnig. Their brief and devastating journey resulted in the death of Denver Police Officer Bruce VanderJagt. Jaehnig shot VanderJagt then turned the gun on himself all while Auman was already in handcuffs in a police cruiser. Two officers later said they saw Auman hand Jaehnig the murder weapon and she was sentenced to life without parole.

Communications strategist Matthew Moseley also wrote his own memo to Thompson, outlining how to organize a grassroots campaign to free Lisl Auman from prison and to take on the draconian felony murder law. Dear Dr. Thompson chronicles Lisl's epic struggles and takes you inside the last and perhaps greatest Gonzo campaign.

It is a cautionary tale about death, destruction, lies, justice, the power of media and ultimately, forgiveness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Moseley easily taps into the Hunter S Thompson spirit of the Gonzo Way by describing this very real and disturbing tale with such magnaminous zeal and fluidity. He grabs the tiger by its tale and bites down hard. How else can you explain how a book that spends half of its time in a court room is so captivating and difficult to put down? Moseley makes legalese look like poetry and finds a soul at the bottom of the Justice system to boot. Buy this book and pass it on to your friends. You will not be disapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dear Dr. Thompson
Dear Dr. Thompson was a terrific read.Rarely do I pick up a book and just read and read. But, this book was glued to my hands.

What an adventure for all the real life characters in this book.Mr. Moseley is such a talented author and I really felt I could picture all of the events.

Let's hope there are other books on the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling story
Even though I was very familiar with the details of this book, I could not put it down. It is a compelling story well-told. Moseley highlights the ramifications of a serious legal issue - felony murder - while telling the tale of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's last hoorah. You must read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars That's my boy
"There he sits with a pen and a yellow pad,
What a handsome lad,
That's my boy."

All mothers are proud of their son's accomplishments. But what I am most proud of is Matthew's honesty, integrity, and skill in telling the true story of what happened to a young girl who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.It is more than just a story. It describes a benchmark in the author's life when he put aside concerns for his comfort and well-being, even his own life.Politicians often dislike the truth and have disdain for anyone who would tell it.This non-fiction book reads like fiction. "Laissez le bon temps rouler" from this Louisana-born author. A Great Read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Deal. Fast Delivery
Bought the book as a gift.I needed it quickly and it arrived with plenty of time left. I was happy and my boyfriend was happy!

3-0 out of 5 stars HST was right: Ralph should stick to drawing
The book should be commended as it offers some great insight into the, at times, testy relationship between Ralph and Hunter through the years. What I found disappointing is that Ralph's used this book as his latest medium to again whine on about the fact Hunter did not invite him on either of the vegas trips that were the basis for the infamous Fear and Loathing novel. At times, Ralph's continued bitterness is quite appearent and to me just comes off as very unflattering. In Hunter's life, there were many stories and trips that Ralph was not a included. Hunter had many friends and traveling companions like Michael Solheim (a.k.a. Yail Bloor), who accompanied the good doctor on drug and booze filled coverage of fishing tournament in Cozumel.I think a casual gonzo reader may find the book more enjoyable than those who are more avid and longtime fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Jokes OVer by Ralph Steadman
If your a fan of Hunter I highly recommend this book. I'ts written by his best friend, not some second hand source of filtered information,
so it's told how it is, how it was, and what really wend down on their adventures on the job.
The book is also full of Ralph's Gonzo Art - some of the very pictures Hunter requested him to draw.
I feel like I'm on Reading Rainbow right now, but this is a book I'm happy to have added to my collection.
My prop's to Amazon for the best deal I could find on the internet, Thanks.
So if you want to hear about Hunter from the man that was with him on his mission's and how that man was influenced and likewise, than this book is for you, I'ts well writted also. Peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic reading
Ralph Steadman gives and honest, insightful and funny glimps into the work he and Hunter S. Thompson did over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars It wasn't a question of if, but when.
I'm going to miss the good doctor.Hunter S. Thompson, with his faithful English mad man gave us the ultimate in gonzo journalism. This is Ralph's side of the love/hate partnership they shared. For the most part, he does a good job. There are some rants and he pulls off some of his own scabs from life with Hunter. The artwork is first rate and of course, that is what Ralph does best.Still, all in all, it was a good read and I recommend it for anyone who has ever been the sidekick of a huge ego or savagely bludgeoned by the wierd that has gone pro. ... Product Description
The writer Tom Wolfe once described Hunter S. Thompson as the finest comic writer of the 20th century. Thompson was this and more, an apt observer of the American scene for almost four decades, the founding father of "Gonzo Journalism," and an inspiration to many. Through his writings, he examined the loss of American innocence in the latter part of the 20th century and, as a "bull who carried his own china shop around with him," was never afraid to confront the truth head-on.
In The Gonzo Way, Anita Thompson pays tribute to her late husband as a writer and as a citizen, through her own words and through interviews with those who knew him best, including Tom Wolfe, George McGovern, and Douglas Brinkley. With elegant prose and entertaining anecdotes, she reveals a Hunter Thompson who was much more than a mere embodiment of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, The Philosophy of Hunter S. Thompson
If I had to find fault with The Gonzo Way it would be that Anita Thompson occasionally repeats hereslf in the text.I found myself reading one description of a person or place and seeing it again paragraphs later.
That being said the book, at about 110 pages, is not long.A good primer for people wanting to learn the distinction between Hunter S. Thompson and the myriad personas he created over the decades.

I hope there is more to come.

3-0 out of 5 stars Banal but endearing
Look, The book is ok.But the problem is Anita is a light-weight who has taken much too heavy a load for her subject.I have corresponded with her on several occasions and while at first she seemed able to hang in, during the final e-mails she so badly misinterpreted by motives and actual statements that she claimed to have called the "authorities" on me!She went on to call me a "Republican" when my statements were clearly as left-leaning and anarchic as her late husband (which was kinda my point-- a point she missed. lol)

Anyway, the point of this little rechauffe of our personal issues is to meant as prologue to this: she is just too shallow and obtuse a person to handle HST as a subject for a book. Thus, the work is a bit banal and leaves one sighing a bit after each Hallmarkism. But her sweetness (when her stupidity isn't tangling her feet) is genuine and overall I'm glad I read the book.

Although, I bet she would have called the FBI on HST himself if he had written her a letter... ha ha.Hunter deserves a better chronicler-- but if you can get a copy of this one for under 5 bucks go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Thought
The book was very short, but at the sametime very good.Im looking forward to Anita's next book, Ancient Gonzo Wisdom.

3-0 out of 5 stars GONZO: Short and Sweet
A refreshing & touching look at the good Doctor from the person who was closest to him, his widow. A VERY quick read, it offers the reader an insight into what made Dr. Thompson OUR Dr. Thompson. It describes what drove the man that drove a generation. Written as a list of code of ethics{yes,I here you laughing},it shows the humane side of H.S.T.
I was skeptical at first after reading some of the reviews. Most of the negatives are not deserved. If your looking for same old Hunter madness, this is not for you.
If your open to see another side of the good Doctor, as he said best, "buy the ticket, take the ride"....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gonzo Way : A Celebration of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
I bought this as a gift for my son and he was very pleased with it. He loves anything to do with Hunter S. Thompson. He did not even know this book was out there so he was very pleased with it and it was written by his wife so it gave a totally different look at his life. It is also a shorter story and that really appealed to my son. For those of you out there that don't like to read a lot this is the perfect book for you. It gives a lot of detail but is not over written, ... Read more
