Product Description

First published in 1949, Thurber Country remains a benchmark of satirical writing. Now, in this Simon & Schuster Classic Edition, is the original book, with a new introduction by Lillian Ross.

The fact that James Thurber
wrote this collection
of pieces
is,
of course,
a publisher's blurb
in itself.
It therefore is necessary
simply to give
the reader
some factual idea
of
what sort of pieces
they are.
There are
26 of them.
Most
(including "File and Forget,"
a correspondence
with his publishers
which is not
recommended to people
who have
a tendency
to get bad hiccoughs
from
too much laughing)
have
already appeared
in The New Yorker.
Seven pieces
have appeared
in The Bermudian
and have therefore
never
been published
in this country.
You will find
Thurber Country
a place
not difficult to enter,
but
hard to leave. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LET US NOT LOOSE THIS MAN'S WORK!
Alas, James Thurber grows dimmer and dimmer in reader's and public's eyes as time goes buy. This is truly a shame as Thurber is probably one of the funniest of our or social commentators of this past century.I recently took an informal survey of high school seniors (about two hundred as a matter of fact) and not one of them knew or had ever heard of James Thurber. What a pity.Be-that-as-it-may, this particular book is a collection of his writings, short story type stuff, which are really small essays on the condition of the human species.Thurber's wit is at its height here and each small piece is a gem within itself.Of course the entire book is sprinkled with his wonderfully simple drawings which just adds ice cream to the cake. This author and his work are slowly being lost and that is a true shame. Our younger readers are missing much!Recommend this one highly. ... Product Description
Thurber's life baffles and irritates the biographer because of its lack of design. One has the disturbing feeling that the man contrived to be some place without actually having gone there. His drawings, for example, sometimes seen to have reached completionby some other route. In his prose pieces he appears always to have started from the beginning and to have reached the end by way of the middle. This book contains a selection of the stories and drawings that Thurber did in his prime, a period which extended roughly from the year Lindbergh flew the Atlantic to the day coffee was rationed. ... Product Description
In CONVERSATIONS WITH JAMES THURBER this remarkable man who has been called America’s twentieth-century Mark Twain and who was one of the great talkers of his time expresses his opinions on just about everything and recounts stories and anecdotes about his life which provided the basis for much of his humor writing.

These entertaining interviews, conducted by Arthur Miller, Harvey Breit, George Plimpton, Arthur Gelb, and others, span twenty-two years, from 1939--1961. In them Thurber recalls his youth in Columbus, Ohio, his struggles as a student at Ohio State University, and his days of literary and journalistic apprenticeship in Europe as a code clerk and newspaperman who had to recreate entire stories from a few words of coded copy provided by the wire service. He tells too of his early days in New York City when he joined the staff of THE NEW YORKER, of the origins of his drawings, of the pleasures that word games and mental puzzles gave him, and of his increasing blindness and its effect on his work and his perception of the world.

As a man who like to express his opinions and to have an audience, Thurber enjoyed interviews and rarely refused to grant them. With the interview format he became so skilled that he perfected the interview-monologue into a Thurberesque art form, the oral equivalent of the autobiographical essay that he refined in his prose. ...
