Product Description
William Tyndale (1494 - 1536) is one of history's most famous martyrs. Being out of sympathy with the contemporary English church and suspected of heresy, he left England in 1522 and matriculated at Wittenberg two years later where he got to know Luther. In 1525 he translated the New Testament and, by 1531, the Pentateuch. He had reached the book of Jonah when he was burned for heresy near Brussels. This account ties Sir Thomas More, newly named patron saint of politicians, to the betrayal and burning of Tyndale. The extraordinary feud between the two men is examined in detail and the book also includes portraits of Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Cardinal Wolsey. Burnings alive, early printing, book smuggling, and the linking of More, "the man for all seasons" to the betrayal and execution of the most quoted writer in the language (84 per cent of the King James New Testament is word-for-word Tyndale) form the backdrop to one of the most astonishing lives in British history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
It is so neat to be able to read the original translation in Olde English for $.99!Thank you for making this available.

If you know your Bible well, it is easy to pick up the old english spelling, but it could otherwise be challenging. THe word "the" is "ye."Jesus is spelled with Iesus.High is hye, which makes better sense to me than high.

Anyway, Thanks Again!

Product Description
The leading personalities of his century would draw upon all their resources to stop him, from the brilliant Sir Thomas Moore to King Henry VIII; from Charles V, ruler of half of Europe, to the Pope. Both church and state hunted him relentlessly-at a time when the church held power over both soul and body and could condemn the heretic to execution by fire. His crime? Translating the words of the Bible into the "vulgar" English tongue.

He was William Tyndale, and the story of his life, told in Fire in the Bones, reads like a novel, as exciting in its facts as any fiction could be. He knew the smugglers' secret marks and their intense, fraternal loyalty. He tasted the salt of shipwreck and knew the despair of lost manuscripts buried under the waves of the North Sea. Intrigue, safe houses, bribes, spies, covert conversations, last-minute flight, aliases, imprisonment, loneliness, all wove their spell into the riddles of his hidden world. He died at last as a martyr, but not before he had bequeathed to the world some of the most beloved and sacred phrases and terms in Holy Writ, including Atonement, still small voice, and Let there be Light. Readers everywhere will be captivated by his story. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars almost great, but . . . not
This is not a bad history. Wilcox obviously has talent, and is a fine craftsman. Unfortunately, he loses aim and in doing so, shoots his own foot. This is one of those unfortunate books that is almost great, but... not. In his defense, Wilcox covers the major elements of Tyndale's life and often explores the heart of the translator which he does skillfully. And this alone kept me fromreturning the book out of pure annoyance. But however lucid and accurate Wilcox was, he spoiled it by continually comparing the life of William Tyndale with Joseph Smith. However important I thought this book might have or could have been, Wilcox deflated it with these forced and ill-fitting comparisons. I don't respond well to stealth evangelism, and neither does the book. Joseph Smith? For the Mormon audience I'm sure Wilcox will get that delicious applause, a lot of warm head nods, and the occasional Amen. Just give me the history I paid for. Not this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!
Great book to bring the reality of the difficulties faced by Tyndale in bringing the Bible to the common man to light. Excellent work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fire in the Words
Author S. Michael Wilcox Weaves a skillful path through the history of the life of William Tyndale; how he was affected by the politics and religion of the 1500's in Europe and England during the beginnings of the reformation; and his burning desire to see that even a boy behind the plough might be able to read the scriptures.Although the Bible had been translated into many languages, it was forbidden by law to be translated into English; and many had paid the ultimate price for attempting it.The Coventry 6 who taught their own children "The Lord's Prayer" in English were condemned by the forced recitations of their children and were burned. William Tyndale made it possible for you to read the scriptures anytime you want to.S Michael Wilcox links this gripping drama in short easily readable, documented vignettes that make you appreciate the fire in Tyndale's bones. After reading it, I bought three copies to give to friends. Don't miss this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing story about the reformation!
This book tells the story of William Tyndale, how he is responsible for most of the English Bible. It made me appreciate the bible so much more, and how many people died to pave the way for religious freedom in the US.

When speaking to an unlearned pastor, Mr. Tyndale said:"... ere many years I will cause a boy that driveth the plough shall know more of the scripture than thou dost." Three hundred years later, a 14 year old ploughboy in Palmyra, New York went into a grove of trees to pray, inspired by the testimony of James.Words translated into English by William Tyndale.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read!
Michael Wilcox provides a stunning introduction to the life and sacrifices made by Tyndale (and others) in order to bring the Bible to the people.I enjoyed how Wilcox looks at history through the lens of faith and found it refreshing to find a historian who was not afraid to place Tyndale and his efforts in the context of his own belief. This book should be read by any who desire to better understand the miraculous history and impact of the Bible, as well as build bridges of understanding between Christian faiths both reformed and restored. ... Product Description
A selection of the best contemporary scholarship on William Tyndale.

William Tyndale was the first to translate the full New Testament and half of the Hebrew Scriptures directly from their original languages into English and to see his work produced on the early modern printing press. Born in the late fifteenth century, he was educated at Oxford and began his self-imposed exile in 1524 when he was refused ecclesiastical approval for his work of translation. Regarded as a Lutheran heretic, he eluded capture in Germany and the Low Countries for over ten years while he worked on his translations and produced ten polemical pamphlets and works of exegesis. Eventually arrested, he was condemned and executed outside Brussels.

This collection of essays-based on papers from the Washington International Conference celebrating the 500th anniversary of Tyndale's birth-contains cutting-edge work by some of the world's most established scholars currently working on Tyndale. The essays collected here address Tyndale's hermeneutics and practice as a translator as well as his pastoral concerns; treat his theological interactions with his opponent John Fisher, his disciple John Frith, and his adversary Jacobus Latomus; compare Tyndale's and Sir Thomas More's ideas on friars, Turks, and impending death; examine the role of Thomas Cardinal Wolsey in Tyndale's world and in Tyndale's works; compare Tyndale's efforts with those of John Skelton in calling for church reform; and consider how Tyndale's ideas echo in Shakespeare.

The essays make fresh linguistic, historical, and theological contributions to Tyndale studies and give theoretical or practical readings of his lesser-known compositions. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of the literature, history, and theology of the Reformation in England during the sixteenth century, as well as to those interested in Tyndale himself, Sir Thomas More, and the Bible in English.

John T. Day is professor of English at St. Olaf College. Eric Lund is professor and chair of the department of religion at St. Olaf College. Anne M. O'Donnell, S.N.D., is associate professor of English at The Catholic University of America.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Scholarly" denigration of William Tyndale
When it was announced that the Catholic University of America Press would publish a portion of William Tyndales works, there was skepticism as to their intent. After all, why would a Catholic press publish the writings of the man who struck such a fatal blow to Papal power in Europe; and who provided the world with the English Bible, which the Papacy had tried to prevent by tortures and murders? A review of Word, Church, and State edited by Anne M. ODonnell, S.N.D. (Sisters of Notre Dame) shows this skepticism was well founded.

The book is 343 pages and consists of papers presented in Washington, D.C. at a Tyndale conference convened by Miss ODonnell in 1994. Of the 30 papers presented at the conference, 20 were selected, and then edited for publication by Miss ODonnell and two scholars she selected.

In the books introduction, Miss ODonnell gives an overview of the books contents. Here the reader is informed that the papers selected will provide the reader with a scholarly review of various aspects of William Tyndales writings. The papers are presented as taking the reader to the grammatical depths, the theoretical heightsand finally to the aphoristic levels where we breathe more easily. We read comments such as McCutcheon sensitively contrasts the thirteen letters of More and Tyndale, and with this thorough assessment of Tyndales opinions on English foreign policy. In fact, the papers, for the most part, are neither thorough nor sensitive. As Biblical scholars have developed the Documentary Hypothesis to tear down the Word of God, so Miss ODonnell has denigrated the writings of William Tyndale under the guise of scholarism.

The only valuable paper this reviewer found was the first paper by Mr. David Daniell and Mr. Daniells writings can be found elsewhere. By the time the reader finishes the book he will have been told that Mr. Tyndales writings are arrogant; that his arguments for providing the English Bible are hypocritical; that Mr. Tyndale made himself a mediator between God and man; that his doctrine is contradictory; that he was completely ignorant of English foreign policy; and that there are gaps and inconsistencies between Tyndales theory and practice. Not surprisingly, Mr. Tyndales view that the Pope is the antichrist is denigrated. Tyndales translation of the word ecclesia as congregation and his theological position on the bread and wine are undermined with sophistry. Finally , we are told that Tyndale regularly appropriated [plagiarized] the words of others &c.

This reader is left with the conclusion that the little praise Tyndale receives is feigned to appear as though the scholars are fair in their treatment of Tyndale. If you enjoy the writings of William Tyndale, save your money for writers such as Mr. David Daniell. ... Read more
