3-0 out of 5 stars Historically Significant, but Not Profitable Now
Let me say first of this edition that it is superior to many of the other Kessinger reprints that I own. There are no missing pages or smeared text. There are some pages where the text at the edge is distorted, or even missing the first few letters. However, it doesn't usually make the portion unreadable.

I bought this book because it contains some commentary by the man who first translated the Bible into English from the original languages, for which he was executed (see God's Outlaw - DVD - ALL REGIONS). I have the The Matthew's Bible: 1537 Edition (Hendrickson Bibles), which includes Tyndale's translation, with the missing portions provided from Coverdale's translation. I love it. Not only is it beautiful, but it reads nicely, with a Shakespearean feel. I wanted to augment it with Tyndale's commentary. The reprint here includes excellent commentary on a portion of Matthew, dealing with a proper New Testament view of the Old Testament law. It also includes the entire text of First John, which I found too polemical to be beneficial.

Be aware that the commentaries, especially First John, as well as the separate section entitled "The Practice of Prelates," are heavily anti-catholic. Given the papal persecution (and later murder) of Tyndale, his attitude should hardly be surprising. However, some of his attacks are anachronistic, such as his criticism of the Latin Mass. ... Product Description

The fifth volume in Piper's acclaimed The Swans Are NotSilent series illustrates powerful and enduring lessons through themissional sufferings of Tyndale, Judson, and Paton.

Jesus' words in John 12 are sobering: unless a grain of wheatfalls into the earth and dies, it will bear little fruit. Thehistory of Christianity's expansion proves that God's strategy forreaching unreached peoples with the gospel includes the sufferingsof his frontline heralds-the missionaries who willingly die athousand daily deaths to advance God's kingdom.

Pastor John Piper's latest addition to The Swans Are Not Silentseries focuses on this flesh-and-blood reality in the lives ofWilliam Tyndale, Adoniram Judson, and John Paton. The price theypaid to translate the Word of God, to pave the way for missionarymobilization around the world, and to lead the hostile to Christwas great. Yet their stories show in triplicate how the gospeladvances not only through the faithful proclamation of the truthbut through representing the afflictions of Christ in oursufferings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-Changing
All the books in this series have challenged and taught me so much. Each one is unique and an awesome introduction to biography and the benefit of learning from the 'giants of the faith' who have gone before, and the cloud of witnesses whose testimonies the Holy Spirit can use to encourage, refine, and sanctify us.

That said, this book challenged and humbled me more than any other in the series. I have studied Tyndale, and there was nothing new in this book (most of the information is a condensed form of Daniell's biography. His is the ultimate biography of Tyndale, but for something more accessible and equally good, I recommend Moynahan's book, God's Bestseller). Every Christian (and student of English) should know Tyndale's story and the amazing work of God in his life to produce an English Bible and, ultimately, the modern English language.

I knew nothing of Paton or Judson, and what convicting stories! They suffered and endured beyond what most can even imagine, and God used them in world-changing ways. Their lives call us to consider our comfortable, often lazy lives - what are we sacrificing for the Lord? How loosely do we hold the treasures of this world - our families, spouse, home, friends - would we be willing to let it all go for Him?

Finally, Piper's opening chapter on the role of suffering and trials in the Christian life alone is worth the price of the book. Fantastic theology, though faith-stretching as you begin to grasp that suffering is a part of God's plan, and no one suffered more than Christ. Yet, with a sovereign and good God, we have confidence that such trials are working for us a far greater weight of glory. ... Read more

Product Description

Thrilling adventure stories introducing young readers (ages 8-12) to Christian heroes of the past.

Sarah Poyntz is the daughter of an English merchant who operates a shipping business from Antwerp, Belgium, in 1535. Her father is very interested in the ideas of William Tyndale, who has fled England as a condemned outlaw for refusing to stop his translation work of the English Bible. Tyndale believes that the Word of God should be read by the common people in their own language, a belief shared by the Poyntz family.

But when Tyndale is captured and imprisoned, Sarah becomes the only hope for saving his life. If she can successfully smuggle a copy of Tyndale's New Testament into the hands of the king's wife, Queen Anne, perhaps she can persuade him to spare Tyndale's life.

If Sarah's desperate mission fails, her family is in peril of their lives.

Will she have the courage to go through with it? Can Tyndale's life be spared?

5-0 out of 5 stars A gripping tale of courage and faith!
I love this book! I have read it at least three times. Although it puts them in deadlyperil, Sarah's family shelters him from his enemies.Sarah Poyntz, theheroine of the book, risks her life to take an English Bible to the courtof Henry VIII.Although the king is hostile to letting the Bible beprinted in English, eventually he relents. Product Description
What motivated the men who gave us our Bible in English? Much of the answer lies in the turbulent religious history of the era, but there are clues which can be found in the prefaces published with each new edition. This collection of the prefaces to the main translations of the Bible into English between 1525 and 1611 has been prepared to coincide with the four-hundredth anniversary of the fi rst edition of the Authorised or King James Version. An introductory chapter delineates the key events, and this is followed by each of the texts, with notes indicating the sources of the various quotations and allusions. This collection therefore provides the historical and theological ancestry of a much loved translation, and readers can hardly fail to be challenged by the spiritual concerns of the translators.Gerald Bray is Director of Research for the Latimer Trust. Prior to this appointment he taught church history and historical theology at Beeson DivinitySchool, Samford University from 1993, having previously served as lecturer in theology and philosophy at Oak Hill College in London. ...
