5-0 out of 5 stars World Literature At Its Best From Sigrid Undset
If you asked, in a name recognition sense, who was Sigrid Undset - most likely your response would be a puzzled expression. If, however, you are a reader, enthusiast, fine collector of Masterpieces in literature or a student, teacher of great literature - the answer would ring clear as a bell. Sigrid Undset was the first woman in history to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928 for her trilogy (please buy this Masterpiece work from Amazon.com) entitled "Kristin Lavransdatter." Another woman was in the running for the prize - a name many would recognize: Karen Blixen or Isak Dinesen for the great work, "Out of Africa." But no. Sigrid Undset won it hands down. And it has NEVER been out of print since 1928. An accomplishment few authors in history could claim as their own. This book is her biography - most personal, intense, and truly a work of art in and of itself. If you want to know who was the woman behind one of the spectacular Masterpieces among the best World Literature has to offer, this book is well worth the price...and more. [Oh -and this is a hardcover book just for your info]. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
1928 Nobel Prize winner Sigrid Undset is the only Norwegian woman to have been awarded the prestigious prize for literature. Her medieval novels, which follow the lives of common people in the Middle ages in Norway, and her later works that deal with contemporary and social issues, were well received in the United States. "Kristin Lavransdatter" became a best seller, earning a position in the Book of the Month Club-a remarkable feat for a work that centers on a small country in the Middle Ages. There is no biography in English on Sigrid Undset, which makes this annotated bibliography so important. In one chapter, Maman has created a guide to the autobiographical information in Undset's own works. Much of the literature which is included in the bibliography has never before been put together in this kind of format. American reviews of the author's books, grouped by style of novel, internet resources, dissertations, as well as recent studies in Norwegian, comprise this comprehensive look at one of Norway's most important authors. Ideal for English-speaking researchers. ... Read more

... Read more

Product Description
Norway's great Nobel Prize winner here tells the story of her escape from the Nazi invaders of her homeland in 1940; and discusses the world situation as she saw it on her long journey to safety in the United States.

When the year 1940 began Sigrid Undset was fity-eight years old. She was living quietly in her country home in Lillehammer, Norway - writing, thinking, and devoting herself to such quiet charities as sheltering three homeless Finnish children, waifs of the recent Russian war. There she spent most of her time; but occasionally affairs of one sort or another took her to Oslo for short visits.

She was in Oslo, lecturing to a student group, on the fateful night of April 7, when the air-raid sirens shrilled the first news that German invasion had begun. Soon it was plain that there was no safety in Oslo for one who, like the great novelist, had seen her books banned in Hitler's Reich and had spoken out strongly against the new barbarism. With Hans, her younger son who had not reached military age, she made her way by train to Lillehammer. It is the full story of that trip that Madame Undset tells in these pages - a story of the most intense dramatic interest, as vivid and exciting as any novel. But it is true.

Beyond that, Return to the Future is made deeper and more valuable by the author's observations along the way in Sweden, in Russia, and in Japan. Her grave and sensitive mind, digging deep below the surface of what she saw, brings to light the inward reality of those countries and evaluates them in relation to this, the greatest time of crisis which our Western civilization has known in centuries. ...
