5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Book Sigrid Undset Wrote Before Her Tragic Death
This magnificent and rare biography [Catherine of Siena by Sigrid Undset, from Sheed & Ward, 1954 - which was the hardcover first edition] - is important for two reasons. First, it is bar none the best biography ever written on the Saint for its scope, depth, and frankly - heart; something Sigrid Undset was known for in all her works - especially the Nobel prize winning Kristin Lavransdatter. Second, she tragically died of illness a few months following the completion of this manuscript, which one suspects took a great deal out of her to complete. I personally searched for this book for years...and I remain most grateful to Amazon for its staunch and loyal support of these rare, vitally significant, out-of-print classics in all genres. Last, I would hope that a publisher out there would give this book and its author (the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature) - consideration to bring the latter back into print for all. Thoroughly inspirational, engaging with never-before information on the unique and beloved Saint - Catherine of Siena. ... Read more

Excerpt: Sverre Sigurdsson (Old Norse: , c. 1145/1151 9 March 1202) was king of Norway from 1184 to 1202. He married Margareta Eriksdotter, the daughter of the Swedish king Eric the Saint, by whom he had the daughter Kristina Sverresdotter. Many consider him one of the most important rulers in Norwegian history. He assumed power as the leader of the rebel group, the Birkebeiners, during their struggle against King Magnus Erlingsson. After Magnus fell at the Battle of Fimreite in 1184, Sverre ruled as sole king of Norway. Differences with the Church, however, led to his excommunication in 1194. Another civil war began against the church-supported Baglers, which lasted beyond Sverre's death in 1202. The most important historical source on Sverres life is his biography, Sverris saga, in part written while Sverre was alive. This saga is likely biased, since the foreword states that part was written under Sverres direct sponsorship. Correspondence between the Pope and the Norwegian bishops can be used as an alternate source when it comes to church affairs. The saga and the letters mostly agree about the hard facts. Supposedly, King Sverre was short, so he usually directed his troops from horseback during battles. The contrast is great to the traditional Norse warrior ideals where the king was expected to lead his men from the front of the battle line. Sverre was a talented improviser, both in political and military life. His innovative tactics often helped the Birkebeiners against mo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=630781 ... Read more

Excerpt: For the Norwegian Navy class of frigates, see Fridtjof Nansen class frigate. Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (10 October 1861 13 May 1930) was a Norwegian explorer, scientist and diplomat. Nansen was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his work as a League of Nations High Commissioner. Fridtjof Nansen was born at Store Frøen, near Oslo in 1861, the son of a prosperous lawyer. As a young man, he was an expert skater, swimmer and skier, excelling in drawing and sciences at school. He studied Zoology at the University of Oslo. Nansen initially started out as a pioneer sports skier, and soon became interested in Arctic exploration. He led the first crossing of Greenland by ski, and achieved great success with his Arctic expedition aboard Fram. He later became noted as a zoologist and oceanographer, and was a pioneer of the neuron theory. He was also a distinguished diplomat, eventually becoming Commissioner of refugees for the League of Nations. He was married to Eva Nansen (died 1907) and was the father of noted architect and humanist Odd Nansen and the grandfather of Eigil Nansen. Nansen made his first voyage to Greenland waters in a sealing ship in 1882. In 1883 he became inspired to attempt a crossing of Greenland by ski after hearing of Nordenskiöld's expedition of the same year. Nansen's plan was to cross the island from east to west, which would require navigating through an almost impenetrable barrier of pack ice to land a ship on the east coast.
