5-0 out of 5 stars The Passionate Writings of an Artist!
I loved the songs, Luka, and Tom's Diner, by Suzanne Vega but I didn't know there was so much more to her work. She is an artist of words whether through her lyrics or her poetry. She was raised in the urban New York City and you get the feeling about the city while you read her poetry and lyrics for the songs, Luka, and Tom's Diner as well as so many others like Book of Dreams. Suzanne Vega's Luka was about child abuse and Tom's Diner represented an urban experience of hers. I think the book does a fine service in explaining Vega's inspiration and creativity. This book is a must for Vega fans and for anybody interested in Vega's creativity and inspiration. I think this book can be used in schools.

5-0 out of 5 stars slight alterations
Fans of Suzanne Vega will find lyrics to many of her songs in this collection, and will also enjoy reading some of her poetry and other writings. I found it particularly interesting to see how, with slight changes to the language, a theme from a poem or story got worked into a song that I knew well.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must supplement for those who have Suzanne's music and those who consider buying it
Suzanne's art is unique and inspiring. It goes well beyond music. Those who followed her in the last 20 years or so witnessed a long and exciting journey. It was all but obvious for a book to accompany this journey. Suzanne is sharp, clear, fresh and touches every bit of your soul. The books brings you closer to her inner world and creates, together with her music, a wonderful and intimate world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeah..
The best songwriter ever in terms of lyrics.Freakin totally in your face fantasticima, the "Spiritual Bathing" of poetry books.(A plug for that book by Ms.Nadine Epstein.) CrAss had some songs that were also on par with MS.Vega. "Reality Asylum"'s one of them. The best poetry peice ever.If you do not like punk with poetry by "Love Songs" the book with Crass lyrics and "Self Evident" Ani DiFranco's lyric book as well. For these three artists plus Sarah MacLachlan define how we are as women and men and humanity in all of it's beauty and angEr and Joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I really don't know how can I explain this book. It's not really a book it's something more than that, something you always want to carry with you no matter how many times you read it, you want to read again and again. Every poem, story or lyric gain new meanings each time you read. I've always been a big fan of Suzanne Vega's music and now I'm a big fan of her writing too! I wish she wrote more books! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
It's really a shame this book has been out of print for over 10 years; it's an excellent selection of songs from Vega's first two albums, and contains very accurate acoustic guitar tablature. If you ever find it in a used bookstore somewhere, buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent but incomplete
Suzanne Vega is a singer/songwriter from New York. This book is subtitled 'Songs', as it primarily consists of all of the lyrics for Suzanne Vega's published songs up through her third album, 'Days of Open Hand'.There are also artsy photographs, and the book begins with an essay and ends with an interview. If this sounds like a book you would like to read, though, check out Suzanne's later and much more complete collection, 'The Passionate Eye'.

(Suzanne's lyrics are always worth reading, if you are not someone who can pick up all their details listening to her albums...if you haven't heard her songs, you should probably start with her CDs though, as her music is quite lovely as well.) ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Suzanne Nadine Vega (born July 11, 1959) is an American songwriter and singer known for her eclectic folk-inspired music. Two of Vega's songs (both from her second album Solitude Standing, 1987) reached the top 10 of various international chart listings: "Luka" and "Tom's Diner". The latter was originally an a cappella version on Vega's album, which was then remade in 1990 as a dance track produced by the British dance production team DNA. Suzanne's mother, Pat Vega, is a computer systems analyst of German-Swedish heritage. Her father, Richard Peck, is of Scottish-English-Irish extraction. Her stepfather, Ed Vega, also known as Edgardo Vega Yunque, was a writer and teacher from Puerto Rico. ... Read more

Excerpt: Rudolph Joseph Rummel (born October 21, 1932) is professor emeritus of political science at the University of Hawaii. He has spent his career assembling data on collective violence and war with a view toward helping their resolution or elimination. Rummel coined the term democide for murder by government, his research claiming that six times as many people died of democide during the 20th century than in all that century's wars combined. He concludes that democracy is the form of government least likely to kill its citizens and that democracies do not wage war against each other. Rummel is the author of 24 scholarly books, and published his major results in Understanding Conflict and War (197581). He then spent the next fifteen years refining the underlying theory and testing it empirically on new data, against the empirical results of others, and on case studies. Power Kills (1997) sums up Rummel's research. Other works include Lethal Politics: Soviet Genocides and Mass Murders 1917-1987 (1990); China's Bloody Century: Genocide and Mass Murder Since 1900 (1991); Democide: Nazi Genocide and Mass Murder (1992); Death by Government (1994); and Statistics of Democide (1997). Extracts, figures, and tables from the books, including his sources and details regarding the calculations, are available online on his website. Myths and legends form the foundations for all cultures. The Greek and Roman myths were early tales created to explain the world and are now inextricably woven throughout music, art, film, theater, literature, politics and daily life. Thousands of years old, these myths continue to inspire and intrigue, and this audio keeps these stories vibrant with new recordings by an intriguing array of artists including Iggy Pop, George Clinton, Suzanne Vega and others. ...
