4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely art and a clever Persephone
Kris Waldherr, famous for her beautiful artwork as seen in _The Book of Goddesses_ and _The Goddess Tarot_ sets her pen and paintbrush to the legend of Demeter and Persephone, with predictably lovely results. This is a G-rated and relatively gentle retelling of the story in which the young Persephone is taken away to the underworld to be the bride of Hades, god of death, causing her mother's mourning and bringing on winter until a compromise can be reached.I especially liked the fact that Waldherr made Persephone smart rather than passive, thinking up the solution by which she could please both mother and husband. And, like I said, it's relatively gently told. The scene where Hades's chariot bursts up from the earth is a little scary-looking, but Hades turns out to not be a bad guy in the end.A beautiful book for kids who like mythology.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my second book
I use the Goddess Tarot deck each evening and I enter the date and the position of the card drawn. This gives me a wonderful quick reference for my readings and helps me keep track of the flow of the magical and wondrous vibrational energy the readings provide.
I have been a research astrologer for over forty years and use the tarot to double check myself. I also give readings and have come to appreciate the beauty and grace of the Goddess Tarot cards.I am a big fan of Kris' artistic ability.
The workbook provides additional learning props and I am now on my second book. Great Idea! Beverly Helayne Evenson, PhDHolistic Health Sciences

This is great with the deck, excellent aid for any woman seeking to understand herself and her feminity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool For Both Initiates And Elders
I've been reading tarot and runes for about ten years. I have changed decks several times through the years as I mature spiritually. My readings are based more on intuitive skills than the medium/method used. I don't go "By the Book."The deckspeaks to me and will communicate traditional meanings as they apply. The Goddess Tarot resonated withme immediately. I planned to read with this deck at an event a month from the time I acquired it and ordered the workbook to help familiarize myself with the author's intent and interpretation. I like the simplicity of theworkbook. It can beused to learn tarot or thisparticular deck as well as a meditation tool or journal.Thethought-provoking questions prompt inner reflection and can help develop intuitive skills. The reader can do the work in order or as cards come up.I haven't written in my copy because I have a feeling I may want to go through it once a year or so. Highlyrecommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious Goddesses--Expanded Edition!
If you haven't seen the revised and expanded anniversary edition of Waldherr's renowned Book of Goddesses, this is a book you do not want to miss! The new version is packed with gorgeous artwork and informative, empowering text. Waldherr includes both familiar and unusual goddesses within a beautiful framework of multicultural mythos. The book includes both full color portraits as well as halftone illustrations--with additional border illustrations lending to the narratives.

It is well researched and put together. Another particular strong point is the fact that Waldherr includes "related goddesses" at the end of each section. The addition of comparative mythology helps to exemplify the universal nature of the feminine divine and makes this book seem unique in its presentation. The pricepoint almost seems low for this visual masterpiece--as it is a timeless creation that is sure to please generations to come!

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating, delightful, and enriching: a book to treasure

Prepare to be beguiled. This is not an ordinary book.

Finding it was a happy accident while I was researching artistic responses to the myth of Persephone and Demeter. I knew Kris Waldherr had written a children's book about Persephone ('Persephone and the Pomegranate'), but it was out of print and had become a hard-to-find collector's item. So I turned to this more recent book of hers instead, and was captivated by it.

The book is designed as a complete whole, from its richly coloured endpapers with their jewel-like illustrations through to the lovely organic patterns of flowers, leaves, shells, rocks, birds and trees that run along the outer border of every page. Open it anywhere, and you'll see straight away that each double-page spread has been arranged with great care and sensitivity. Pictures are creatively balanced with text in a deeply satisfying way, from the evocative little vignettes inserted among the letterpress that give the words space to breathe, to the large richly coloured full-page illustrations. It doesn't matter if you think you're not interested in goddesses, and you don't have to be a woman to enjoy it; the book is so lovely that it will entice you in. Before you know where you are, you'll be immersed in the world of divine feminine archetypes that Kris Waldherr has laid before you.

This book is a wonderful demonstration of what can be achieved when an author/artist/designer has the inspiration, talent and vision to understand the potential of modern book production techniques, and take full advantage of them. 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful', advised William Morris. The Book of Goddesses fits both criteria, and here's the wonder: anyone can afford to buy one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Celestially life enhancing!
Love everything Kris Waldherr does! Her artistic abilities shine in this loveliest of presentations.A dramatic and heartfelt sense of timing from those whose stories have deeply touched all of our lives through the mediums. It has become my first favorite deck, the second being the Goddesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars no title
I've never been much of a mythology fan, but after bringing this book home from the library to do research on Aphrodite/Venus for a school project, I found myself reading every godess's story over and over again. The paintings are gorgeous and the written part is actually interesting.I never thought Diana, Athena, and Chang O could actually capture my imagination, but they did. Each godess is beautiful and unique in her own way.Kris Waldherr makes them each become the perfect role model for every type of girl.:-) -Willow

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy two -- one for you, one for a friend!
This book is a lovely work of art! A perfect "coffee table" book or as an introduction for young people to different cultures and ways of seeing the world, The Book of Goddesses will open your mind and expand your consciousness. "My house is full of many mansions," and "many roads, one journey," come to mind as a way to describe the concepts that unfold as the beautiful artwork and simple text in two pages describes each goddess, where she is from, and what she represents. We cannot understand the world we live in if we continue to dismiss or minimize the cultures in which it is rooted. This may be a "radical" concept, but it is an important concept to understand.

This book would make a great gift. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Romanticized Tarot
"The Lover's Path Tarot is a tool to examine and improve relationships--whether they be [sic] with yourself, with your beloved, or with the world. Examining our preconceptions about love, the ways we yearn to connect with another, what we desire in a partner, is an act of self-illumination. More importantly, it's one way to take personal responsibility for our lives." - From the Little White Book

According to artist and author Kris Waldherr, relationships mirror our relationship with ourselves, as well as the world at large. In fact, love relationships, she says, can embody our perspective of how the Universe supports and nurtures us.

It is in this spirit that Ms. Waldherr offers The Lover's Path Tarot, a 78-card deck portraying the complex romantic relationships of couples from myth and history. From Cleopatra and Caesar in the Fertility card (Empress) to Romeo and Juliet in Tradition (Hierophant), central themes of devotion, decision, sacrifice and enduring love find expression in the Major Arcana.

The names of each couple are shown within the illustrations of the Majors, and most of the cards have been renamed:

0 Innocence
I Magic
II Wisdom
III Fertility
IV Power
V Tradition
VI Love
VII Desire
VIII Strength
IX Contemplation
X Fortune
XI Justice
XII Sacrifice
XIII Transformation
XIV Balance
XV Temptation
XVI Oppression
XVII Grace
XVIII Illusion
XIX Awakening
XX Judgment
XXI Triumph

The Minor Arcana of The Lover's Path Tarot depicts the progression of a classic love story for each of the four suits:

Cups: Tristan and Isolde - "...lives ruled by extreme emotions such as love, desire, sorrow, yearning and anger."

Staves: Siegfried and Brunnhilde - "...shows how the force of love can spur us to great deeds, making us strong where we were once weak."

Arrows: Cupid and Psyche - "...depicts how love grants wisdom."

Coins: Danae and Zeus - "...depicts the power of the suit of coins to transform lives."

The art, architecture, books and maps of the Italian Renaissance inspired the lovely paintings done by Ms. Waldherr. Using models of friends and associates, the main card art are watercolor underpaintings sealed with acrylic gel medium, with oil paints glazes layered over the top. The decorative borders were painted in gouache on handmade paper.

The 35-page LWB provides upright and reversed meanings for all cards, with brief notations on the correlating myth/history of the couples found on the Majors. Two relationship-oriented spreads are also included.

The two elements I found the most striking in The Lover's Path Tarot is the gorgeous portrayal of the Arrows suit (especially the heart-tipped arrows) and the small elemental painting on the bottom of the Minor cards (e.g. lush leaves for Coins/Earth, starry skies for Arrows/Air and so on.) Another nice touch is a folded pull-out showing five spreads--the "Lover's Path Spreadsheet".

At 4 ¾ x 3 ½ inches, the cards from this deck a more square than most, but although they're wider, smaller hands should have no trouble shuffling the deck (I have small hands and I can shuffle them fine; any bigger, though, and I'd probably have some difficulty). The backs appear fully reversible, but upon closer inspection, the marbling on the background isn't uniform.

I was disappointed to discover that The Lover's Path Tarot did NOT come with a full-size book. Judging by the size and heft of the box, I assumed that this deck came with a companion book. Alas, only a LWB is included in this over-packaged Tarot.

Unfortunately, there is no discussion about the scenes portrayed in the Minor Arcana, which supposedly arise from the components of four specific myths. In addition, Ms. Waldherr doesn't explain why she chose the myths to represent certain Majors (e.g., why Penelope and Odysseus were selected for the Justice card).

Although brief, the upright and reversed meanings in the LWB are surprisingly insightful, for the most part. Although I think The Lover's Path Tarot would be good for relationship readings and perhaps personal meditation, it's not a deck that I would use for reading--especially since I don't resonate with all the romantic drama central to this deck.

However, if you are drawn to dramatic stories of love and loss, and tend to have relationship issues crop up repeatedly in your life, The Lover's Path Tarot may be a great deck for gaining insight. In addition, those who admire Renaissance art will likely want The Lover's Path Tarot as an art deck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lover's Path Review
The packaging is very appealing to me, I like the spread sheet being included, the cards are very good quality in my opinion with the designs appealing to me. The accompanying booklet details the story very well behind the Major Cards & gives a good one of the Minor Cards.Overall I would highly recommend this deck to others but also want to mention that someone totally new to Tarot may find it a bit hard to understand.
I rated this a 5 because I don't find anything about this set that would indicate less mind you the cards are a bit oversized but I don't find it difficult to shuffle them, someone with small hands could.I feel it also important to mention that it will sometime advertise it's hardcover but it is not always hardcover, again I didn't feel this worth rating it less... It's a 5 in my opinion...

4-0 out of 5 stars A delight
I am a compulsive collector of Tarots, and other card-based oracles, to the extent I don't know how many I've got.And of all of them, this is one of my favourites. The images are a delight - they have a lightness and delicacy which is not seen often enought in Goddess/feminist spirituality art, where all too frequently one encounters the tiresome image of the-Goddess-as-ugly-squatting-monster.
I liked the illustrations of less familiar goddesses, and unlike some other reviewers, I don't have a problem with Gwenhwyfar - John and Caitlin Matthews make a case for her as an aspect of the Goddess of Sovreignity, which I find entirely convincing.
The Gooddess Tarot loses one star because I find that I can't really use it for conventional divination; this is a problem I always have with Tarots which play fast and loosewith the traditional imagery. However, it makes an excellent meditation aid, and I have used it in divination by simply drawing a Goddess at random and asking her for advice.
As to people who complain that the cards are too big - I have the pocket edition, with cards the size of ordinary playing cards. (Amazon UK had it in stock the last time I looked.)

4-0 out of 5 stars really beautiful , big cards!
i bought one few months ago and love the
images.but i think for some people, maybe the read of tarot will look more dificult cause these are really big cards.if you look for a diferent tarot deck, with really beautiful paintings, its for you, enjoy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tarot Cards
The Tarot Card set came with a book informing you of each character and minor characters as well. It explained different card layouts with another little book to help interpret what the meaning of each card is. It also comes with a poster to look at for refrence. I think if your just getting into the idea of reading tarot cards this would be the set to start out with. It has all the information needed to get know what your doing. It also goes in depth so you can apply your knowledge and become more advenced with your readings. Since your constantly looking at the meaning of the cards you get know what your talking about pretty quick. It's fun to have around for parties and hanging out. Good times!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
This is one of the best decks available. It's well thought out with beautiful artwork, and that is enough to make it a worthy purchase. But it gets better: this deck resonates very well with women, and I often notice that readings with this deck move women more deeply and powerfully than the same reading with another deck. I believe there is also a workbook for this deck, which I've heard good things about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent deck
This is a beautiful deck. I love how it portrays the goddesses of different regions and focuses the minor arcana on the paths of four specific goddesses (Freya for Wands/Staves, Venus for Cups, Isis for Swords, Lakshmi for Pentacles). One slight complaint that the Venus Cup cards look too Medieval for the Roman goddess of beauty and love, but this is beautifully illustrated and easy to use. One of my favorite decks! :D ...
