5-0 out of 5 stars The Beat Goes On
This is a brilliant double album of poetry by the bigger and some of the lesser known Beat writers - women and men. The readers are either the poets themselves or others who really capture the feeling and the spirit of the work.Ian Dury does Kerouac and Baraka real justice whilst it is always a pleasure to hear the voice of Di Prima reading her own work. All types of Beat poetry is represented. Some you will want to learn by heart! This CD is a real find for Beat fans and followers. Buy it!

Editorial Review

Product Description
This anthology presents material selected from the collection of Angel Hair magazine and books edited by Anne Waldman and Lewis Warsh between 1966 and 1978. Included are substantial sections of writing--in some cases entire books--from an impressive range of poets including Clark Coolidge, Alice Notley, Hannah Weiner, Robert Creeley, Bernadette Mayer, Kenward Elmslie, Tom Clark, Joanne Kyger, Bill Berkson, Ted Greenwald, Lorenzo Thomas, John Wieners, Joe Brainard, Ron Padgett, as well as Waldman and Warsh, among many others. From the nascent St. Mark's Poetry Project on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Bolinas and Boulder, Angel Hair published an idiosyncratic cross-section of innovative writing in distinctive format, becoming one of the longest-lived and most influential publishers on the small press scene. The anthology of literary writings is supplemented with brief memoirs by more than twenty writers, and the book also includes an annotated checklist by Aaron Fischer and Steven Clay that comprises a citation and photograph of each of the approximately eighty books, magazines, broadsides and catalogues issued by the Press. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Out of Print?Out of my Mind!
To Whom It May Concern: Buy this book!Or borrow it your literary neighbor, or steal it from the library; anything, just get you hands on it.Out of This World is a comprehensive lexicon of of the life of theinfamous St. Mark's in the Bowery Poetry Project. From Ginsberg toAshberry, from O'Hara to St. Francis, from the down and dirty free verse ofPaul Beatty and Jim Carroll to the the luminous prose of Mary Montenegro, this book is finger lickin' good. While it is dissappointing at times notto have more that one or two pieces by each poet, it gives you a scope thatfew works do.Elegantly edited and sequenced by Anne Waldman, theproject's long-time director, Out of This World is a five-pound gem worthdodging library security or the wait for an out of print copy.Dig it. ... Product Description

“At Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, there has long been an illuminating, dynamic, ongoing exchange of ideas about the history and legacy of the Beat Generation—an exchange fortunately that has been carefully archived and preserved. This valuable anthology does not further embalm the ‘legend’ of the Beats. Instead it allows its readers to hear authentic voices —Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, John Clellon Holmes, Diane di Prima, Philip Whalen, etc.—as well as introducing the thoughtful and responsible work of leading Beat scholars.”—Joyce Johnson

Amassed from the riches of the Naropa University audio archives, this collection offers an exciting new look at the Beats—whose influence lives on in the art and politics of our time. In this often spontaneous, conversational book, readers are introduced to the hard truths behind being a Beat woman, the haunting accuracy of William Burroughs’s world-view, the passion and energy of Allen Ginsberg and Anne Waldman, Jack Kerouac’s unexpected musicality, Diane DiPrima’s foray into small press publishing, Michael McClure’s account of the famous first reading of “Howl,” and, most of all, the inspirations behind America’s most provocative and prescient thinkers.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Collection of Artistic and Intellectual Genius
This inspiring collection of discussions and lectures by and about some of the giants of the Beat Generation gives credence to their artistic and intellectual genius that sometimes gets overlooked by the hype occasionally associated with the Beats. Culled from the Naropa Audio Archives, Beats at Naropa is an engaging book - one destined to be expanded or have a sequel made as the audio archives continue to be developed, researched, and transcribed. In this regard, Anne Waldman is a visionary - the audio archives being her brainchild. Such an endeavor is a vital record of America's cultural and literary history and when such vitality continues to be recognized, more universities and organizations will follow her lead. ...
