Product Description
"...one of the most exhaustively researched studies of modern Russian history to have appeared in many years...In its searching analysis of the pogrom as a 'social movement' and in its sensitive analysis of the interplay between class tension and ethnic violence the study makes a most valuable contribution" - Stephen A. Smith, University of Essex. Robert Weinberg examines the tumultuous events of the 1905 Revolution in Odessa, the fourth-largest city in the Russian Empire at the turn of the twentieth century, and explores why workers in Odessa were the driving force in the near-toppling of autocratic rule. The book also sheds light on the notorious Jewish Question in tsarist Russia and the impace of ethnic conflict on the events of 1905. Jews constituted one-third of Odessa's population, and the bloody October pogrom that left hundreds dead reveals how ethno-religious tensions affected the labor movement and influenced the outcome of the revolution in Odessa. By demonstrating the intricate relationship among labor unrest, politics, and anti-Semitism, "The Revolution of 1905 in Odessa" enriches our understanding of the multifaceted dimensions of revolution in the Russian Empire. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars depends on your age
Bought this for my fiancé who is very into drumming. He didn't recognize a lot of the names, but my dad (also a drummer) did and thought the book was great. Probably a better read for baby boomer era drummers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Max Weinberg Rocks!
I bought this book after seeing Max live in 1986 with the legendary Dirty Bones Band, a New England cult rock and roll band that used to play all the time at my university. He talked about his favorite drummers, then demonstrated their styles with the band.Even though I don't play (I am not a musician) I really enjoyed reading about some of Rock's great drummers including Ringo and Levon Helm.Buy the book ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I am a NTRP 4-4.5 player who has struggled more than a year to break through to the next level. I have found myself losing matches with the same 'stupid' mistakes. By reading this book and Brad Gilbert's book, I believe that my games are on the way to improve.

Gilbert's book focuses on an analyse of the opponent's game plan and weakness. His book, too long on tales of his matches, short on practical instructions, teaches me to be aware of what the opponents and I are doing. Sounds easy, but difficult to do. I was too focused on chasing, mindlessly hitting the ball and cursing my mistakes to know how and why I won and lost a point.

This book, tells me WHY I was too focused on cursing my mistakes: too much stress. His analysis of the symptoms are dead-on.
A lot of useful tips to deal with anxiety, both during training and during match. It aims to develop 6 skills

-regulating anxiety
-improving concentration
-self talk
-imagery
-building confidence
- motivation through goal setting.

Practical and structural text makes it easy to ready and have an overview.
Overall, the two books have forced me to be much more displined in my thinking during playing. Before: sloppy mental habit of just hitting the balls, negative thoughts triggered by external circumstances: mistakes, pressure.
Now: An internal-driven, disciplined and structured thinking routine, an established routine that I try to use for every point, independent of losing or winning. Using his tips, I would

- slow down after a point, making a mental note what I and my opponent just did, ie. why I just won or lost. This will be incorporated in my future plan.

- walk around looking at my racket focusing on positive self-talk and monitoring of any anxiety symptoms building up.

- review my strategy for the next point and imagine how it will play out. For example, if I will serve, where I will place the ball and how my serve stroke will 'feel' like.

- watch the seams of the ball and its path during the point to focus my attention, consciously coil the body then hit/snap though the ball with good folllow-through, instead of mindless hitting the ball. It prevents me to rush through the stroke and gives me a fluid movement.

Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, Timeless Book
This book turned my game around.Previously, I found myself losing closematches, doubting my abilities and walking into tennis matches sometimesfeeling intimidated. This book showed me not only how this negativityhurts my game, but more importantly, how to turn this negative thinking topositive and to build my confidence. Now I am winning these matches andwalking in with fire in my heart to beat my opponent. The only slightcriticism I have is that the author can be a bit wordy and spends alot oftime explaining why a concept is important before he shows how to implementit.Overall I would say that is book is a Must Buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gave me back control over my mental game.
As an intermediate level club player I have found myself losing matches that I should have won.I knew that my mind was playing against me,but I wasn't sure what to do.This book gave me exercises to improve my level ofconcentration as well as hints to improve my self confidence. As I readthis book I wondered how the author knew so much about my game.It feelsgreat to walk on the court and have something in my mental "file"when the going gets rough. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but with a few issues
I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but there were a couple of things about it that sort of irked me.For example, there are several places where the editor let grammar or spelling errors through, and like the other books in this trilogy, Weinburg likes to *make sure* that you know what someone looks like. But, I still enjoyed this book, and the trilogy in general.Oh, and in case it matters to anyone, the pages are quite thin, and sometimes the ink on the pages will smudge a bit (not to the point of unreadability), which made me change the way I held it open.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the good stuff
This book keeps you on the edge of your seat and never lets you go. I recommendthis book for anyone who wants to know how to write a mystery and for anyone who loves horror stories. I loved this book and aspire to write such a compelling story one day. Butjust remember start with the 1st novel. That one will have you tearing at your eyes to read the second!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I actually recieved this book when I was eleven to read as we traveled (uugh) cross country by car.Needless to say it is an excellent book.i haven't read the first book but now i absolutely have to get the third. while leaving mysteries it also had a quality you don't find in normalchapter books.when your done with a regular book and long to know morethere is no way to do so.with these you need only oick up the next bookuntil your curiosity is satified.this is a great book and hope you allwill enjoy it as much as i have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book, with secrets and plots everywere, has it should be, with Cainites. The secrets that Dire has, even those not known by himself, keep you thinking, and trembling.Great book of a great trilogy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Suffers from "middle-book-itis".
The first book of the "Masquerade of the Red Death" trilogy, "Blood War", was a well-written, fast paced, interesting novel with one flaw: It had no ending. This is a common flaw in trilogies ormulti-book series; even if the main plot will carry from one book to thenext, ideally, some major subplot should be begun and ended in each book,or at the very least there should be an ending of each individual book at areasonable "break point."

This book did not suffer from this asbadly as I expected it to; it did not feel like it had no beginning, inspite of the fact that it was a continuation of "Blood War". Andwhile it had no true ending, the cutoff point was more reasonable than thatin the first book.

Still, I cannot rate this book, on its own, higherthan a three, because it is not a complete story on its own. The series asa whole may wind up with a higher rating than that, but as an individualbook, this is simply a story fragment.

It's a well-written andinteresting story fragment, but a story fragment nonetheless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ...i dare you to put this book down...c'mon, i double-dare you...
Every generation, a dread auction is held at a secret place that only those especially invited may reach. It is always held by the same man, simply known as Ashmedai. For centuries, countless witches and warlocks have vied in vicious bidding wars with one another to attain the auction's mysterious prize. No one knows what this prize is, only that it contains immeasurable power and thus is worthy of bloody contention. Rumors whisper of unfathomable danger and death and a fate worse than death - that, of those who choose to participate in this auction, no one ever ever returns...

Valerie Lancaster goes looking for help from history professor Alex Warner, who was a friend much held in esteem by her father. Valerie's father was recently murdered and the daughter wants certain questions answered and seeks a redressing. But things get even more muddled. Jake Lancaster, Valerie's dad, was a capable true mage and was brutally slain in order to obtain an object he had received - an Invitation to a legendary auction, whose location can only be determined in the presence of said Invitation. It seems the only way to uncover Jake Lancaster's murderer is to go to the auction. Alex Warner, along with Valerie (who herself is a nonpracticing sorceress), is sucked into the sinister world of the occult, where magic is terrifyingly real. Their journey to find the whereabouts of Ashmedai is unendingly fraught with attacks by werewolves, golems and powerful black sorcery. But, as it turns out, getting to Ashmedai's auction is the easy part. Alex and Valerie will undergo ultimate peril when they at last come face to face with the true nature of the auction's prize...

The Devil's Auction is definitely somewhere in my top twenty all-time favorite books. Robert Weinberg weaves a harrowing tale of horror, fantasy, and exhilarating high adventure. There are hairbreath escapes, old-fashioned romance, heroic derrings-do (mostly perpetrated by the intrepid Alex Warner, who seems to be an updated version of Indiana Jones) and nasty supernatural creatures, all of whom are intent on causing irreparable, not-covered-by-insurance damage unto our duo.Weinberg has lots of sadistic fun here, constantly throwing his two leads into dire jeopardy after jeopardy. The result is a wild, adrenalin-rushed occult thriller, a story that rarely pauses to take in oxygen. Man alive, I just love this book. From start to finish, there isn't a word, sentence or passage that rings false. You sink into the pages (to quote Rakim) like you were ink. The closing pages offer up a very nice reveal, providing a nice dessert to what has been a sumptuous feast of a novel.

If I could, I'd give this horror story more than five stars. I highly, highly recommend it. And, fellow reader, once you've inhaled The Devil's Auction, do yourself a favor and go get the sequel The Armageddon Box, to see what else Weinberg can do to torture his characters, all the while in good, clean fun, I'm sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magic and Intrigue
Full of death, magic, and romance, Robert Weinberg made a masterpeice when he wrote this novel.I kept finding myself caught up in this book, having to force myself to put it down.Mr. Weinberg must have done his researchwhen he wrote this book, there is just enough fact to make the fiction seemalmost real. And with a twist ending, this book keeps you guessing to thevery last sentence.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!
I hagve to admit, I was skeptical at first about how good this book would be.I was greatly surprized when I couldn't put it down.Throughout the book you are given hints to the Auction's purpose, but not until the last page are you told who is offering the untold talisman. An excelentaddition to any library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Self extracting fantasy at its best
Weinbergs "The Devils Auction" is one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read. Excellent, logical and breath taking adventure. The idea of Auction itself is very interesting, not to mention the Devils one (Witchesand Warlocks included). I even like the cover. Go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Devil's Auction

2-0 out of 5 stars Horribly organized and written but quite informational
Perhaps I'm not being fair on discussing how this book is being organized since so many of the ideas overlap so heavily... Nonetheless, this book seems to have almost no logical organization. Sometimes, when I'm reading a chapter, I'll feel like I'm reading something straight out of the last chapter. Not to mention the hierarchy within a chapter is chaotic at best. The use of the same size, same bold font for every heading makes it feel more like a poorly made wikipedia page on the topic than a logical chapter presenting the information. For god's sakes, change the font to reflect the hierarchy of the chapter. I've never seen a textbook fail to do so so miserably.

On top of this, it often feels like the authors just "threw" as much information in on a given topic as they could. Reading the little bullet points every few pages seems to almost conflict with some of the things mentioned in the book.

All in all, this is a VERY frustrating book to read and if you aren't somewhat interested in the topic already, it will not be an easy read. I have never used a worse textbook in my studies and I am in my second year of university, having taken psychology and exercise physiology courses with a lot in common with the course I use this for now.

If there's a way to avoid using this book (note to professors), please spare your class. You might understand it fairly well but students with less knowledge in the field will find it ridiculously boring and overwhelming.

Product Description
In January 1931, Mary M. Leder, an American teenager attending high school in Santa Monica, California, emigrated with the family to Birobidzhan, an area designated by the USSR as a Jewish socialist homeland. By year's end, she was living in a Moscow commune and learning a trade in a factory. My Life in Stalinist Russia chronicles Mary's experiences for the next 34 years, through the First Five Year Plan, the Great Terror, World War II, the Soviet occupation and the Cold War. Her remarkable story provides an extraordinary window into everyday life and culture in the Stalin era. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This fantastic book deserves a wider audience.
I found Mary's book hard to put down, and not because I too am Jewish and my Mother's name is Mary.

I really hope some of my progressive Jewish friends read it.It reads so well and is a very deep look into the sickness of the Russian soul and the dreary brutality and horrible corruption which accompanies all collectivism and redistribution.

Please read this before you vote for another Democrat.

5-0 out of 5 stars History Live
Mary is taking you to the Stalin era... in imagination I lived her life while reading the book..When I went to Moscow it felt as if I have already been there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very humane and honest
A great account of how people lived in the Soviet Union during Stalin's rule. The advantage of this book is that it gives you the facts in such a way that it is up to you to decide whether or not the author is right in her conclusions. I strongly recommend this book for both academic and private reading for I believe it is one of the most unique books ever written about the lifes of regular Soviet citizens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and Informative
Although I have read a number of books on the Soviet Union, much to my surprise, I found myself totally absorbed by Mary Leder's odyssey. Starting with her travels across the US, and thence to Birobidzhan (Siberia), later asked to spy and, of course, spied upon, I believe Ms. Leder spins an eloquent and gripping tale. From Mary the dedicated communist to Mary the disenchanted one, from Mary the factory worker to Mary the editor-translator, she paints a totally honest and courageous picture of herself and her travails and those of so many of her fellow citizens. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

Product Description
Anime, the name given to Japanese superhero animation, has swept the United States. More than two dozen Japanese cartoon series already appear on U.S. television, with more on the way. And with the vast leaps being made in animation technology, the anime explosion shows no sign of abating.

One of the main topics of anime is advanced technology and how it will affect the human race. Movies like Akira have touched upon the power of the atom and the advances and tragedies nuclear power will bring to the Earth. Stories like Ghost in the Shell explore the limits of human and machine interface and artificial intelligence. More than any other genre in the entertainment field, anime explores the future of science and technology, and The Science of Anime provides a fascinating and fun look at the science behind it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I think you have to have an actual interest in science to enjoy this book
The first chapter discusses the origins of anime.During the chapter, the authors talk about the birth of comics and anime, Osamu Tezuka, the history of anime from the beginning to current time.

The second chapter delves into mecha, and it covers giant robots, the history and evolution of mecha in anime, some of the shows that use mecha, as well as some of the other elements associated with mecha.Chapter three goes into artificial intelligence, talking about the shows and the science of artificial intelligence. The fourth chapter goes into colonies in space, and it focuses very heavily on the Gundam universe. The chapter also delves into the science and theories surrounding space colonies.

Chapter five talks about cyberpunk and cyber-terrorism.The sixth chapter talks about evolution and how it is featured in anime. It focuses heavily on Neon Genesis Evangelion and Akira, and then goes into a discussion of evolution and creationism. This is then followed by a discussion about Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Gaia theory.

Chapter seven goes into a discussion about parallel universes, and it goes into an in-depth analysis of the science that goes into parallel universes. The eighth chapter talks about virtual reality. It focuses on .hack//SIGN, and talks about some of the uses for virtual reality in the real world. The final chapter discusses how the science in anime is plausible but illogical.

The concept behind The Science of Anime is an interesting one, but the execution isn't quite what I was anticipating. The authors obviously have a lot of scientific knowledge, but unfortunately, they really didn't seem to try hard to write a little more in "layman's terms."One of the best examples of this issue appears in the chapter about the space colonies. In one section of the chapter, the authors go into great detail about the math involved, and even break down the math equations and the steps of the equations. While someone with a genuine interest in math and science might find this interesting, I found it to be rather dry reading.

The Science of Anime isn't a bad book, but it's not a book I can recommend to be in a basic reference library of an anime fan.Personally, I think you would have to have a genuine interest in science in order to get the most out of this book.

In order to write this review, I checked out a copy of this book through the King County Library System.

Like another reviewer, I bought this text on a lark.I also think, after researching the authors, that this book was written on a lark.I have read less than a third of The Science of Anime and I am already getting tired to being perpetually irritated with the authors for their half-witted research. This book does entertain and inform and, in a sense, their research is sound. However, for some of the mega franchises reviewed, like Mobile Suit Gundam and Macross, there are enormous amounts of previously printed and web-based material readily available for a teenage fan, let alone two professional authors trying to write a scientific guide.

Gundam: The Official Guide

On a completely different level, the writing style of the authors is so dismal and uninspired that the hugely controversial intellectual propery lawsuits between the Japanese studios (created Macross, Mospeda, and Southern Cross) and Harmony Gold (which took said products and fused them into the continuity nightmare that is Robotech) is described:

"The American version of 'Macross' somehow got merged with two other anime series, 'Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross' and 'Genesis Climber Mospeda.' Literally merged.Scenese were actually spliced together from the original three series. This new 'Macross' transformed itself into a phenomenon called 'Robotech.'"

I get that this book is purely fan service, designed to garner sales by people who think it would be very cool to have a "scientific text" that legitimizes the Minovski Particle, O'Neill cylinders, and transforming mecha, but, COME ON! Even the most uninformed person, fan of anime or no, would find it slightly odd that in a book about Japanese cartoons, hardly any of the characters are referred to by their Japanese names, but intead their Americanized names created by ignorant studio execs who are importing a product.

The American anime industry changed dramatically five years before publication of this book.A dynamic shift occurred, offering to maintain a certain level of originality in imported anime and manga simply because nobody wanted to hear about a giant robot pilot named Jack Slash (or whatever cheap name you can think of). It's too bad to see that the writers of this book, who are clearly oblivious to anime in America as it is, didn't do a litte more research.

Do yourself a favor here.If you're going to buy the book, fine. But don't be surprised if you're posting it on the Amazon Marketplace within a weekend. You'd be better off buying directly from the Amazon Marketplace, that way the authors won't get a cut for the resale of their garbage text.

We don't want to encourage them, after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
It is not a dull science text or simply an anime review book. It's a combination of both that entertains and informs.I bought it on a lark and I LOVE it.If you have ever wondered questions about mecha and such, this is a great place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Science of Anime: Mecha-Noids and AI-Super-Bots
An invaluable resource for an historical revelation of the background and comparisons of Anime (Japanese Science Fiction graphic novels and films) and our own Comics (US Superhero & Sci-Fi graphics novels and films), but revealing the depths of Japanese Sci-Fi Anime and their influence on Japanese culture with historical and fantasy references.

I enjoyed reading this book, as I am very interested in Anime, and have been since I was small.Outlining AstroBoy, Gigantor, and others, this book timelines the entire robot anime genre and the books, films and tv shows that have influenced our own culture.

A great find at any price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definately something different
OK so this book is basically a diary.Right down to the key that is needed to open the book.It has lovely illustrations by the "autor", a bartender who is slowly sinking into a dark world that very well may take his soul.He works at a goth club and a few of the patrons (and owners) wind up being actual vampires. The only downside is that this is written as a diary in the first person perspective so when the main charecter goes off to what would be the finale, he just leaves and you're left hangin wondering what happened in the end.Definately recommended.I've had this book for at least 10 years now and have yet to read another like it.I don't even know if there was a sequal. If not it definately deserved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Genius
I ordered this small gem on a whim. The idea of having to open a book with a key, allowing the reader to interact with the story from the beginning, caught my attention. Okay, I'll buy and try, I thought. Well, when I received it, opened it with one of the two keys that came along, and began reading, I was hooked. The Vampire Diary is exactly that... a diary! The pages are all "handwritten" jottings, notes, screams, and drawings. I could not put it down until I finished it. The length is short, immensely readable, andimmensurably mesmerizing. Absolute genius, and 10x worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Work
I bought Vampire Diary on a whim, but it has become my favorite of anyvampire book.It really shows you what it must feel like to watch yourselfslip into complete madness and become an uncontrollable animal.Thewriting and pictures are great, and the book itself helps to add to thepersonna of the story. It makes you feel like you're really reading adiary of someone as they turned to the darkness.I loved it. ... Product Description

The witches who populate these 100 delightfully scary stories include practitioners of white witchcraft and devotees of black magic. Most are female, some are male, and a few are thoroughly unclassifiable. They can be born witches or made witches, and may mix simple love potions or volatile concoctions that threaten all we hold dear. Some resent not receiving the treatment they feel they deserve from lesser mortals; yet other witches don't even realize that they wield any special influence at all. The many writers who take on this ever-fascinating character (so fundamentally human unlike her more paranormal, ghostly brethren) include Juleen Brantingham ("Burning in the Light"), Joe R. Landsdale ("By the Hair of the Head"), Simon McCaffery ("Blood Mary"), Terry Campbell ("Retrocurses"), Lawrence Shimel ("Coming Out of the Broom Closet"), and a coven of others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad, most good
I bought the book on sale and I'm very glad to own it. It does have A LOT of stories, so there's something for everyone. There are a few stories that I didn't like, but I enjoyed almost all of them, which is really something. I'm picky, and putting almost a hundred stories that I like in one book is quite a feat.

The stories are all very different from each other. Some a funny, some are frightening, and some are very dramatic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creepy witch stories!
This book sounds like it is going to be really cheesy, but it is really great! This book is so good, that I almost bought this book at well known books store, and (I never buy books!).But, I was lucky enough to find this at the library.A lot of the stories are creepy, and almost seem believable! The stories are so well written that you can picture things clearly as you read them. I have read a few stories, and they don't all seem to deal with black magic or the devil. They are just creepy like I stated above. This is a fun book to read around Halloween! The cover alone seems creepy and "Halloweenish". If you have ever wished that you could know a real life witch, like I have then this book is def. for you!Grandma Grunt is defiantely one of the creepies stories that I have ever read! This book is probably ok for kids twelve and over, but I think it would really scare younger kids. If you like good Horror stories, don't pass this one up!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection !
100 Wicked Little Witch Stories is a wonderful collection of short stories covering every kind of witch.I love this book and have gone back to it many times because it has such variety.Within this book you will findstories that are funny, loveable, charming, and ones that are downrightscary.(The kind that keep you up at night!)All in all, this book is amust have for anyone who enjoys witchcraft folklore. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great sequel!
This was a fantastic sequel to the Devil's Auction.I wish the author would have continued with these characters in another series.Positvely captivating from the first chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars come guess what's in the puzzle box
There exists in the world a puzzle box, a rare 1500-year-old relic purported to be imbued with wondrous powers. Whosoever possesses this relic is ensured of ultimate glory and mastery over men.Decades ago, the box was stolen away from the vaults of the Vatican. Now, with unholy hunger for this relic further blackening the hearts of the forces of darkness, the hunt for the Armageddon Box grows ever more desperate and dire...

Here is the electrifying sequel to The Devil's Auction. The Armageddon Box reintroduces the reader to history professor and ex-Special Forces vet Alex Warner and sorceress-in-training Valerie Lancaster. In this go-around, Alex meets with his old friend Howie Rosenberg, who regales Alex with a horrific World War 2 vampire encounter and then asks for his aid.But Howie is killed mere moments later in a hail of automatic gunfire, leaving Alex once more in the lurch and dangerously immersed in uncanny ongoing events. Faced with a murderous religious sect,thousands-year-old vampires and a neo-Nazi master sorcerer, the professor must dig deep and call on his combat experience and scholarly intellect to weed out his enemies and solve the enigma of the much-coveted ancient relic.

But Alex is not alone. Joining him in the trenches once again is ex-fashion model Valerie Lancaster (now his wife), who is well on her way to becoming a powerful sorceress. Help also comes from their good friend Makoto Tsuiki, owner/master chef of the restaurant Mama Mia's and a pretty darn good mage (he's giving Valerie magic lessons). Their adversaries are the secret religious order, the Circumcellions, and the enigmatic sorcerer Dietrich Vril (he sweats a lot), who commands the Very Old Folk (other-worldly vampires) and is implacable in his relentless decades-long pursuit of the Armageddon Box.

While not equal to the Devil's Auction, this is still a slam-bang horror thriller and most definitely not to be missed. Weinberg once again puts Alex and Valerie Warner through the wringer. This time, the calm but deadly Makoto Tsuiki, a very intriguing zen-like character, is more involved in the action (he only showed up in brief spurts in the Devil's Auction), and this is good news for the Warner couple and for humanity. This novel's plot heavily involves the early WW2 Nazi movement and its pertinent personages, and Hanns Heinz Ewers' 1911 novel Alraune plays a key role. Weinberg also delves into bits of history of the Catholic Church (specifically the Donatist movement, to give background to the Circumcellions - who actually existed). Honestly, I did find those particular passages pretty dry going. Nevertheless, when Weinberg isn't giving the reader a quick history lesson, it's a captivating, thrill-a-minute reading experience.

I think the reason I relish this book and the Devil's Auction so much is that the author pits an ordinary man against powerful fantastical foes and has that man vanquish them using non-magical means. Alex Warner is well on his way to becoming the Batman of the horror genre. So hop on this wild four-star ride - it's rife with deadly peril, great adventure and sorcery of the darkest ilk. It's always a good thing when the good professor is buried up to his neck in occult doings.
