Product Description
In their latest book, the Searses bring the reason and common sense of their philosophy of parenting to the hurdles of raising the older child. Attachment parenting is not just for babies; as children grow, they need to expand the web of their secure attachments to friends, teachers, community and the wider world. As there is no single plan for any one family, the Searses show a range of ways a parent can retain a child's trust and wield a positive influence as their child matures. By following the advice laid out in this book, parents can see that the bonds they have nurtured since infancy will provide the anchor that will ground their children through the challenging teen years to adulthood.Amazon.com Review
Just what does it take to raise a responsible, compassionate child in a society whose overbearing media celebrates and encourages violence, promiscuity, and gluttonous materialism? Dr. William Sears and his wife, Martha, a nurse, understand that instilling a moral code in one's children is among the most daunting, yet vital, of all parenting tasks. In The Successful Child, they've marvelously distilled 34 years' experience parenting their eight children and treating thousands of kids in their pediatric office--along with facts from recent scientific studies--into this collection of constructive, reassuring guidelines for nurturing children into healthy, well-adjusted young adults.

As Dr. Sears told his children, "Your success in life ... will not be measured by the money you make or the degrees you earn, but rather by the number of persons whose lives are better because of what you did." To that end, Sears advocates what he has coined "attachment parenting," or AP, the practice of listening to your parenting instincts and being sensitive to your baby's needs (such as by quickly responding to cries; by breastfeeding on cue, not bottle-feeding on a schedule; and by co-sleeping). By having his needs met immediately, Sears says the child learns to trust adults, and he in turn mirrors this behavior by acting sensitively to the needs of others later on.

Sears says, "It's never too late to try the AP approach with a child," but The Successful Child definitely will be most useful to parents who've raised their child according to AP guidelines through infancy and toddlerhood. Those who haven't may shudder when Sears writes that the developmental stage from birth to one year most influences a child's future success "because that's when caregivers leave the most lasting impressions on a child's brain." Nevertheless, the Searses have packed in a plethora of sensible tips here for all parents, including 16 ways to teach children how to make wise choices, 12 strategies for guiding spiritual development, seven questions to ponder when a teen wants to start working part-time, and a dozen ways to boost your child's intellectual abilities, such as by offering a diet high in brain-building omega-3 fatty acids. But the most important thing parents can do for their kids, the Searses say, is to hold high expectations: "Let her know that you expect her to do her best, no less and no more, and that you will love her no matter what." --Erica Jorgensen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Raising a child
Becoming a mother has made me remind my childhood, all the goods and bads. All those special moments I won't forget, and all those other moments I'd prefer not remembering. It has made me relive the past to see why I am the way I am. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to be who I am, but I could've turned out better!!!

This amazing book tells you how children are affected, positively or negatively, with the behavior of their parents and their surroundings. With this book, I am finally understanding why, for example, I like to study, why I don't like to hug people, or why I didn't really obey my parents, etc. With astonishing simplicity it explains it all. I'm so grateful I could read this book now that my baby's small, so I can do everything that's in my hands (and in my husbands too) to help her turn out well and be a successful child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book
Great book for all us parents who do not like the "cry-it-out" method!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I really am enjoying this book by Martha Sears, just as I have the other Sears books. What a wonderful way to help encourage our children to become the most successful people they can be!

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, but don't believe everything you read
I love and agree with a LOT of what the authors have to say in "The Successful Child". However, the authors really push the idea that a baby must be breastfed and carried in a sling 24/7 in order to be "connected" to his or her parents. I don't buy that. I don't practice what the authors call Attachment Parenting, and my son and I are extremely connected.

One other thing that bothers me about the book is that in some of the stories it is so obvious that the author is lying. Many of the anecdotes are clearly made up. For example, in one of his anecdotes Dr. Sears is talking about how he was watching a couple and their toddler son in his office waiting room one day, and he watched them long enough to be able to tell that they were excellent parents, and went over to tell them such and have a conversation with them about their parenting. How many doctors do you know who have time to sit in the waiting room watching patients who are waiting to see them, and carry out conversations? NONE. If I had been in a waiting room for a while, and I caught the doctor I was paying to see standing around IN THE WAITING ROOM watching instead of taking care of appointments, I would be very upset and would probably never visit there again. This is just one example of instances in which I think the authors are flat-out lying.

Most of what's in this book (aside from the repetetive AP talk, which gets old quick) is advice on how to practice positive parenting. If that is what you're interested in, then definitely give it a try. I checked this book out from the library but will probably buy it because there are a lot of ideas and methods in it that I don't want to forget, and that I have used on my son since reading it. I especially like the sections on sexuality, communication, and compassion.

5-0 out of 5 stars naturally disciplining
I am from India and I ama product of attatchment parenting(almost all Indians are)...I now have a 2 month old baby girl...I agree with every aspect of Dr Sears philosophy about parenting.....As a kid, teenager and then a youth,I have always felt considering my parents' opinion before taking important decisions. It is true that I have not done many things I wanted to bcoz of fear of hurting my parents' feelings..looking back,I don't feel my freedom or independence was questioned in those times. In fact, they turned out to be good for me.But still,I disagree with my mom's opinions on almost anything and I have my own ways too.I believe attatchment parenting is what is natural and that is how to raise caring, sensitive children who havemoral values and will strive towards the bettering of the world they live in. ... Martha Cleveland describes the ways in which chronic illness or disability often locks us into spirals of emotional pain that steal energy and limit spiritual growth. Cleveland turned to the Twelve Steps for support during almost two decades of living with a rare, recurring medical condition that defied her doctor's diagnosis for much of that time. Drawing on the Twelve Steps, Ms. Cleveland reveals how chronic illness offeres a significant opportunity for spiritual growth that will lead to acceptance, serenity, and fulfilment.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is out of date.
This book is very interesting. I did not realize how old it is until I tried to find an auger. It has been over 12 years since the company listed sold those and they don't remember who the vendor was. Of course, the prices listed are out dated also! It seems like a good home project but make sure you can find the necessary tools, parts, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, but Effective
As a few others have mentioned, this book IS simplistic - but - it is a good introduction to the subject of digging your own well.

For those concerned that "Digging a well is much too complicated!" - this book will help dispel many of those concerns. Once a beginner reads through this book, they can decide if they want to read and do more, or give up on the project.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars because it does what it says. If you want a detailed tome covering all of the minutia of digging a well, this book is not for you. BUT - if you're looking for an *introduction* into the topic. One you can read in a short amount of time to "get your feet wet" so to speak, then this book is a good start.

A good entry-level book. If you already know the basics, move on. If you're a complete greenhorn, this is a good, non-intimidating primer on the topic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basics, and a bit myopic
This book is for shallow wells and although it does show you how to produce a working, safe well, it doesn't go into any other methods or types of wells. If you live in an area with a high water table then this method for this type of well is sufficient, but if you have other needs you'll need to find better information than this book can deliver.

3-0 out of 5 stars Within reach.
This book is really written for the lay person. I have no need for a well but I will not get rid of the book. I can forsee the need for a future well and the cost savings and advice inside these pages is priceless. Without hands-on experience at first it seems daunting of a task to dig your own well; however, the writter makes it readable, understandable, and down right appealing to begin the workout. Not knowing how deep the water level is can be frustating. I live in a area where the water table can be twice the depth talked about in the book. This poses a problem but I am still willing to try someday. I will have confidence in the effort of well digging in the future with this book on my shelf and available when I need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drilling your own Well

Very helpful book for the person wanting to know how to drill shallow (25 foot well). However, I think it could have had more details, especially about the type of well screen, and more about developing the well.
Also, the method he describes, digging with an Auger, did not work very well in my sand/clay. I find it much easier to dig as far down as possible with Auger, then drive it down with a metal drivepoint. Also remember that you must have a very low water table for this to work. ... Read more

Funny and moving, Definitely Not Martha Stewart is one woman’s story about starting over after 20 years of marriage. With wry humor and down-to-earth candor, author Janice Wells struggles through the real world of little money and no time or desire to take care of necessary tasks like fluting mushroom caps and monogramming a door mat. From the realities of moving (“I finally found my martini glass, wrapped in swaddling underwear and lying in a roaster”) to household tips (“to loosen a rusty bolt, soak a rag in Coke, wrap it around the bolt, add the rest to a couple of ounces of rum, drink slowly, then try the bolt”) to frank confessions (“thinking about how long it’s been since you cleaned the tub can take the joy right out of a bubble bath”), Definitely Not Martha Stewart strikes a chord with non–Martha Stewart types everywhere.
