Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Saxon Shore is a 1998 novel by Canadian writer Jack Whyte chronicling Caius Merlyn Britannicus's effort to return the baby Arthur to the colony of Camulod and the political events surrounding this. The book is a portrayal of the Arthurian Legend set against the backdrop of Post-Roman Briton's invasion by Germanic peoples. It is part of the Camulod Chronicles, which attempts to explain the origins of the Arthurian legends against the backdrop of a historical setting. This is a deviation from other modern depictions of King Arthur such as Once and Future King and the Avalon series which rely much more on mystical and magical elements and less on the historical . The Preface explains this style as Merlyn writing his memoir of how he met Arthur and came to raise him. CornwallSaxon Shore begins with Merlyn and the child Arthur stranded in a small boat on the southern most extreme of the Irish Sea. An Irish pirate ship captained by Connor, a prince of Eire, captures the boat. Merlyn kills one of the pirates as he boards the ship but he is knocked down. The Celts then throw the child overboard because of Merlyn's disobedience. Disregarding his life, he jumps after the child swimming after Arthur and gains hold of him. The pirates recapture Merlyn and the floating child and return them to the ship. The captain greets Merlyn and the child, revealing the origin of the crew, Eire, and tries to understand the reasons why Merlyn would sacrifice his life for the child. In the conversation, the captain comes to realize that his brother, Donuil is Merly...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22394370 ... Read more

Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Thomas Bertram Costain (May 8, 1885 - October 8, 1965) was a Canadian journalist who became a best-selling author of historical novels at the age of 57. Costain was born in Brantford, Ontario to John Herbert Costain and Mary Schultz. He attended high school there as well as the Brantford Collegiate Institute. Before graduating from high school he had written four novels, one of which was a 70,000 word romance about Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. These early novels were all rejected by publishers. His first writing success came in 1902 when the Brantford Courier accepted a mystery story from him, and he became a reporter there (for five dollars a week). He was an editor at the Guelph Daily Mercury between 1908 and 1910. He married Ida Randolph Spragge (1888-1975) in York, Ontario on January 12, 1910. The couple had two children, Molly (Mrs. Howard Haycraft) and Dora (Mrs. Henry Darlington Steinmetz). Also in 1910, Costain joined the Maclean Publishing Group where he edited three trade journals. Beginning in 1914, he was a staff writer for and, from 1917, editor of Toronto-based Maclean's magazine. His success there brought him to the attention of The Saturday Evening Post in New York City where he was fiction editor for fourteen years. In 1920 he became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He also worked for Doubleday Books as an editor 1939-1946. He was the head of 20th Century Foxs bureau of literary development (story department) from 1934 to 1942. In 1940, he wrote four short novels but was enough of an editor not to send them out. He next planned t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=87593 ... Read more

He has been awarded a total of 12 Michelin Stars, and in 2001 became one of only three chefs in the United Kingdom to hold three Michelin stars at one time. Ramsay ranks in terms of Michelin Stars behind Joël Robuchon and Alain Ducasse. Ramsay is known for presenting TV programmes about competitive cookery and food, such as Hell's Kitchen, The F Word and Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Ramsay's father was, at various times, a swimming pool manager, a welder, and a shopkeeper, and his mother and sister were nurses. Ramsay has described his early life as "hopelessly itinerant", as his family moved constantly due to the aspirations and failures of his father. In 1976, they finally settled in Stratford-upon-Avon where he grew up in the Bishopton area of the town. In past public interviews, Ramsay has declined to describe his father as an alcoholic; however, his autobiography, Humble Pie, describes his...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=636344 ... Read more

Product Description
Well-known Canadian artist Jack Whyte has been creating art based on Manitoulin Island for over 6 decades. This Sketch Book presents a collection of his Island sketches, covering a myriad of techniques: pencil, pen, lino print, digital art, etc... and subjects: landscapes, lost buildings, local flora, First Nations dancers and much, much more...

In Jack's own words:

I have been sketching images of The Island since the late 1940`s - This book is a selection of these drawings - Over the years it seems that each of them has somehow been used in creating a finished piece of art - in mediums such asoil and acrylic paintings - paper collagesilk screens - stained glass - prints and illustrations - As I compiled this collection it became evident that many of these subjects were either gone or going - As the past disappears contemporary shapes are giving the island a new look and I wonder - Which - will be the last barn standing? ...
