5-0 out of 5 stars An AMAZING COLLECTION of Author Interviews!
David Boyer has collected interviews from some of the most amazing fiction writers in the world today, and I say that with all sincerity as I know a lot of these and am familiar with their work. I love the diversity of the interviews too--he asks questions that are apropos to the individual author, so no two interviews are alike. It's a real bonus that Boyer took the time to include really nice, large photographs of each author. He also allows plenty of wiggle room for the authors to be humorous or serious or downright silly--according to their personal style of writing. It's little touches like these that keep the book from being too dry, and shows you the professionalism and dedication to his work this author/editor has.

Bravo David! Well done!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great interviews, lousy formatting
The interviews in this e-book are great, many of the better "Christian" fiction-thriller writers out there, Eric Wilson, Robin Parrish, Anne Rice, Tim Powers, etc...

But the formatting makes it nearly impossible to read! The interview questions are italicized and all run into each other so you can barely read it and the titles of each section are so badly done, it's hard to tell what the title is, because some words are repeated and some aren't. ... Read more

IT BEGAN WITH ONE ABUSED CHILD . . .

A Little Girl's Terror:

By April of 1987, nine-year-old Mary Ellen Wilson had been beaten, cut, and burned by her foster mother for more than seven years. She had never once been allowed outdoors, her keeper locking her inside a tiny, dark closet while she was away.In the coldest New York winters, the child slept on a piece of carpet on the floor, only a threadbare quilt to warm her.

A Caring Woman's Determination:

When a concerned social worker named Etta Wheeler learned of the child's plight, she made appeals to the police, church, and the courts, but with no success."Don't interfere between parent and child," they said. While others may have given up, Etta was determined to help little Mary Ellen.

An Unlikely Hero For An Abused Child:

In a desperate last resort, Etta went to Henry Bergh of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).Would this man who was so kind to animals help?Surely the child had the same rights as a defenseless, abused creature.Bergh heard Etta's story, and the events that followed forever changed the course of child protection in America.

Forgotten for over a century, Shelman and Lazoritz bring the story of "Little Mary Ellen" to light for the first time since it appeared in the pages of the New York Times, the Brooklyn Eagle, and the New York Tribune in 1874.

Amazon.com Review
Conventional child rearing in the wake of the Civil War could be aptly described as "spare the rod and spoil the child." Like slaves in the previous era, children were considered property, with no more rights than horses or dogs. With luck they were cared for and loved. Orphaned and raised in devastating poverty, young Mary Ellen Wilson was not so lucky. Out of the Darkness vividly details Mary Ellen's life as a captive in her Hell's Kitchen tenement. Left alone during the day to find her own playthings--a few strings and a pet spider named "Timmy"--the situation only became worse when her mother returned home to administer shockingly brutal daily beatings. More than a chronicle of one child's abuse, however, Out of the Darkness also documents her rescue--including the key role of the newly created American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. By drawing parallels between animal rights, Mary Ellen's case, and the end of slavery, Out of the Darkness illustrates how the end of the Civil War ushered in a profound shift in attitude--an acceptance that all living beings are capable of suffering and therefore deserve protection. This is a riveting read about a fascinating period. --Ginger Dzerk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping and Emotional - Superb Writing
Excellent writing by author, Eric Shelman, as he brings Mary Ellen's years of suffering and abuse to light. The story, although heartbreaking, is well worth reading. Child abuse is a national epidemic, and even though the subject is swept under the rug by most, it does exist daily for so many. I highly recommend this book, and after reading it, tell your friends about it. "Out of the Darkness," is a page-turner as Shelman takes his readers on an unforgettable, emotional journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener
This book shows that even though we don't live in a perfect world and children still slip through the cracks, we've come a long way with regard to protecting children. This is an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing read that brought back train memories of my own!
Let it be known: I am a train nut. A VIA Rail nut, to be more specific. So when I heard about this great little mystery about a murder aboard the Canadian from Winnipeg to Vancouver, I had to read it! "Murder on the Canadian" was a short read, but a very enjoyable one.

Protagonist Tom Austen wants to become a detective like his idols the Hardy Boys. Tom knows all the techniques: fingerprinting, poisons, collecting evidence and interrogating suspects, but when his vacation turns to a real murder investigation he gets more than he bargained for.

The beautiful Catherine Saks has been murdered in her room, apparently by her drunk, jealous husband. There are a number of suspects, and Tom has to move quickly and carefully to avoid being caught. The case takes a number of interesting twists and turns, including Tom nearly being abandoned in a small town, a poisoned omelette, and a fight in a railway tunnel with the killer.

Vivid descriptions, steady pacing and plenty of great conversations, as well as several action-packed sequences make this an enjoyable read for mystery and train fans of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inteligent supence

Product Description
Eric Wilson reveals a neglected yet powerful current in several major Romantic figures: the affirmation of--not escape from--turbulence. Romantic Turbulence unearths the chaotic undercurrents of European Romanticism found in Goethe’s science and Schelling’s philosophy, and demonstrates how these tendencies agitate the texts of Emerson, Fuller, Melville, Thoreau, and Whitman. These writers see the universe not as a reflection of transcendent harmony or a system of predictable laws but rather as a convergence of chaos and order, a polarized field. Detailing this undulatory cosmos, Wilson shows how these American Romantics participate in its unsettling rhythms by practicing an ecological poetics, translating the energies of their habitat into living compositions.

2-0 out of 5 stars "ADMINISTRATING SQL Server 7.0"
I found the publishers synopsis, and espcially the book's title to be very misleading!USING SQL Server 7.0 . . . it is not!The authors start out with"This book is written for IT professionals who want to learn howto administer SQL Server 7" in the introduction, and in chapter onethey point out it is for those who want to become a SQL Server DatabaseAdministrator (DBA)."Using" SQL Server 7.0 implies to me atotally different view point.I was looking for something in anintroductry guide for "users", and developers, to compliment myhigher-level SQL Server Programming manual.Instead I found it is anintroductry DBA manual. Even in itself, this is contradictory, asprospective DBA's require "in-depth" knowledge that this book islacking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cursory Reference
I found this to be a very cursory reference manual. It did not go into the depth and detail that I would have liked. This book is more geared to beginner/intermediate analysis of SQL Server 7.0. There is no help on DTS (a huge component of 7.0)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction and overview
"Using SQL Server 7" is a good book for beginners and still very useful when you got more experience. It describes the features clearly and also gives a lot of good examples. It's one of the best book about the SQLServer 7 I've seen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction of SQL server 7.0
I totally agree with one of the reviewers. This book covers everything but definitely not a how-to book. Read it if you need to have a snapshot of SQL server 7.0. If you look for a training book (for MCDBA), look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Introductory
This book is long on generalities and short on specifics and advanced topics. The most noticeable was the complete lack of information on interfaces with other database types, replication, external views, etc.Ifyou need an introduction to SQL Server 7.0 the book is excellent.Astitled, it leaves much to be desired. ... Product Description
ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) 2.0 is the latest data manipulation toolset that can be used to develop enterprise business solutions. ADO 2.0 is an integral component in enterprise business solutions, including internet/intranet applications, as it combines high-speed access to data and a flexible data structure with its simple interface. Remote Data Services (RDS) is a high-performance client-side data caching technology that transports data in intranet/internet solutions. RDSs real power is derived from its foundation: ADO. Using RDS and ADO in ASP yields powerful Web-based solutions that can be built upon a multitude of data resources.Amazon.com Review
The new ActiveX Database Object (ADO) and Remote DatabaseServices (RDS) standards from Microsoft are still relatively newterrain for Web developers. Professional ADO RDS Programming withASP provides all you need to know to be successful with these newAPIs.

The book begins with a tour of earlier Microsoft databasestandards--open database connectivity (ODBC), Remote Data Objects(RDO), and Data Access Objects (DAO)--and then moves on to today's ADOand RDS. The authors provide blow-by-blow coverage of all the majorADO objects and methods along with many useful hints for successfulprogramming. Standout material here is the coverage of ADO datashaping, which allows you to treat joined records as hierarchicalrecord sets.

The authors also cover RDS, which allows you to cacherecords locally in Internet Explorer 4/5 browsers, even while usersare disconnected from the Internet. The book looks at the variousoptions for using ADO/RDS, including strategies for balancingserver-side and client-side processing. More advanced sections explorebuilding (and deploying) custom RDS COM servers with VisualBasic. Although much of the material here is Microsoft-specific (andwill work best with Internet Explorer and SQL Server), there is also achapter on accessing Oracle databases. The book closes with 200 pagesof reference material, including ADO 2, RDS 2, and object linking andembedding database (OLE-DB) topics. --Richard Dragan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reference
If you do ADO or RDS and don't have this book, then you must have everything memorized - and more power to you!But for everyone else, this book is a MUST HAVE reference. These guys give the best examples to helpyou understand everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your a ADO RDS programmer this is a must have
This is a great book because it shows you exactly what you need to know. They get to the point effectively with every topic.I like the real world questions being answered.Like client side or server side cursors.Andtopics on how to write the more efficient rs object. The only problem Ihave with this book is the writers lack of expertise with other databases. Like MS SQL server, and Sybase SQL server.Getting information on pitfallswith other database platforms would be invaluable. They kind of tickled uswith the Oracle info, I want more now.

5-0 out of 5 stars And you think you know ADO?
I first bought this book for the RDS part since I've been working with ADO since it got out.I tought I knew ADO and even though I knew a lot about it, I've learned as much about ADO than about RDS with this book!

Goodfor any programmers working with ADO, as always, Wrox made it possible forbeginners to understand the book and for experienced programmers to learnnew stuff.

Another must by Wrox and I'm waiting to get a hand on the"Professional Ado 2.5 Rds Programming With Asp 3.0" that shouldbe coming out soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Hints
Overall the book was good, but the hints and troubleshooting section made it great.

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY GREAT

If you really are an experienceduser you don't need this book, but if you are new or intermediate get thisbook, you wont't be dissappointed. It is worth the money I spent. BUY IT.
