Product Description
More than any other generation, Americans today believe in the transformative power of positive thinking. But who says we're supposed to be happy? Where does it say that in the Bible or the Constitution? Scholar Eric G. Wilson argues that all thriving cultures need melancholia -it is the muse of great literature, painting, music, and innovation, as well as the force underlying original insights. Francisco Goya, Emily Dickinson, Marcel Proust, and Abraham Lincoln were all confirmed melancholics, so enough Prozac-ing of our brains. Let's embrace our depressive sides as the wellspring of creativity. What most people take for contentment, Wilson argues, is living death, and what the majority takes for depression, is a vital force. In Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy, Wilson suggests it would be better to relish the blues that make humans become people.Description in Spanish:Todos somos adictos a la felicidad. ... Read more

Product Description

This collection seeks to place Pudd’nhead Wilson—a neglected, textually fragmented work of Mark Twain’s—in the context of contemporary critical approaches to literary studies. The editors’ introduction argues the virtues of using Pudd’nhead Wilson as a teaching text, a case study in many of the issues presently occupying literary criticism: issues of history and the uses of history, of canon formation, of textual problematics, and finally of race, class, and gender.
In a variety of ways the essays build arguments out of, not in spite of, the anomalies, inconsistencies, and dead ends in the text itself. Such wrinkles and gaps, the authors find, are the symptoms of an inconclusive, even evasive, but culturally illuminating struggle to confront and resolve difficult questions bearing on race and sex. Such fresh, intellectually enriching perspectives on the novel arise directly from the broad-based interdisciplinary foundations provided by the participating scholars. Drawing on a wide variety of critical methodologies, the essays place the novel in ways that illuminate the world in which it was produced and that further promise to stimulate further study.

Excerpt: Bradley James Nowell (February 22, 1968 May 25, 1996) was an American musician who served as lead singer and guitarist of the Californian band Sublime. He died at 28 from a heroin overdose shortly before the release of Sublime's self-titled major label debut. Nowell performs with his band.Music was an integral part of Nowell's upbringing. Nowell's father, Jim Nowell, was fond of Jimmy Buffett and played guitar during family gatherings. On holidays, Nowell played guitar and sang with his father and uncles for hours. He developed a love for reggae music when his father took him on a trip to the Virgin Islands in the early 1980s. His combination of Reggae and punk was a hit. In 1982, 9th grader Brad Nowell joined a band of Belmont Shore/Long Beach neighborhood kids called Second Sight for about one week. The band included bassist Dave Hegstrom, guitarist Aaron Wilson, drummer Andrew Troy (who originally named the band), and soon-to-be singer Roger Topp. The band members all decided to kick Nowell out of the band after his first practice at Hegstrom's house because he had not learned to really play yet. Hegstrom showed Nowell his first barre chords and was responsible for turning Brad onto the records and music of punk rock acts Secret Hate, Falling Idols, Circle Jerks, and Bad Religion. Aside from being Long Beach's only kid punk band at the time; Second Sight's only real claim to fame was getting 3rd place in the talent show at Will Rogers Jr. High School in Long Beach, California where they shocked all the teachers and parents while performing their own renditions of Flipper, Christian Death, Sex Pistols and the Ventures. Soon after, Troy moved away from the area a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=229298 ... Read more

From the author: Aggressive responses of Black-capped (Poecile atricapillus) and Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) to heterospecific and conspecific vocalization playbacks were measured across a historic contact zone in east-central Illinois to determine the magnitude of interspecific aggression. Within the traditional Carolina Chickadee range, chickadees responded more aggressively towards Carolina Chickadee calls than Black-capped Chickadee calls. Within the traditional Black-capped Chickadee range, chickadees did not respond to either vocalization significantly more than the other. The aggressive response towards presumed heterospecific vocalizations for all chickadees was marginally more aggressive closer to the contact zone. Thus, we conclude that interspecific aggression may not act as a gap producing mechanism between chickadee ranges.

From the author: Using video cameras, we documented at least two fledgling Loggerhead Shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) visiting their parent's second active nest. We recorded 70 visits during a 10-day period, with visits averaging 7 min. We observed the fledglings sitting on the nest contents on 21 occasions. We concluded that these visits were not indicative of cooperative breeding behavior, because the fledglings were destructive to the nest structure and contents, and the adult female exhibited aggressive behavior toward the fledglings. An early reduction in post-fledging parental care by their father (who was of captive-bred origin) and slow development of the fledglings' hunting skills might have caused them to seek food resources from their mother. However, this is the first time that we have observed these behaviors in this intensively managed population. Received 27 December 2004, accepted 24 October 2005.

From the supplier: The destruction of forest habitats has reduced the survival of ovenbird nestlings and eggs. A study was conducted of ovenbird communities in a forest that has been reduced by logging in Shelby County, IL. All of the nests in the patch were found to be prone to disturbance predation by birds, small mammals and snakes since they did not have the benefit of extensive forest cover. Egg survival was also affected by their distance from the nest edge and the type of nest.
