Product Description
"When he put the gun to my head at 16, I left home..."

So begins Christopher Hyatt's "Prologue" to this remarkable book.

Rebels & Devils brings together some of the most talented, controversial and rebellious people of our time. Many, such as Timothy Leary, William S. Burroughs, Robert Anton Wilson, Osho and Aleister Crowley are world-famous. Other contributors, such as S. Jason Black, Joseph Matheny and Peter J. Carroll, though highly accomplished in their own fields, are not as well-known. Still others are lesser-known -- for now. But, every contributor, in every article, in every aspect of their lives, has had but one focus: to bring freedom to their world.

In all of human history, the essence of the independent mind has been the need to think and act according to standards from within, not without: To follow one's own path, not that of the crowd. Inevitably, it follows that anyone with an independent mind must become "one who resists or opposes an authority or established convention": a rebel.

Usually rebellion is done so quietly that no one notices. But, when others -- especially others with power -- recognize an individual's 'disobedience,' the rebel becomes the REBEL. And, if enough people come to agree with -- and follow -- the REBEL, there becomes a DEVIL.

Until, of course, still more people agree. And then, finally, there is ... GREATNESS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Neo should have feel this way after the red pill
Talking about a big change in your live; ever feel like somthing important has been written for you.
Fear not beloved reader, you would realize that you're not special and I never felt better in my life after realizing that I'm not longer an individual but a part of an ever growing process of joy an destruction that are nedded in order to change and grow one on one with the world.

Dr. Hyatt has asambled an amazing rage of important an radical thinkers of our time, with the devoted and necesary section of Aleister Crowley, the real magician in a real world.

After this I realized that magic really works, and the best of all it is that works in the real world, if not ask Phil Hine or Peter Carroll.
I realized that everithing depends on my behavior learned or spontaneous, if you don't beleive me either ask Genesis P orridge.

This book is amazing, the best part is that you realize that "every man and woman are stars".

5-0 out of 5 stars nice selection of miscellany
nice selection and collection of past, present and future rebels.contributions by burroughs, leary, crowley, parsons, rajneesh and p-orridge are some of the many authors in this book.there is everything thing from relaxation techniques, magickal techniques, poetry, short fiction, philosophy and psychological meanderings.my favorite section of the book dealt with the world of chaos.great articles by phil hine, robert f. williams jr., peter carroll to name a few, break down and describe the meaning and nature of chaos magick.this book is recommended to anyone who is interested in the alternate, magickal realities and thought.one of the better new falcon press releases.

2-0 out of 5 stars No, NO, NO!
Menstrual bleeding, personal stories of abandonment and enlightenment, blah blah blah, a bunch of rubbish from aging people who were abused and now are better. Join a women's liberation group or a "moon cycle" clan for free, but don't buy this uninformative and uncreativerubbish that has nothing to do with psychology or liberation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some contributions are great; and some are not
Rebels & Devils isn't really that much different from many other titles published by New Falcon. This one too aims to make the reader aware of his or her own inner potential, create one's own world based on personal preferences, and all in all make the individual evolution as complete as possible.

Or in other words, a help-yourself book. However, please don't think this is just another spaced-out New Age book filled with boring clichés and worn-out suggestions for the modern man. No, instead it's an anthology of quite unique essays, poems, thoughts, ideas, and even a short comic, all written by famous thinkers, magicians, philosophers, and so on, with none of them being afraid to tell it like it is. It's an ugly world out there, and an ugly world demands tough methods for personal liberation.

To the greater mass - but not people who regularly read New Falcon publications - some of the authors are more famous than others. LSD-guru Timothy Leary, for example, who actually knew a whole lot more than just munching acid all day. Leary had interesting things to say on a wide range of topics, and his contribution to Rebels & Devils clearly shows his ability to do more than simply turn out and tune in. Other contributors include William S. Burroughs, "Satanist" Aleister Crowley, and Genesis P-Orridge, and even though not all contributions are equally interesting (some of them are actually quite boring), over all the anthology makes out a great read.

That is, in case you're one of those who appreciate controversial - a term most contributors would probably want to change to "actual" - knowledge. If you already believe in yourself and know what and how to think and act in order for your personal evolution to be the best it can be, then Rebels & Devils is probably more entertaining than it's instructive. But if that is not the case, then by all means make sure to pick up a copy. It'll be a great source of inspiration. Some chapters are definitely aimed towards an American audience, for instance James Wasserman's "Pulling Liberty's Teeth", dealing as it does with U.S. gun control and the right of every American to wear arms, a topic that most Swedes cannot relate to since most of us never even heal a real gun in our hands.

But all in all, the book can be read by people all over the world, since the struggle for personal evolution and happiness is something we all can relate to; no matter where we happen to live or what nationality we happen to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nudge Toward Self-Understanding
Rebels and Devils is a collection of literary forms, from essay to comic, dealing with the psychology of liberation. Standing alone, it is overwhelmingly inspiring at times, always thought-provoking, and seldom dogmatic. The point of this book can be as simple as an interesting read, or as grand as an eye-opening experience. Rebellion is a personal voyage, so this book does not call for any type of political action - rather it calls for meditation and self-reflection. Knowledge of self is perhaps the most powerful weapon we can possess.

Along with "rebellion" our mind might pull on other words by association, like "anarchy." Anarchy has a bad reputation, and it is well deserved if the only demonstrations or conceptualizations we can deal with involve unenlightened individuals all battling for their own ends. But the ultimate freedom discussed in Rebels and Devils involves more responsibility on the part of the individual. When we have reached a certain point of self-understanding, we cannot help but understand others better as well. We can see how relativism can enter morality without all of life reverting to chaos. The starting point is responsibility - taking full responsibility for all of our actions, thoughts, desires, and everything else we like to claim we own without bearing the full burden. Why bother making decisions when it's so much easier to turn to a priest, politician, doctor, lawyer, etc...? We believe that these figures can give us answers. We can also come to believe that we can answer for ourselves.

The added bonus of such a collection is the guaranteed introduction of further reading. With so many selections coming together to form this volume, you are bound to find at least a few authors whom you will be compelled to investigate further. I was already familiar with some of the contributors, but among the new introductions were Osho, Phil Hine, and Nicholas Tharcher. I had heard of many of the others, but never read them in this light. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has not already convinced hirself that there is only one, concrete, unshakeable path through life, and even more so to those who have.

Product Description
One of the 1960s counterculture's most fascinating characters was Kerry Wendell Thornley -- a writer, philosopher, Zen dishwasher, enlightened prankster, and, possibly, an Oswald double with disturbing ties to the Kennedy assassination. A lifelong provocateur, Thornley was linked to many of the fringe elements of the time. He helped create the spoof religion called the Discordian Society and its tract, the Principia Discordia. He coined the term "paganism" to describe various nature religions. And he befriended Robert Anton Wilson, inspired the Illuminatus, and gave his anarchic support to the Bavarian Illuminati, a brilliant prank. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bizarre Book on a Forgotten Hippie Prankster
I had never heard of Kerry Wendell Thornley before.I first read the new version of the Manson Family mythos by author Adam Gorightley. This book was also available. This was quite an interesting story about some truth of the sixties counterculture.Kerry Thornley was right in the thick of some rather quixotic prankster activities.I think he was just another hippie guy,who was used by the CIA.Just like Charles Manson was.He lead a carefree and devil-may-care lifestyle that came with a heavy price.Thornley ,like so many other great budding 60's thinkers, could not fully control the explosive politics around him and the frustrations of the peace movement. This book is still worth reading. And be aware that he is forgotten by retrospective books about the sixties. If he had published more writings,he could have established himself as a trailblazer of modern 'paganism'.If he had stayed clear of the anarchists ,venting negative energy over the Vietnam war,he may have seen the folly of a 'lawless' society. The discordian principle that imbrued his moral dogma, left him spiritually bankrupt ,lasting well into the seventies.Nevertheless, this fascinating book about a fringe prankster tells the behind the scenes truth of a youthful provocateur's chaotic search for enlightenment. And the strange characters he met along the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Malaclyptic masterpiece
This book is an amazing look at the life of this prankster brought low by the weight of his own paranoid but not entirely unbelievable fantasies. I met Thornley in his final days in Atlanta and found him to be warm & congenial but was unaware that he was living in the storage room of the used bookstore in Little Five Points or I would have attempted to offer him what meager assistance I could have. Despite his own problems he still managed to reach out and help others in need in the community and he is sorely missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but unexpectedly melancholy
This is a fantastic book, but it left me kind of sad.Prior to reading this, everything I knew about Thornley was filtered through Robert Anton Wilson, and it was all positive (or at least all humorous). This book made me acutely aware that Wilson's Thornley is not unlike Plato's Socrates - an idealized character who reveals more about his biographer than his or her actual self.Unlike Wilson, Gorightly declines the invitation to treat Thornley as a discordian saint/superhero.He depicts a man who was a philosophical and comic genius, but also a raving lunatic (and -perhaps more importantly- an unhappy one).

More alarmingly, Gorightly recounts allegations that Thornley commited acts of sexual abuse against children.Gorightly's case here is pretty slim, and basically amounts to two instances of hearsay, but the allegation changes the character of this story substantially. It is disheartening to learn that the man who you thought was a bodhisattva may just have been a homeless, schizophrenic, child molester with very good PR.(Of course, the same could be said of Socrates...)

Of course, none of this should detract from the appeal of the book, which is very well-written and downright fascinating.Especially interesting are the parts about "brother-in-law," the shadowy CIA/neo-nazi/cowboy who Thornley came to believe had brainwashed him into assisting Lee Harvey Oswald.Did he exist? Was he really E. Howard Hunt? Was Thornley insane, brainwashed by the CIA, or both? With this discussion Gorightly masterfully brings the reader to the threshold of Chapel Perilous and, by the end of the book, the reader may question his or her own sanity.

As the title suggests, The "Prankster and the Conspiracy" is primarily about the nexus between Thornley and the Kennedy assassination, and does not purport to be a full biography of Thornley the man.Still, it is remarkably insightful into his personal character and is based on information from people who were close to him.

This is also maybe the first book to be written about Discordianism (rather than simply being a discordian holy text) which purports to be historically accurate.Anyone interested in Our Lady of Chaos will be interested to hear the backstory to Thornley and Hill's revelations...

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
Adam Gorightly has assembled a truly fascinating story of the life of Kerry Thornley.Yes, he knew Lee Harvey Oswald.Yes, he hated Kennedy. But, was he unknowingly part of the conspiracy?Well, you are gonna have to read the book to make up your own mind!

This book takes so many twists and turns that you are afraid to put it down - you might miss something.I guess that is the sign of a really good book.At times it reads like a cheap spy novel - but the bizarre thing is...all the events are TRUE!

This has to be one of my fave books of 2003!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kerry the Sin Eater
If there ever was a perennial scapegoat of the 60's counterculture it would have to be Kerry Thornley, one of the founding members of the patently anarchist Discordian Society. With a kind ofinsurrectionary bravado, he took it upon himself to sponge up the sordid projections of the Military Industrial Mafia Complex as well those from the plethora of intelligence revenants who trailed and taunted him for years, under various disturbing guises. He managed to keep ahead of the archetypal game by purging himself, from time to time, through various prankster like stunts, self published underground 'zines and the writing of fiction. However the Fool ended up occupying the Hanged Man's place in a Tarot deck that had been stacked against him from day one.As a result of such discouraging and divinatory odds, his self imposed role as Sin Eater freely dining at the table of the conspiracy funeral banquet is what probably turned him upside down and killed him in the end.

In Adam Gorightly's The Prankster and the Conspiracy: The Story of Kerry Thornley and How He met Oswald and Inspired the Counterculture,a most intriguing and vivid portrait of this essential and vital anarchist spirit is effectively painted.Kerry freely ranged about in the JFK/MLK/RFK assassination matrixes like a conspiratorial version of Diogenes, the ancient Greek who loved to mock the philosophers and statesmen of his day. In this case, KT was mocking the real assassins at large without anyone really knowing it, since he was drawing so much attention to himself. The author suggests that KT may very well have been an MKULTRA prodigy along with Lee Harvey Oswald himself since they were both in the marines together and stationed in Japan prior to 1963.Maybe KT's Discordian strategy was an attempt to break free of his handlers. It seems that both he and Oswald ended up being double crossed, the latter by some very real forces at work, namely in the form of a mind controlled entity named Jack Ruby, and KT by his ever snowballing delusions which genuinely got out of hand as the author so convincingly points out, thanks to his wide ranging, unbiased, thorough research and interviews with key players such as Robert Anton Wilson.Gorightly maintains a wonderful balance between compelling factoids surrounding the JFK hit, its aftermath and Thornley's proximity to it all and the elusive yet intriguing metaphysics of the Discordian Society he helped to create and promote. It certainly makes for a compelling and very hard to put down book, I can assure you of that. If you are looking to get a bead on the Thornley universe and how you may obtain a key enabling you to enter into it, The Prankster and the Conspiracy will certainly do it for you.

In spite ofThornley's Discordian extremism, mass consumption of LSD and being a target of intelligence forces, within and without, up to the time of his death,I tend to think that it was his early dabblings into Ayn Rand's so called 'Objectivism' that ultimately cracked him in the end.Aynny'sI've-got-the-Hots-for-Capitalism philosophy served to malignantly magnetize the ever mutating vortex of KT's psyche and attracted some kind of negative free market investment forces into its realm. No amount of Discordian meme subterfuge could have de-railed the Rand dogma (or catma) from rapidly self replicating within the brain of this errant pixie who seemed to be able to defy everything else and get away with it. Not even the electronic dissolution of memory could neutralize these Objectivist toxins within him, no matter how many times his handlers kept pushing the button to keep him raving.I realize that I'm merely speculating in a possibly communist/socialist manner, but Gorightly's fertile biography is triggering my synapses to bridge so rapidly that I cannot help but entertain such cabals.Your own synapses will be triggered/bridged (and entertained too) when you order your own copy of this excellent proto- biography of an anarchist archetype gone delightfully awry.

While reading the final chapters of this sad, wonderful, tragic, inspiring/electrifying book, I flashed that the `evil' Goddess Eris, who brought a well known apple to a banquet on Mount Olympus celebrating the wedding of King Peleus and the Sea Nymph Thetis, decided to jump ahead a few thousand years into the 1960's and toss another solid, golden fruit into the chaos heart of a Discordian party, a fruit upon which was engraved, 'Who is the most paranoid of all?' No telling what kind of Trojan war her question would have caused if she had chosen to roll it into the mix at the time. Who amongst the group would have fought for the title? Fortunately Gorightly`s keen portrayal of Kerry Thornley gives us a sufficient starting place wherewe can all freely witness the scapegoat himself stepping forth from the shadowed margins and taking the full honors of the title, in the limelight. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes interesting, sometimes boring
To Lie is Human was first published back in 1992 (entitled The Tree of Lies), but twelve years later it was published again, this time with its present title. Hyatt has written a great number of books, many with the intention that their readers shall "develop" themselves, that is, put shortly, become the best human he or she can possibly be. Still, Hyatt's works are NOT your ordinary help-yourself books that are flooding the market these days. Yes, it's true, Hyatt offers both advices and lessons through his books, but what separates Hyatt from most others is his unrelenting honesty, his somewhat harsh cynicism that not everybody are able to tolerate, and his ways of again and again attack ideas and values that most people probably have taken for granted all their lives.

But what is it, then, that Hyatt has to say? Well, a whole lot of things, actually. He offers all sorts of advice and help in how the individual can improve to the better, without having to fee responsible for or worry about other people. It's not a hardcore egoistic method - for example, Hyatt never says that the ones close to you don't mean anything - but what is does say is that the large mass of people out there don't really fill any purpose, that most people believing they live free lives are nothing but slaves to something they're not intelligent enough to discover, and that it obviously isn't anything wrong in finding, and using, your own potential to the fullest in a world inhabited by brainwashed citizens.

Still, I find his teachings to be somewhat repetitive. It's very true that Hyatt has tons of interesting things to say, interesting to the extent that they are worth reflecting over and will make you think about things you'd normally not think about, but to tell you the truth, I didn't really find a whole lot of things I hadn't already encountered in The Psychopath's Bible by the same author. The approach in To Lie is Human might be a little different, but when it comes down to it, both books have the same intent; namely to help the reader wake up, see the world for what it really is, and not letting anything stand in the way to personal success.

However, I do have to admit, Hyatt definitely has a sense of humour amidst all his critique, especially when it comes to religions in general and Christianity in particular, which to him is life-denying and attractive only to people too afraid to face life by themselves:

"Have you ever heard of Jehovah having a good belly laugh?
Or, for that matter, his son?
They are miserable creatures and in their misery their flock take refuge."

Now, I don't know about you, but to me that's pretty damn funny.

3-0 out of 5 stars FALCON PRESS ALERT
This is just Hyatt's TREE OF LIES reprinted under a different title. (See my review of that book). I would recommend viewing the actual book before buying it. Make sure it's what you want.

Not only did i enjoy it, but if you read it and like it i'd love to talk with you.Acrylick@gmail.com

As for the negative reviews; to each their own. But ask yourself, what could possibly be in this book that could piss someone off that much? and shouldn't you come to your own conclusion?

Trilogy, Schrödinger's Cat Trilogy, the Historical Illuminatus Chronicles, Masks of the Illuminati. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Illuminatus! Trilogy is a series of three novels written by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson first published in 1975. The trilogy is a satirical, postmodern, science fiction-influenced adventure story; a drug-, sex- and magic-laden trek through a number of conspiracy theories, both historical and imaginary, which hinge around the authors' version of the Illuminati. The narrative often switches between third and first person perspectives and jumps around in time. It is thematically dense, covering topics like counterculture, numerology and Discordianism. The trilogy comprises The Eye in the Pyramid, The Golden Apple and Leviathan. They were first published as three separate volumes starting in September 1975. In 1984 they were published as an omnibus edition, and are now more commonly reprinted in the latter form. In 1986 the trilogy won the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award, designed to honor classic libertarian fiction. The authors went on to write several works, both fiction and nonfiction, that dealt further with the themes of the trilogy, but they did not write any direct sequels. Illuminatus! has been adapted for the stage, and has influenced several modern writers, musicians and games-makers. The popularity of the word "fnord" and the 23 enigma can both be attributed to the trilogy. It remains a seminal work of conspiracy fiction, predating by years such novels as Foucault's Pendulum and The Da Vinci Code. The plot meanders between the thoughts, hallucinations and inner voices (both real and imagined) of its many characters, as well as through time (past, presen...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=38214 ... Parallel universes are certainly not a stretch, when you think about
all the bizarre stuff that Robert Anton Wilson comes up with. Here we
have another Illuminati trilogy style collection, even with some of the
same characters. However, these are alternate universe versions of
these people, hence the title of the trilogy.

If you don't like that original trilogy, you are probably not going to like this.

Juan Tootreego bobbles through life while Cagliostro the Great pleases everyone in their own individual way. We follow each of these people as they meet up with several peculiar characters such as Mary Margaret Wildeblood who is enjoying his newfound life as a woman and Hassan i Sabbah X, leader of the marijuana savvy group, the Illuminatus, and the President of Unistat. As they make their way through life in a confused state, they can't help but wonder what could have been, in the universe next door.
In short, I would honestly recommend The Universe Next Door by Robert Anton Wilson for those who want to learn something without trying, those who want to get a good laugh, and those who are looking for the answer to the question, "what could have been?"
