3-0 out of 5 stars Avon Books Fantasy Collection
In 1949, Avon Books released a Fantasy Collection (edited anonymously by Donald A. Wollheim) titled "The Girl with the Hungry Eyes". It is an anthology of six stories never published before which include fantasy, horror, and science fiction as follows:

"The Girl with the Hungry Eyes" by Fritz Leiber, Jr., a short story which is probably best categorized as fiction. It is the story of a photographer whose business picks up once he an unusual model gets him to take pictures of her.Soon she is running the show, and he becomes more and more convinced that there is something sinister going on.This is probably the best story of the collection, which is why it is the title story.

"Venus and the Seven Sexes" by William Tenn (a.k.a. Philip Klass) is a novelette told from the point of view of the Plooch, a race with seven sexes, and their interaction with a human who they treat almost in a god-like way, but who in fact is a Hollywood director. It is a humorous story, with obvious science fiction and fantasy elements.

"Mrs. Manifold" by Stephen Grendon (a.k.a. August Derleth) is a short horror story told by Mr. Robinson, a man hired to be the clerk at Mrs. Manifold's Sailor's Rest inn.It is not a great horror story by any means, as it takes a little too long to setup, and the ending leaves something to be desired, but there are worse.

"Daydream" by P. Schuyler Miller is an unusual story of revenge and justice. In this story, James Payson is bullied by his cousin Charles Galt while growing up, when he creates a man (and cat) in his mind to help him survive.Years later, when James has established a successful business, Charles again tries to bully James, and runs into the power of James' mind.

"Maturity Night" by Frank Belknap Long is a short story, in the science fiction genre. It is a coming of age story set in a post apocalypse future where man has lost the secrets of technology and science, and reveres men of the past as "Mighty Men".Jal Strall is sent to spend a night in an old museum, where he is instructed to not touch anything and where he is supposed to get visions of the Mighty Men of the past.Instead he decides to try to run one of the machines, a time machine which takes him back in time.

"Come into My Parlor" by Manly Wade Wellman is a horror short story. In this story, the narrator is interested in plants which eat insects, and ignores the advice of his friend Henry about entering the Gardinel Swamp where large specimens are said to be.It is a rather predictable story with a predictable result.

This is a decent anthology, but certainly not as good as many others. It is also difficult to find, but if you do run across a copy, you could do much worse.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret of an Exciting Novel
This book is a children's novel also thought-provoking and exciting enough for young adults. A hard science-fiction story
written in the 1950's, The Secret of Saturn's Rings is the adventures of a teenager and his scientist father who discover
that a huge corporation may shatter the moon into bits with its deep-core drilling, and the duo rocket to Saturn to discover the secret of why that planet possesses rings. They encounter
traitors and double-crossers who endanger their lives. This Indiana-Jones-like adventure is guaranteed to thrill the young person who reads it, and Saturn's fascinating secret is very
satisfying and intriguing. Truly a fun adventure. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice selection of sci-fi works
Donald Wollheim edited a series of books on the year's best science fiction works. This volume focuses on 1977. My favorite story is Isaac Asimov's "The Bicentennial Man." Other of my favorite authors in this work: Brian Aldiss, Lester Del Rey, Joanna Russ, James Tiptree, Jr., and Damon Knight.

I really enjoyed this series back in the day!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader
Perfect in one respect, not an average story to be seen in this book. Also in another, in that a 4.00 average is as good as you can reasonably hope to get for an anthology. So, absolute top marks here.

There are three standouts, with one headliner. If a story every deserved the word madcap, it is Steven Gould's 'Peaches for Mad Molly'.

There's also an introduction by Isaac Asimov, that gives a bio of the editor, who was apparently in hospital at the time.

Excerpt: Isaac Asimov (Russian: pronounced ; born Isaak Yudovich Ozimov, Russian: ; c. January 2, 1920 April 6, 1992), was an American author and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science books. Asimov was one of the most prolific writers of all time, having written or edited about 500 books and over 9,000 letters and postcards. His works have been published in nine of the ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal System (the sole exception being the 100s: philosophy and psychology). Isaac Asimov is widely considered a master of the science-fiction genre and, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, he was considered one of the "Big Three" science-fiction writers during his lifetime. Asimov's most famous work is the Foundation Series; his other major series are the Galactic Empire series and the Robot series, both of which he later tied into the same fictional universe as the Foundation Series to create a unified "future history" for his stories much like those pioneered by Robert A. Heinlein and previously produced by Cordwainer Smith and Poul Anderson. He penned numerous short stories, among them "Nightfall", which in 1964 was voted by the Science Fiction Writers of America the best short science fiction story of all time, an accolade that many still find persuasive. Asimov wrote the Lucky Starr series of juvenile science-fiction novels using the pen name Paul French. The prolific Asimov also...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14573 ... Read more
