Fun, fast read
This book was easy and fast to read. There are not many descriptive details about any of the famous cases that Wright was involved in; just general outlines of the cases.Nonetheless, it was fun to read about events that were in the news for much of my life.Wright sounds like a man of integrity and honor; he's very impressive and good.He should run for president...we could use men like him in politics.And, I don't think I'm prejudiced just because his wife is a former college roommate of mine. ... This study examines the genesis of Chicago's two identified literary renaissance periods (1890-1920 and 1930-1950) through the writings of Dreiser, Hughes, Wright, and Farrell. The relationship of these four writers demonstrates a continuity of thought between the two renaissance periods. By noting the affinities of these writers, patterns such as the rise of the city novel, the development of urban realism, and the shift to modernism are identified as significant connections between the two periods. Although Dreiser, Wright, and Farrell are more commonly thought of as Chicago writers, this study argues that Langston Hughes is a transitional, pivotal figure between the two periods. an okay anthology about a great topic
This is an anthology about black gay men.Unfortunately, the tales inside are not as fierce or defiant as the title would suggest.In many of the pieces, issues of race and sexuality take the back seat to "l'art pour l'art", typical literature.The pieces near the back are better than the introductory ones.The piece by James Earl Hardy (who almost never writes short stories) is great.Jaime Manrique has a piece here and I've never seen him write about black issues (he writes almost exclusively of latino ones).I am glad I have a copy of this book, but I liked "Brother to Brother" and other books on the topic much better. ... Hesse - the Bearer of Human Longing
The collection - to my philosophical taste - starts out slow: poems of beauty. But after a few pages: bam! - poems of meaning, angst, metaphysical longing.I am not sure if this thematic trajectory is an artifact of how the collection was collated or if this trajectory parallels development of Hesse's psyche.I've seen a similar kind of thematic arc in other poets (in Esenin, for example).

In sum, these poems are a "backstage pass" into Hesse. As for the edition: I haven't had a chance to see the 2008 one - but this one, 1970, has both German and English - and German, whether you read it or not, provides - font-wise - an a propos goth-y, existentially angst-y, visually cameral background to the English translation.
