5-0 out of 5 stars Basics behind the making of the film
As to say Spike Lee is one-of-a kind director and a good follower. I luv him from the top since he been out. I would actually like to hear more from him 'cuz he's still my top director and mentor. Now back to the movie, I know everybody have love for this flick that Spike Lee created it talks about the life and times of civil rights leader Malcolm X (played by my main man Denzel Washington) which begins on reading the screenplay, the talks about it, the stars who played on the film and to those that believe that believe it out, etc. This is one of my all-time favorite books to read 'cuz it tells it all right here from this movie I like. Anyway it's still my #1 favorite movie of all-time. I look forward for Spike Lee putting out a memoir of his life and where he started his film-playing career into a higher level which drops in Sept or Oct of this yr. Specially look forward of hearing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative and educational book on an important film.
"By Any Means Necessary" is an excellent book on the making of the film "Malcolm X" by director Spike Lee. Not only do we get a chance to see the film from the director's eye, but we also get to read all of the hassles he had to go through in order to come out with a film in Hollywood. The whole tone of the book, like all of Lee's books on his firms, is that of a diary. So what we're reading is random notes, scribbles, and just little lines that he will remember down the line. It almost seemed like a match made in hell: Spike Lee, considered to be a "controversial" film director, does a film on the line of Malcolm X, considered to be a controversial human rights figure. Throughout the book, Lee has to remind himself that despite the nay-sayers, the film will be done, even at times when he doubts his own creative genius. There are also thoughts from some of the actors (including Denzel Washington, who also played Malcolm X in his early years), but the best words come from Lee ... Book Description

Malcolm X lived in difficult times - when some thought that black people were inferior to white people. But Malcolm believed that black people should stand up for their rights and he preached this belief everywhere he went. His message became popular because it was one of hope and pride. But it also became dangerous, because some people didn't agree with him. In 1965, one of these people shot and killed him. Even though his life was cut short by hatred, Malcolm X's ideas still affect people of all races. Here is his amazing story.

Book Description
Few figures haunt the collective American psyche like MalcolmX. Hoodlum, convict, convert, prophet, nationalist, and martyr, Malcolm'slife spans the Civil Rights era like an index of America's racial anxiety.Dozens of books and hundreds of articles have analyzed his life, his work, and the various ways that his image has been appropriated by Americanculture. Not much has been done, however, to analyze his speeches. Thiswould be a glaring omission in the body of scholarship about almost anypublic figure, but is especially troubling with regard to Malcolm X. Hislegacy does not consist of marches preserved on newsreels, legislationpassed by Congress, or holidays observed by the state; his legacy consistsalmost exclusively of his words.

Malcolm X, like any orator, did not fashion his discourse in a vacuum butworked within and modified modes fashioned by his predecessors. MalcolmX: Inventing Radical Judgment begins by exploring the interpretivestrategies presented in key texts from the history of African- Americanprotest, establishing a spectrum against which Malcolm's oratory can beassessed. The texts of speeches that Malcolm delivered while he was aminister for the Nation of Islam and the texts of speeches and statementshe made after he left the Nation are analyzed carefully to discern thestrategies of interpretation and judgment that he enacted and fostered inhis audiences. Finally, this radical judgment, presented in and throughMalcolm's public discourse, is re-contextualized by using three disparatetheoretical approaches. The purpose of this triangulation is not to containthe rhetoric of Malcolm X within the limitations of these vocabularies, butrather to show that the changing potential of Malcolm's rhetoric lies, inpart, in its iconoclastic refusal to be constrained by definitiveboundaries. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Strives to reveal a better understanding of one man's speechmaking power
Written by an Assistant Professor of Communication at Indiana University, Bloomington, Malcolm X: Inventing Radical Judgment is a scholarly, intense, and philosophical analysis of Malcom X's oratory. Scrutinizing both the speeches that Malcolm X made while as a minister for the Nation of Islam and those made after he left the Nation, Malcolm X: Inventing Radical Judgment especially focuses upon the strategies of interpretation and judgment that Malcom X fostered in his audiences. Recontextualizing the radical judgment found in Malcolm X's rhetoric according to three disparate theoretical approaches, Malcolm X: Inventing Radical Judgment strives to reveal a better understanding of one man's speechmaking power that was so great its iconoclasm transcends the limits of individual contemporary definitions.

This is the first book that I've ever read through it's entirety. It simply had me spellbound from beginning to end. This is one of the most important books on race relations and political sabatage as there can be on America. It holds up a mirror to our society , so we can see what has been and what is. To know yourself and love your yourself is the most powerful possession that we can have as an American people and as a Black man. Malcom X ,lets us into his world and see things as he sees them. And it's as accurate a description on life in America as a Black man , as I've ever known. Truly inspirational , heartbreaking , and motivational. 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, brief introduction to Malcolm
This booklet features two full speeches, an interview and sections of other material from the last year of Malcolm's life. This was the period following his split from the Nation of Islamthe religious and nationalist organization he had been a central leader of for many years. Many consider this period of his life as the one of his most mature political thought.

These speeches constitute a useful introduction to his thought and for the price can't be beat.

Understanding the evolution of Malcolm is critical to an understanding of the 20th century.

5-0 out of 5 stars The U.S. govt. is NOT "ours"; they are NOT "our troops"
This little pamphlet is a package of political dynamite for TODAY'S world. In speeches (more than two) and interviews, Malcolm explains why he is for the right of Black people (I have no doubt that he would say "working people" today) to defend themselves by any means necessary against police violence or other racist violence; explains why we (the "us" being working people, Black, white, Latino, Asian, male and female) must never call the U.S. imperialist government "our" government, imperialism's troops "our" troops, or its actions "our" actions. Period. He identifies U.S. and European imperialism as such (no, it did not begin with Bush II ); he identifies both Democrat and Republican parties as the twin parties of racism; he tells why anyone (any Black person then; we would say any working person today ) who votes for or campaigns for the Democrats is either a traitor or being played for a chump ( still true today !) hails the Chinese and Cuban revolutions as examples for what we need to do HERE; and he explains how he came to be against capitalism and prosocialist. Also he tells why The Militant newspaper is one of the best in the world (it's on the web!). This is Malcolm speaking for himself in the last year of his life: Alex Haley refused to let Malcolm's autobiography be changed-by Malcolm himself! -to reflect his all his changing views and development after he left the Nation of Islam, so you have to go to the speeches, at least five books of them published by Pathfinder Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power of the Oppressed v. Power of the Oppressor
As a soldier stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, in 1969, I was privileged to hear on audio tape the two central speeches printed in this booklet: "Black Revolution" and "Prospects for Freedom in 1965."
Those speeches were key to coalescing tens of Black and Puerto Rican GIs who organized a significant group on the base involving any soldier who would oppose racism and the US war against Vietnam. Today, with the US-led war and occupation of Iraq along with continued racial oppression and exploitation in the US, this material is as relevant as it was in the '60s. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Bad
This volume contains but three short speeches by Malcolm X, all of which are available elsewhere. These essays were then dubiously re-edited and reorganized by Archie Epps in some sort of misguided attempt to refine them.

The first 60% of the book, moreover, is taken up by Epps' own scattered, incoherent essays, which are astonishingly bad. Epps had the idea of comparing Malcolm X (a person) to "Shakespeare's plays" (not a person), which is an incoherent idea in itself. His method of scattering random Shakespeare quotes throughout a thin account of Malcolm X's life makes this bad idea, weak in conception, even worse in execution.

If you're interested in reading Malcolm X's speeches, which you should be, get ANY other anthology or collection in print. Anything would be better than this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatly Surprised
I brought this book because of the title and the cost, plus it's Malcolm, but when I began to read it, it was more than what I expected to be. Best 80 cents I ever spent

5-0 out of 5 stars Some excerpts
I think the best way to describe this wonderful book is a few excerpts (from the 2002 expanded edition).

"The young generation of whites, Blacks, browns, whatever else there is -- you're living at ... a time of revolution, a time when there's got to be a change.... And I for one will join in with anyone, I don't care what color you are, as long as you want to change this miserable condition that exists on this earth."

"It is the teenagers ... all over the world, who are actually involving themselves in the struggle to eliminate oppression and exploitation.... The young people are the ones who most quickly identify with the struggle and the necessity to eliminate the evil conditions that exist."

"In America the Black community in which we live is not owned by us. The landlord is white. The merchant is white. . . . And these are the people who suck the economic blood of our community."

"We are not for violence in any shape or form, but believe that the people who have violence committed against them should be able to defend themselves.... I have never said that the Negroes should initiate acts of aggression against whites, but where the government fails to protect the Negro he is entitled to do it himself."

[In Africa] "I'm from America but I'm not an American. I didn't go there of my own free choice.... [I am] one of the victims of Americanism, ... one of the victims of a very hypocritical system that is going all over this earth today representing itself as being qualified to tell other people how to run their country when they can't get the dirty things that are going on in their own country straightened out."

[In Africa] "When we find a Black man who's always receiving the praise of the Americans, we become suspicious of him.... Because it has been our experience that the Americans don't praise any Black man who is really working for the benefit of the Black man."

"It is impossible for capitalism to survive, primarily because the system of capitalism needs some blood to suck. Capitalism used to be like an eagle, but now it's more like a vulture. It used to be strong enough to go and suck anybody's blood whether they were strong or not. But now it has become more cowardly, like the vulture, and it can only suck the blood of the helpless."

I recommend the ads in the back of the book. Pathfinder Press is defined by a political goal, not commercial success. It aims to provide a platform for revolutionary leaders speaking in their own words. If you like one book, you will probably like others.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Expanded edition is now out from Pathfinder
A new expanded edition of this book has been available since November 2002!
This new edition includes 43 more pages than the previous edition, with the complete text of Malcolm's Speech at Oxford and a more complete text of his speech at the London School of Economics. The expanded introduction together with Jack Barnes' "He spoke the truth to our generation of revolutionists," a memorial speech for Malcolm given in March 5, 1965, provides an excellent short introduction to Malcolm's life and ideas.

There is a six-page index, eight pages of notes, as well as an expanded photo display of 17 pages including Malcolm X with students and young people from Tanzania to Alabama, including a picture of Fidel Castro and Malcolm X smiling together in Harlem in 1960 when they were both still young!

This edition of Malcolm X Speaks to Young People is being produced together with a first-ever Spanish-language edition, entitled Malcolm X habla a la juventud, which is being released simultaneously by Pathfinder Press and by Casa Editora Abril, the publishing house of the Union of Young Communists in Cuba.

5-0 out of 5 stars Malcolm X: the internationalist
Malcolm X Talks to Young People is an immensely relevant and instructive book for the young and the young at heart. His words, spoken to university students in Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States in 1964-65, ring as true today as they did then.

"I just try to face the fact as it actually is and come to this meeting as one of the victims of America, one of the victims of Americanism, one of the victims of democracy, one of the victims of a very hypocritical system that is going all over this earth today representing itself as being qualified to tell other people how to run their country when they can't get the dirty things that are going on in their own country straightened out,"he told students at the University of Ghana, May 13, 1964.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebel Youth :Read This NOW,Then Autoiography
Originally issued as the first Gulf War began,in these pages Malcolm explains how in the Congo the US govt bombed women, men, children, and babies and called THEM terrorists,as he points out,the same as in Vietnam. He shows how it was the U.S. and U.S.-flunky ( "anti-Castro Cubans pilots" ) who were the terrorists in the Congo in the early to mid 1960s. At a time when the word "hero" is twisted so obscenely, it is a breath of fresh clean air to read Malcom's descriptions of the herois Simba fighters of the Congo who tried, and failed to liberate their country from U.S. neocolonial domination after kicking out the Belgian colonizers, and to hear him describe the equally heroic fighters who defeated the Empire in China and Cuba and Vietnam in the same terms. He exposes the use of UN cover for the Yanqui Empire's wars and drive for profits. He explains that these crimes are the doings of a system, the imperialist system ,as he calls it himself. He points out they use the cops to do the same at home :brutalize working people. Malcolm further points out that both the Republican AND the Democratic parties are the twin parties of racism and imperial exploitation. Oh yes, both parties ! He explains how he came to the conclusion that " capitalism is like a vulture...it used to be able to suck anybody's blood...but now it can only suck the blood of the helpless. It's only a matter of time , in my opinion, before it will collapse completely " and how he became prosocialist. He points to the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cuban revolutions as examples for Blacks - today he would add and we can add, all working people --to emulate in this country, in our time. And, he makes his stand to fight alongside anyone, any color, who fights to better condtiions for humans on this earth. As the 2nd Gulf War begins, again under UN cover and "inspections" just as the liberals pleaded, as more working people's blood, Iraq and American, for the sake of theoil profits of a tiny few, it is good to be reminded that as, Malcolm says in thesepages, " The young generation of whites, Blacks, browns-you're living at a time of revolution." He was right then andhe is still right. If you seek serious fundamental social change, you owe it to yourself to buy and STUDYthis book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Everything is a conspiracy...
It doesn't take very long to understand this person's view of the world: everything is a conspiracy against the black man. Just read a few of his speeches in this book, just his view on the most simplistic things, such as anthropolgical terms of race classifications, that they are designed to promote whitey, and you'll realize this book is not very objective. This book dares to call Malcolm X the most pivotal figure in Afro-American history. Carver who? Booker T. Washington who?MLK who?! No, no, no. Didn't you know that Malcolm X--the pro-violence, Islamic extremist--is your hero? Pathetic. Dangerous propaganda in the wrong hands. I am throwing my copy away; I won't resell it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Murderous, Duplicitous Cover-up
This book lays bare the role of the U.S. government, New York City authorities, and capitalist news media in the killing of Malcolm X.

Only the gullible did not suspect FBI and CIA involvement in the 1965 assassination of Malcolm. In the wake of the Watergate scandal, the FBI was forced to reveal documents in 1974 regarding its sordid goal: to "prevent the rise of a `messiah.'"_____(expunged name) might have been such a `messiah'. He is the martyr of the movement today," read a FBI memo dated August 25, 1967. This book's analysis is crucial for those seeking the truth today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Assassination of Malcolm X
This is what I thought of the book.I thought it was a good book, it was interesting to read.Basically, the book was about Malcolm's plans and his murder. He went to jail when he was young then became a Muslim. He eventually broke away from the Muslims and started his own movement. The police didn't like Malcolm or his organization of Negroes. He thought blacks and whites should be seperated.Unlike Martin Luther King, he believed in the violent approach. He was killed in a ballroom. The author wants to know the reason the police didn't look further into the investigation. That's whatthe book is written about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Against the political and physical murder of Malcolm X
This book combines on the spot reporting of the murder of Malcolm X that exposes the flaws in the NYPD's claims about the murder with a look back at the murder taken after COINTELPRO, the FBI's campaign against the civil rights, antiwar, and other progressive movements which included following and disrupting the life of Malcolm X.This is combined with political defense of Malcolm's ideas and his course of struggle in the time after he broke with the Muslims. For those who think the NYPD and the FBI are heroes, and who think that the US government should not be fearedin regard to protecting the civil liberties of people in struggle, this is the book to read!

Book Description
Malcolm X's cultural rebirth--his improbable second coming--brims with irony. The nineties are marked by intense and often angry debates about racial authenticity and "selling out," and the participants in these debates--from politicians to filmmakers to rap artists--often draw on Malcolm's scorching rebukes to such moves. Meanwhile, Malcolm's "X" is marketed in countless business endeavors and is stylishly branded on baseball hats and T-shirts sported by every age, race, and gender. But this rampant commercialization is only a small part of Malcolm's remarkable renaissance. One of the century's most complex black leaders, he is currently blazing a new path across contemporary popular culture, and has even seared the edges of an academy that once froze him out. Thirty years after his assassination, what is it about his life and words that speaks so powerfully to so many? In Making Malcolm, Michael Eric Dyson probes the myths and meanings of Malcolm X for our time. From Spike Lee's film biography to Eugene Wolfenstein's psychobiographical study, from hip-hop culture to gender and racial politics, Dyson cuts a critical swathe through both the idolization and the vicious caricatures that have undermined appreciation of Malcolm's greatest accomplishments. The book's first section offers a boldly original and penetrating analysis of the major trends in interpreting Malcolm's legacy since his death, and the fiercely competing interests and ideologies that have shaped these trends. From mainstream books to writings published by the independent black press, Dyson identifies and examines the different "Malcolms" who haveemerged in popular and academic investigations of his life and career. With impassioned and compelling force, Dyson argues that Malcolm was too formidable a historic figure--the movements he led too variable and contradictory, the passion and intelligence he summoned too extraordinary and disconcerting--to be viewed through any narrow cultural prism. The second half of the book offers a fascinating exploration of Malcolm's relationship to a resurgent black nationalism, his influence on contemporary black filmmakers and musicians, and his use in progressive black politics. From sexism and gangsta rap to the painful predicament of black males, from the politics of black nationalism to the possibilities of race in the Age of Clinton, Dyson's trenchant and often inspiring analysis reveals how Malcolm's legacy continues to spur debate and action today. A rare and important book, Making Malcolm casts new light not only on the life and career of a seminal black leader, but on the aspirations and passions of the growing numbers who have seized on his life for insight and inspiration. ...
