This revised edition of Yevtushenko’s early poetry collects together the Russian poet’s best work from 1953, when he was twenty, to 1967. 5-0 out of 5 stars Some of Yevtushenko's best works...
Yevtushenko's early poems were, and still are, some of his best--powerful, vivid, and brilliant, even in English translation. This is a bilingual Russian/English edition.

His poem, "Babii Yar," about the slaughter of Jews at that fateful place during World War II, was used as the centerpiece for Shostakovich's Thirteenth Symphony. Written in 1962 to combat anti-Semitism, it is just as powerful and meaningful today as when it was first read.

"Nothing in me shall ever forget!"(from "Babii Yar")

5-0 out of 5 stars Russia's Modern Muse
One can argue that Yegevny Yevtushenko is Russia's greatest modern poet.At the peak of his career, he packed theaters in Russia.People flocked to see him, to hear Russia's muse read his scripture. This volume of poetry includes Yevtushenko's masterwork.Upon writing his poem Babii Yar,Yevtushenko became a worldwide success. This piece gave fame to a site inRussia where thousands of slaughtered Jews rest. Yevtushenko's poemshold subtle indictments of Soviet Society.Babii Yar incriminates theRussians who do not want to remember all the Russian Jews who perished.InA Career, the poet expresses his dislike for those who deny the truth inorder to win approval from their leaders. The book featuresYevtushenko's poems in both Russian and english. If one cannot readYevtushenko's native language, the english version, translated by GeorgeReavy, is sufficient.Although not percisely translated, the poems holdthat same meaning and stark beauty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Voice in the Soviet Wilderness
Yevtushenko is known as one of the greatest Soviet poets. In this slim collection of his works translated into English, we are given his two greatest "political" poems. The first is the long memoir, "Zima Station" where he connects his daily life and trip back home to Siberia with the political adventures of the day.The horrors of the Stalinist purges and the political reshuffling are placed in contrast with an almost idyllic summer in his Siberian hometown.

The other, his great masterpiece "Babiy Yar," seeks to challenge the Russian anti-Semitism.In 1941 Germans and Ukrainians murdered over 30,000 Ukrainian Jews. The poem juxtaposes the quiet grassy ravine of Babi Yar, as Yevtushenko saw it in probably 1960 or 61, with the horrors committed.Meanwhile he is also challenging the Soviet theory of Communism without prejudice. He attacks this hypocrisy with: "When the last anti-Semite on the earth/is buried forever/let the International ring out."

Also included are some of his "less important" poems. Two personal favorites of mine are included. One is "On Bicycle," where he describes a day-ride from Moscow into the countryside. The other is "Encounter" where he sees a man who looks like Hemmingway in Copenhagen - only to find out later it was Hemmingway.

Yevtushenko was one of the blue-jean rebels of the 1960s.They challenged the Soviet state, not in a political but cultural way.Unfortunately, since the thaw in Soviet/US relations in the 1970s he has been marginalized by many circles in the West. This Penguin edition has been out of print since that time. However, in August 2008, Penguin is finally going to run another print. If 20th Century poetry is your thing, Yevtuschenko's realism and witty idealism in something not to miss!

The work of Russia’s best-known post-Stalin poet

YEVGENY YEVTUSHENKO blazed a trail for a generation of Soviet poets, leading Russia to new heights of artistic achievement in the twentieth century. With a confident poetic voice that moves effortlessly between social and personal themes, he describes his idyllic childhood in Serbia, his impressions of home after a long absence in Moscow, his joy upon discovering the unexpected in a lover, his chance meeting with Hemingway in Copenhagen, and his impressions of war, rendered with immediacy and vigor in these pages. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars How could they leave out "Lies"
My only comment... if you like this author, look up his poem "Lies".It's one of my favorites!
Otherwise, nice collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step aside Byron, Dryden, and Shelley
Step aside Byron, Dryden, and Shelley Words are not enough to describe the great pope, I have read the works of many poets but none come close to Pope. Practically self educated he puts words in such a way and with such wit, that you often feel and say "That is so true, so beautifully described"........ take a minute and contemplate on the below. A great Master
1. Some in search of wisdom, lose their common sense and then turn critics in their own defense.
2. Men deal with their life as children with their play, who first misuse then cast their toys away.
3. Launch not beyond your depth but be discreet , and mark the point were sense and dulness meet.
4. A man should never be ashamed to own he has been in the wrong which is but saying, in other words that he is wiser today than he was yesterday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Consult the Genius of the Place
When I first started reading this collection, I thought that eighteenth century poetry was dry and inferior to later forms of literature, especially when compared with the innovations of the twentieth century. After delving deeply into some of Pope's major poems, I realized how wrong I was. Pope's wit was astounding, and he was a true poetic genius in his ability to capture concepts and arguments in beautifully rendered images and metaphors. His abilities are best summarized in these famous lines from his "Essay on Criticism": "True wit is nature to advantage dressed, / What oft was thought, but ne'er so well expressed."

I was often surprised by Pope's ability to articulate ideas that had occurred to me, but I was never able to articulate myself. It is a testament to Pope's insight into the human condition that his lines still ring true three hundred years since their first appearance. The subtle, complex ideas found in his poetry will expand your thoughts in ways you never though possible, especially if you have never experienced poetry from this period before.

For me, some of the highlights from this collection are "The Rape of the Lock", a beautifully detailed mock-epic steeped in the material culture of the eighteenth century; "Windsor Forest", a topographical poem that encodes and critiques the history of England in a description of its landscape; "Epistle to Burlington", a stinging criticism of "false taste"; and "Eloisa to Abelard", an emotionally wrenching letter of tragic medieval romance. For those interested in the writing and critiquing of literature (admittedly, not everyone), the brilliant "Essay on Criticism" will be the standout piece here, with its vast complexities and beautiful imagery. Furthermore, the detailed notes in the back of this edition should fill you in on any historical or literary references that will assist in your interpretation of the poems.

This edition is an amazing introduction to the poetry of one of the greatest writers in the English language, and a good first step into a fascinating period of literature. Don't be afraid! Read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars YevtushenkoSelected Poems
This was concurrently, my introduction to Russian poetry and the poetry of Yevgeny Yevtushenko back in my early 20's. The simple prose style of the translations was appealing to a 20 year old. But since then, many of the poems have become touchstones for my own receeding youth and my Slavic family heritage. The lengthy opening poem, "Zima Junction", tells of Yevteshenko's own youthful days growing up in a small town in Siberia. The final poem, "People", affirms the spirituality of life without a single reference to religion. "Encounter" describes a chance encounter of Yevtushenko with Hemingway in Copenhagen. ("It was the very image of Hemingway. Later I heard that it wasHemingway.") "Babiy Yar" is perhaps, the most famous poem in the collection. It describes the slaughter of Russian Jews by the Nazis and the collusion of the antisemite Soviet regime. The last few lines of this poem are some of the most moving I have ever read.
"No Jewish blood runs among my blood,
but I am as bitterly and hardily hated by every anti-semite as if I were a Jew. By thisI am a Russian." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning photographic document
Working each in his own country, but with a unity of vision, Russian writer Yevgeny Yevtushenko and American photographer Boyd Norton produced this amazing collection. Hundreds of photos of Eastern Siberia (mostly the Bering Sea region, which was closed to foreign visitors in most of Soviet times) and Alaska bring out wildlife, people, human culture and landscapes, and what photos! The colours and the sense of space are glorious - it's obvious that Yevtushenko is no mean photographer - and even if it's full of stunning scenery, you never feel that the camera is going for the "postcard beautiful". It just taps the power of the surroundings.

Some of the pictures have an archaic feeling and reminds one that they would have looked like this if taken a million years ago, but in most, man is at the centre - people working, looking at the landscape, or their houses scattered around the place. Yevtushenko also brings a powerful series of portraits of people of his Siberian hometown; they have a quiet dignity and sense of of experience. There's also a bunch of his poems about the people of Siberia, of his childhood, and of the historical tragedies this country has witnessed ("The accidentless captain", "A personal letter from the Generalissimo" - i.e. Stalin). The poems are printed in Russian original and in a vivid English translation.
The idea of the book was no doubt to serve as a gesture of peace, and to show the common humanity of Russians, native Chukchee and Americans. It serves this purpose, and the images are, well, unforgettable. It should be reprinted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Captured, the wilds of Siberia and Alaska

5-0 out of 5 stars Ashes, and Stone, and Zombies
This book is a perfect reflection of what is left when you exterminate the spiritual element of a society. This is what results when you forcibly amputate the "Holy" from Holy Russia. This is what is left- ashes, and stone, and zombies. It is a place of the living dead. Even the sadism of the police seems to lack any real animating passion. It is just a job, and if they are not brutalizing and humiliating someone (anyone really) then they aren't doing their job. Nothing personal. Even when the faceless, brutalized masses finally fight back there is no real heroism involved. It has as little meaning as a stampede at the stockyard....

I've heard this book compared to Jack London's _The Iron Heel_ and Orwell's _1984_. I'd have to agree, this is the purely visual expression of the same anti-totalitarian theme. It works. If you really take it in, then it can't fail to give you nightmares. You can tell that the artist was raised under the specter of the Gulag. That's the difference, if an American tried a similar work it would have come across as just another horror show or comic book- a Russian does it and it comes across as a plausible reality. Maybe that explains why this work hasn't found a wider readership in the U.S.- no one wants to reflect on what it represents.

Don't get the idea that this is only about the "Gulagocaust", for it isn't. It isn't even a condemnation of true socialism, for it is pointed out that the "socialist camp" had nothing really to do with socialism, but everything to do with camps. As is pointed out in both the introduction and afterword this book is about any system where people are treated as lifeless statistics. It could just as well represent the coming global world of corporate totalitarianism.

Reflect on this book two or three times some evening before turning in. If it doesn't give you nightmares then you haven't really been paying attention.

How do you know if your society is slipping into this nightmare? As the closing afterward says- when you find that empathy is impossible and prejudice is unavoidable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fellow Artist's Review of Silent City
Silent City is the best work of fantasy related artwork I have seen in a long time. Erez's works compare with those of Ron Spencer or Greg Horn, and are equally brutal in realism. Eric Yakin manages to combine light scaled cubism with modern realism in a bleak outlook of what may have been today. His youthful existance in Communist Russia truely shows through in this magnificent first work. Anyone and everyone should own a copy.

2-0 out of 5 stars a good attempt but not a good artwork
The artist, 18 when producing this debut wordless novel, attempts to depict the situations of the dehumanized, angry citizen undersadistic regime in the industrial wasteland. It is a good try but the artwork is a bit dull and flat in most of the pieces. One star for the attempt and another for the idea. ...
