Extractions: WFTS put a DTV station on the air at the end of October l999. It is a full-power station with the call letters WFTS-DT. It is assigned by the FCC to broadcast on television channel 29. We are using virtual channel, so our DTV station is tuned as 28.1 on an HDTV set-top box with the main NTSC station as 28.0. We transmit from the same tower as our Ch. 28 location in Riverview, Fl., with an antenna height of 1649 FT. AMSL (1575 FT. above ground) and an ERP of 500KW. The station is on the air full-time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are currently airing our HDTV programs in DD 5.1 when the soundtrack is available. All other HD programming is broadcast in DD 2.0. An indoor or outdoor antenna is needed to receive the signal. WFTS-DT is also carried on Time Warner Cable on channel 628. We do not subscribe to this notion of quality. The danger of connecting ABC with quality in this sense is that the concept is too easily read as unproblemmatic, and used as an excuse for the exercise of specific tastes in programming, or for the creation of hierarchies of genre (for example, hierarchies which prioritise news over children's programming, period drama over science fiction, drama over comedy etc).
