The article on pages 10-11 shows that God the Creator has given parents the great responsibility of overseeing the education and character development of their children. Christian character, which can never be adequately taught in a public school setting, is essential to sustain a free nation. Modern Americans have ceased, for the most part, to fulfill this obligation. They have turned away from the God who made America great and have produced a generation that is lazy, incapable of shouldering responsibility, dishonest, and forever blame-shifting. Many Chinese students observe these modern Americans and the enormous prosperity they have inherited and conclude that freedom and prosperity must have very little to do with personal character. But that is not true. We must look deeper to find the truth. The personal history of most early Americans reveals quite a distinct contrast in character to their modern counterparts. A close examination of historic accounts leads to one conclusion: America rose to greatness because of character - and she shall fall, if current trends prevail, for lack of it. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, is an excellent example of this character instilled in early Americans. Born in 1767, John Quincy came from a New England farm family that played a significant role in shaping the course of the United States.

On the other hand, the very success of Adams as Monroe's secretary of state had resolved many of the issues in foreign affairs that might have engaged Adams as president. The Great Lakes were pacified, fishing rights off of Canada had been restored, the U.S.-Canadian boundary had been established, Florida was safely procured, and the U.S-Spanish border west of the Mississippi was resolved in ways that gave America strong claim to the Pacific Coast in the Northwest. Extractions: John Quincy Adams was a precocious child. He attended private schools in America and abroad when he traveled with his diplomat-father. He graduated from Harvard, became a lawyer, and wrote about politics. He served as a diplomat in Europe for three US Presidents. Through his childhood associations he became a linguist and well informed on many subjects. He was a capable secretary of state under US President Monroe. In fact, Adams was responsible for many of Monroes foreign accomplishments. He held several elected offices, but his independent actions separated him from his party. He barely won the presidency. The House of Representatives elected him because he did not have a plurality. He lost his bid for a second term, but he became a representative in Congress where he argued strongly for what he believed, no matter how controversial. Abigail lived briefly in Paris and London as John Adams served as U.S. ambassador to France and England, and she became a friend to First Lady Martha Washington when John Adams became the country's first vice-president under George Washington . Abigail Adams died of typhoid fever in 1818; seven years later, in 1825, her son John Quincy became president.
