What makes it good is that many people are reporting on the the Taliban, bin Laden, and the destruction there, but not about the people and what they go through under the Taliban rule. Did you know that the Taliban has outlawed the Internet for being obscene and anti-Islamic? Many children die in the freezing temperatures as their families make the trek from home to the squalid and overcrowded refugee camps in Pakistan or those, equally squalid and overcrowded, set up by the UN inside Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the Taliban (whose main supporter is Pakistan) controls 90% of the country; publicly hangs and shoots suspected prostitutes and thieves; imprisons men for shaving, watching television, flying kites, and playing with birds; rapes and oppress women to an unimaginable degree. Single women and widows, who, like all women, are not allowed to work (or even leave the house unless they have made themselves almost invisible to eyes and ears), are forced to turn to prostitution in order to support themselves.

"I had been in the military in Stuttgart, Germany, responsible for writing the base newspaper, during which time I also developed a love of photography," says Gary. "A bit later we were offered an option. If we took an early discharge, we could stay anywhere in Europe for up to a year, then the military would arrange to get us back home." Extractions: Return to World Literature Index Page Teaching Afghanistan Society and Culture Carol Hannamann Academic Setting I am currently a Title VI Reading teacher at Mary Ann Binford Elementary School. The school has adopted the Balanced Literacy Program for reading instruction throughout the school. The standardized test required is the Terra Nova. This test is generally administered in March for 3rd through 5th grade students for our school. Throughout the school year our goal as reading teachers is to give the students the opportunity to work in small groups to develop their reading and comprehension skills. The students I work with range from grades first through fifth. Currently there are 957 students enrolled. Mary Ann Binford is a year round multi-track school; therefore the school is able to accommodate such a high enrollment. The school is located in a low socio-economic area where most of the students are of Mexican descent. 88% are Mexican nationals, 9% are Anglo, and Native Americans make up about 3% of the student population. There is a high student turnover rate due to the Mexican nationals living a nomadic lifestyle. The school offers many different programs because so many of the students are monolingual.
