Extractions: Flags The flag of Afghanistan is composed of three equal vertical bars of black, red, and green, with the yellow coat of arms of Afghanistan in the center; this flag is known as the "King's flag." Each bar is twice as long as it is wide. The coat of arms depicts part of a mosque, sheaves of wheat, two banners, the date 1371 (A.D. 1992), which is the date of the Mujahideen victory, and an Arabic inscription that reads, "There is no God but Allah and Muhammed is his messenger." This black, red, and green flag was flown in Afghanistan from 1930 until 1973. It was again flown over the presidential palace in Kabul on February 5, 2002, in a ceremony led by interim Afghan leader Hamid Karzai. This flag replaced the flag of the overthrown Taliban

Shortly thereafter, the rebel groups, or mujahadin, began fighting each other, culminating in a civil war that is still underway. The Taliban, a group of Islamic fundamentalists, controls 90% of Afghanistan, including the capital of Kabul. The allow Osama bin Laden, a former mujahadin soldier, to set up camp in Afghanistan as their "guest." Pakistan Afghanistan's neighbor to the east, Pakistan was the United States' primary ally in Central Asia during the Cold War. Pakistan has been engaging in sporadic warfare with India for more than 40 years over the province of Kashmir, which each nation claims. Pakistan last made news in 1998, when it detonated a series of nuclear devices to match India's atomic capabilities. The subsequent international sanctions resulting from the tests have left Pakistan economically weakened. Now the leadership must balance a desire to assist the United States with the resulting backlash from Pakistani Islamic militants, who support the Taliban.

Extractions: Recent events have provoked a sudden and intense interest in the people and geography of Afghanistan. Mapmakers at the National Geographic Society have responded by creating an up-to-date, detailed picture of the changing situation in the country. Whereas it usually takes cartographers about seven months to produce a map at the Society, the new map was completed in just over a month. High demand for maps of Afghanistan and the surrounding region from schools, news organizations and the government motivated the intense effort. Extractions: Afghans plans world's largest copper mine November 8, 1998 KABUL (AFP) - An international consortium will begin assessing copper reserves in Afghanistan shortly which could lead to the development of the world's largest copper mine, Deputy Mines Minister Abdul Salam Zaeef said Sunday. Nine entrepreneurs had signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the mine at Logar, 35 kilometres (21 miles) south of Kabul, which held reserves of 11 billion tonnes, he added. However, he said the initial tests had been conducted by Russia during its occupation of Afghanistan and needed to be confirmed. The consortium's engineers were expected to begin assessments within two months as part of a broader one billion dollar investment plan, and report back with final estimates and costs by May next year. "Historically copper reserves were seen in the vicinity of about 10 million tonnes but when the Russians arrived they upgraded the resource to 11 billion tonnes," he said "The estimates are the biggest in the world." The consortium consisted of businessmen from America, South Africa, Britain, France, Germany and Pakistan. The Escondida copper mine in Chile is currently the biggest producer in the world. It is 57.5 percent owned by Australia's BHP Co. Ltd.. Zaeef said Afghanistan's ruling Taliban was optimistic about the Logar site because the copper was close to the surface and could be easily accessed through open cut mining.
