Admission criteria include (1) a degree from an accredited institution, comparable to the bachelor's degree offered at Berkeley; (2) sufficient undergraduate training to undertake graduate study in the chosen field; and (3) a satisfactory scholastic average. In addition, applicants are required to take the general test of the Graduate Record Examination and to have their scores on the exam reported by the Educational Testing Service. Extractions: Students wishing to earn a certificate in African American Studies can do so by taking at least the 2000 level introductory course, one upper-class seminar at the 4000 level or higher, and six other courses as a coherent package of study. Besides the two courses of 6 hours required in the Institute core, the certificate directs a student to focus for a total of 12 hours in either: History and Culture (Folklore, Religion, African American Civilization, and Diaspora Studies, including the Caribbean, South America, and sub-Saharan Africa); Behavioral and Social Inquiry (Psychology, Sociology, Speech, and Political Science), or Literature, Language, and the Arts (Drama, Cinema, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Music, Swahili, Romance Languages, and English). At least two courses of three semester hours each (divisional total of six hours) must be selected from two of the three divisions in African American Studies. The requirement makes for a grand total of at least twelve divisional hours outside of a student's selected division of specialty in African American Studies. Extractions: The Department of Afro-American Studies offers a graduate program in the field of African American Studies. The aim of this program is to combine an interdisciplinary training in African American cultural and social studies with a focus in a major disciplinary field, leading to the PhD in African American Studies. The program admits four or five students a year into a five- to six-year program. While there are no specific prerequisites, typically students either have undergraduate majors in African American Studies, or have majors in fields such as anthropology, comparative literature, English, history, history of art, music, philosophy, sociology, and religious studies, and have done some undergraduate work in the field of African American studies. The fundamental rationale for the program is that there now exists a substantial body of scholarly writing on African American social, cultural, economic and political life and history, conducted by scholars with a primary training in a traditional discipline, who have drawn on the work of colleagues in other fields to enrich their work. This interdisciplinary corpus of scholarship is at the core of African American Studies, and most serious work on African American literature, history, culture and social, economic or political life, proceeds with an awareness of this interdisciplinary background. There is, as a result, a fairly substantial tradition of writings and a lexicon of ideas that together define a core of knowledge in the field. Familiarity with this core at the graduate level is an important part of the training of those who work on these topics.
