    Extractions: Jean Kemble The rich surge in African American arts and letters that took place in 1920s was not limited to Harlem, nor even to New York City. However, the intensity of the movement in that city, and the sheer number of black writers, musicians, and scholars who lived and worked in Harlem has ensured that it is forever linked with the era. Almost as suddenly as it had blossomed, Harlem declined into an urban ghetto neglected by outsiders and offering little to its residents. For over thirty years its Renaissance seems to have been all but forgotten. Then, in 1967, the New York Public Library published The Negro in New York, a series of manuscripts prepared by the Federal Writers Project and housed in the Schomburg Collection of the Harlem branch of the Library. The interest in this publication was enormous, and the wealth of information contained in the collection has ensured that it is still being mined by students and scholars today.

    Extractions: This course is designed both to introduce students to key issues, themes, and methods in African American Studies as well as to pique interest in an effort to encourage further study of the discipline; thus, the course is comprised of important texts, but also of those which have proven to have "high appeal" in the past. I have presumed very little knowledge on the students' parts of either African American or ethnic studies more generally. Each week is focussed around a literary text through which we explore a central issue in interdisciplinary fashion. For example, during the unit on slavery we study a variety of slave narratives, and use these texts as entry points into a discussion of the historical period and cultural moment which informed their creation.I have selected both traditional and non-traditional texts, but have attempted to provide the students with a solid foundation in those which they might be most commonly expected to know following an introductory course in African American studies.     Extractions: Students wishing to earn a certificate in African American Studies can do so by taking at least the 2000 level introductory course, one upper-class seminar at the 4000 level or higher, and six other courses as a coherent package of study. Besides the two courses of 6 hours required in the Institute core, the certificate directs a student to focus for a total of 12 hours in either: History and Culture (Folklore, Religion, African American Civilization, and Diaspora Studies, including the Caribbean, South America, and sub-Saharan Africa); Behavioral and Social Inquiry (Psychology, Sociology, Speech, and Political Science), or Literature, Language, and the Arts (Drama, Cinema, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Music, Swahili, Romance Languages, and English). At least two courses of three semester hours each (divisional total of six hours) must be selected from two of the three divisions in African American Studies. The requirement makes for a grand total of at least twelve divisional hours outside of a student's selected division of specialty in African American Studies.
