Extractions: The KIFWEBE mask (below, left) takes both male and female forms. Worn only by Kifwebe men of Eastern Congo, these masks are worn on the head to police or to intimidate enemies. The male mask is differentiated by a high comb; the grooved pattern of white rubbed into the surface represents positive concepts of purity, light, peace or the moon. Red is used as an accent for blood, fire, courage or fortitude. The FANG mask (below, center) made by the Fang people of Cameroon is distinquished by a highly stylized, long narrow face and asymmetrical paint. The mask is not worn, but paraded through the village to keep it safe, by warding off misdeeds and protecting the villagers against miscreants. The Fang masks today are modeled after the old Fang masks of Gabon. The GURO mask (below, right) of the Baule, Guro and Yaure peoples of the Ivory Coast are characterized by narrow, well-proportioned faces, small chins and high foreheads, lowered eyelids, narrow nose and delicate nostrils. Extractions: Kariamu Welsh created the Umfundalai African Dance technique in 1970 out of a quest for a functional and aesthetic method that would mirror some of her personal experiences, as well as a collective ethos and history that would reflect her African and African American heritage. Umfundalai means "essence" or "essential" in Kiswahili. The technique is a Pan-African dance technique in that it draws from dance styles and movements from different African and African disasporan cultures. The technique espouses a holistic view of the body and the arts including theater, music, sound, song, masquerade, and vocalization. The Umfundalai technique emerges from a world view in which the universe is perceived as a harmonious entity in which life force exists in all things including the known and the unseen. The Umfundalai technique stands on the shoulders of the Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus techniques, although it has taken a different path.

Extractions: Contributing writer The sound of African beats filled the Clark Hall south lounge Tuesday as the Ma'at Black Student Union hosted its Umeta workshop. Umeta is Swahili for "a dance of young people." Students had the opportunity to learn African and Afro-Caribbean dance moves taught by Menjiwee Winfield, coordinator of campus dance group Omnimov. During the workshop, the moves became increasingly challenging. By the end of the workshop, the students were able to combine several different moves to perform an energetic African dance. Students could see similar dance techniques performed by Omnimov. The group, which began in 1966, is part of the African-American Cultural Program. "It is made of 17 dancers that perform jazz, African, hip-hop, ballet and a little bit of everything," Winfield said. An Omnimov fall concert is scheduled for Dec. 1 in the Illini Union. The Association of Black Cultural Centers will also host several dance groups on campus Dec. 1 through Dec. 3. Additionally, students are invited to become involved in the Ma'at Black Student Union, said Rebecca Bunn, Ma'at vice president. Ma'at meets every Tuesday at 7:30 in the Clark Hall south lounge.
