Perhaps the greatest challenge a breeder is faced with is how to properly set up new birds to ensure the best chance for breeding success. The quest to find the magic formula has proven to be frustrating and very time consuming for many. The nervous nature of African Grey parrots, (wild caught in particular) makes this task even more challenging for the species. Greys are just like people in that they are each individuals. You cannot expect them all to conform to one set of standards and be happy. It is necessary to keep an open mind and use common sense regarding what will contribute to breeding success in your environment. I recently spoke with an individual who was having no luck breeding his pair of Greys. He decided to replace the female of the pair simply because she did not have any interest in her mate over one year. The complete absence of pair bonding behavior prompted his decision. In my experience, I doubt that playing musical parrots will solve his problem. In fact, there may not have been a problem in the first place other than a lack of patience. To quote a very successful breeder and club member, Mr. John Doole, "Bird keeping is an art, not a science." I am very fortunate to have two proven pairs of African Greys. Other than matching each other clutch for clutch, they are as different as night and day. Initially, I had what I believed to be one true pair. They proved me wrong however, by laying an infertile clutch of seven eggs. I enjoyed these parrots so much that rather than replace one of them with a male, I purchased each of them a mate. I placed all four Greys together in one large cage to encourage natural mate selection. Within a few short weeks, two birds paired off. The other birds were stuck with each other by default. They have now been paired up individually for approximately three years.

It is certain that the Grey Parrot was known and traded by 1522 A.D. when a naturalist named Ulysses Aldrovandi mentioned the Grey Parrot in his zoological work. Today, the African Grey Parrot is one of the most popular pet birds. Species There is only one species of African Grey Parrot, Psittacus erithacus erithacus , commonly known as the "Congo" Grey Parrot and one sub-species, Psittacus erithacus timneh , known as the "Timneh" Grey Parrot. There is some debate about a second species known as Psittacus erithacus princeps , often referred to as the "Ghana" Grey Parrot. It is considered by some to be a separate race. It is slightly smaller in length and darker in color. There are other variations in the coloration of African Grey Parrots. There are some birds speckled with red feathers and those with pinkish tones in their grey feathers. There are some nicknamed "Cameroons" which are larger and lighter grey in color.

Extractions: There are two subspecies commonly found in the pet trade - the Congo African grey (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) and the Timneh African grey (Psittacus erithacus timneh) . The Congo African grey is slightly larger than the Timneh, and has bright red tail feathers. The Timneh's tail feathers are dark, maroon colored tail feathers, and overall usually has has slightly darker coloration than the Congo, especially over the back (although not always the case). While the Congo's beak is grey, the Timneh's upper mandible is bone colored with a dark edge, while the lower mandible is grey. There is some debate over whether there are significant differences in temperament between Congos and Timnehs. Some say the Timnehs are slightly more laid back and less prone to feather picking and other neurotic behavior. Others say there is no difference. Either way, there is a lot of individual variation between birds of both subspecies and even if there is a slight overall difference in temperament, this generalization won't necessarily hold true for any given bird.

Extractions: Information About African Grey Parrots Diet: Our birds are weaned on apples, oranges, grapes, nectarines, carrots, frozen (thawed) mixed vegetables and pasta. We also make a protein mix of peas, feed corn, barley, brown rice, and several types of beans. This mixture is soaked and then cooked until tender but not mushy, and they receive a heaping tablespoon of it daily along with the fruit and vegetables. We also feed a pellet diet, a variety of Roudy Bush, Lafaber, and Haggen. They seem to enjoy Roudy Bush the best. We treat them to a sprinkling of mixed seed over their food twice a week using a parrot mix without sunflower seeds. An excess of sunflower seeds is not healthy and can make the bird "hyper".
