Extractions: Soils were considered as a natural body by Russian and US scientists in the late 1800s. This allowed scientists to study and classify soils with the objective of trying to understand soil formation from an environmental perspective. They recognized that soils were formed by weathering of surface deposits or "parent materials" by processes that were physical; chemical; and biological. The concept of soil forming factors allows scientists to understand and classify soils more clearly. Parent Materials Soils are formed by weathering of "parent materials". These materials have many origins such as bedrock surfaces, aolian (wind blown), lacustrine (from glacial lake beds), alluvium (river) and organic (peat) deposits. Many of our soils have been developing since the last ice age. The soil profile is in a dynamic equilibrium. As wind and water erode particles from the surface of the profile, weathering produces more soil from the parent material. If loss of soil by erosion exceeds the production of new soil by weathering then catastophic consequences can occur as seen in the "dirty thirties". The most important parent materials in Saskatchewan come from glaciers which retreated from the prairies about 10,000 years ago. The glaciers, often several thousand feet high, had the power to move rocks and debris from the north carrying them hundreds of miles and depositing them all over the province as the ice melted. This material is often called "Glacial Drift or Till" and is several to hundreds of feet deep. Soils that form on till are usually clayey and quite stony and give rise to a rolling type landscape. The Glaciers often dammed river valleys creating huge glacial lakes (Saskatoon is situated on an old lake bed) which accumulated fine silt and clay material. Soils that form on lacustrine deposits are often quite silty and are stone-free, giving rise to a flatter landscape.

This is a "global" study mostly based on national data. The literature confirms that indirect effects of sea level rise, as well as the potential impact of extreme events, may be more significant than direct effects in the future. In the absence of an accepted methodology for building long-term scenarios, two approaches are explored here: an analysis of a large database of extreme events that have occurred over the last 100 years, and an analysis of population statistics in relation to a national Vulnerability Index based on physiographic features and population density. Recent historical data are examined to identify trends that could be extrapolated into the 21st century. This is achieved by separating those factors that are more specifically associated with the oceans - tropical cyclones, tsunamis - from other, more land-bound or population-bound disasters, such as droughts and epidemics. Despite the limitations of the data sets, some trends do emerge, but they do not necessarily point in the direction of greater property and population losses in the future owing to sea-caused disasters. Rather, they indicate that difficulties - independent of the global changes - will be relatively larger on land than along the coasts, and that the major component of life and property losses are associated with levels of economic development.
