Extractions: ITHACA, N.Y. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded Cornell University's Albert R. Mann Library $865,845 for the preservation of books, family farm memoirs, land transactions and other published materials that depict the history of American agricultural and rural life. Mann Library, working on behalf of the U.S. Agriculture Information Service, will be preserving nearly 2,700 titles in 8,500 volumes published in Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina and North Dakota between 1820 and 1945. This is the third phase of an ongoing project, the National Preservation Program for Agricultural Literature, that began in 1996. Agriculture fueled the social and economic engines that built the United States, and the farm family was the basic social unit molding American life for two centuries. "Such literature, much of which was printed on acidic paper, is now rapidly deteriorating," says Janet A. McCue, director of the Mann Library. "These works document the experience of individual farm families, the development of farm communities, the pressures affecting rural culture and its evolution in response to national and world events." The project is directed by the staff of Mann Library, and it uses the methods developed by Wallace C. Olsen, a senior research associate at the library. Its first phase allowed libraries in eight states to evaluate the available documents to choose those most worthy of preservation, and it allowed four schools, including Cornell, to begin microfilming their selections. The second phase allowed four more states to begin microfilming and another seven to begin evaluation. The latest grant brings total NEH funding for the project to $2.61 million.

BBC - History - All Change From Jane Austen in the 1810s, via Charles Dickens' pictures of mid century Londonlife, to HG Wells It was a rural country, dominated by agriculture. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/society_culture/industrialisation/speed_01.shtml
Extractions: Print this article Rural life It's all there in popular fiction. From Jane Austen in the 1810s, via Charles Dickens' pictures of mid century London life, to HG Wells' Time Machine in 1895, the world of literature moved from comedies of country manners to blistering portraits of urban poverty and, finally, time travel. Not bad for 80-odd years. '...the fastest thing on earth was a galloping horse...' Although the Industrial Revolution had already begun, Britain in 1800 had changed little in centuries. It was a rural country, dominated by agriculture. For most, the world was restricted to their village - where their family had probably lived for generations - and the nearest market town, not surprising when the fastest thing on earth was a galloping horse, covering 100 miles a day at best. If you lived in Somerset, London was almost foreign, much as it had been in 1600. You wouldn't even have been using the same time - with the sun rising around ten minutes later than in London, Bristol clocks ran ten minutes behind. 'Horizons were limited and life was slow.'

Secretary Veneman Launches Expansion of Rural America's Telecommunication and Broadband Technology Welcome Rural America has been the foundation that this nation was built on and has been one of the fundamental elements for the strongest and healthiest economy in the world. The agricultural sector of the economy propelled the nation and enabled it to reach out in different directions, fostering the Industrial Age to create great achievements that surpassed many others in the industrialized world. Today's Information Age - the successor of the Industrial Age it can be argued - is now enabling us to repay rural America for its hard work, drive, and devotion to making this the most prosperous nation in the world.
